I still remember my first playthrough of Homeworld. I was utterly struck by the gravity of the tone set by the introduction sequence. From then on I played it like a sim, I mined out every map and built up my fleet so that it would continue on to the next map.... Until the damn asteroid belt mission, where after hundreds of attempts I finally beat it, losing much of my fleet, only to have not enough of a fleet or resources to beat the next mission.
I never played it again after that.

Homeworld was one of those sublime games where you just fall entirely into the mood and atmosphere of the piece. A perfect collision of story, music, and technical execution. I often think of that emotion and sense of wondrous & terrifying loneliness Homeworld managed to evoke while I think about the Star League exodus from the Inner Sphere.
The palpable loss must have felt much the same to General Kerensky and his loyal SLDF forces as they set out on the Exodus Road that lead finally to the Pentagon Cluster, and generations later, after their evolution into the clans, back to the Inner Sphere.

You had me there, the comment preview in the notification cut off after two sentences, and just for a second I thought you had forgotten to mention Battletech :)

You missed one of the biggest glaring problems with the Remaster, Homeworld 1 didn't have unit caps for campaign or skirmish. It is a big problem for a lot of us older players who played the original Homeowlorld back in the day.

wow you have a much better memory than me, I had forgot that was even a thing. It looks like someone made a workshop mod that let you modify or remove the cap when the remaster was released, but unfortunately it's not functional anymore.

@@kaluventhebritish It was something I remember fondly because I would spend many nights playing the game during my High School years. One of my favorite things was to use salvage corvets and steal as many enemy ships as possible. I would actually have squads of support frigates and anti-fighter ships escort them to enemy ships during fire fights with the full intention of adding them to my fleet.

I Love these games SO much, it was my first real RTS addiction and with a committed modding community too and that soundtrack! Epic. Good work again! 😁

I never made it through the nebula, tried two times starting from scrap preserving more resources and capturing more ships.. but I just wasn't good enough.

Is that the mission with the annoying and ridiculously tough enemy ship that steals all of your best units and runs away with them?

@@kaluventhebritish It's the one with the three inhibitor fields. I think it's a lot of small vessels and some motherships that like to ram your best units.

If only Cataclysm wasn't lost to time... The source code for that game was lost so no one was able to do a remaster as they have done with Homeworld and its sequel.
Cataclysm was such a great game, great story, great gameplay.

That's a real tragedy, I wondered why that had been left out of any remaster. What a sad story.

@@kaluventhebritish That was right about the time Vivendi's mismanagement destroyed Sierra, a lot of shitty things happened.

Back when Relic made Games of the Year instead of crap sequels to old successes. Too bad the OGs, the brains that made Homeworld, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War and the like, are all long gone, and what they have now is the copycat hacks of CoH3 and DoW3, at least Homeworld 3 I gather is out from under the Relic label, so it might not suffer that curse.

The 3D controls weren't good. They were excellent. I, for one, immedeately felt comfortable operating in 3D.
