NOTE : Despite Mentioning properly the formula for Hoop Stress and Longitudinal Stress of a thin cylinder in video, some people still have confusion regarding that.

For Thin cylinders,
Hoop Stress is pd/2t
Longitudinal Stress is pd/4t.
Hoop Stresses are always double than Longitudinal Stresses.

Horizontal stress is twice the circumferential stress.So the shell must not be weakened more than necessary along longitudinal axis we keep longitudinal axis as minor and circumferential axis as major

Agreed, But consider the minor axis of manhole door to be parallel to Longitudinal axis if boiler since Longitudinal seam being twice that acting upon the circumferential seam.
Hence the boiler shell must not be made weakened along Longitudinal axis..so we have put minimum or minor axis along Longitudinal axis..
Remember the values of both hoop stress and Longitudinal stress. Do not get confused by only hoop stress or P=F/A.

I will post a video on that, but that system is very complicated to explain by animation,,for the time being you can refer other animated videos on Steering gear on youtube,,where u can easily understand their working :-)
What about circular shape?
Can you take out a circular door from another circular hole? Its very hectic since they will stuck, Even though some of manhole doors are Circular but mostly are Elliptical in Shape.
