Her comparing this autism film to the “good movies growing up” like rain man, Gilbert grape etc is a HUGE problem. That’s the issue. People hear autism & think “rain man” which it’s NOT AT ALL.

Kathy Griffin recently confirmed on Twitter that Sia herself has been diagnosed on the autism scale. I think she herself never made it public because she doesn't want to be seen as someone who pushes herself into the victim role. (after all the hate she got)
@@SiaArchive yes It took me a while to come out to even my close friends. And Shame on this community for not allowing a fellow autistic express herself. They all deserve to be canceled right back. Even tho I’m autistic this makes me grateful I never joined any groups. I already have a hard time with the little amount of social interactions I get…don’t need a whole mob nitpicking me to death. I knew she had autism I could see it. So grateful because her music has helped me through some very dark times.

I’m autistic. Thank you Sia for your agreement with Variety comparing your autistic central character to an inanimate object like a wig. (Did you mean your full face wig?) This shows the depth of respect you have for the autistic community. I understand you made this film as a love letter - if that’s your response to the many criticisms then I say “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” The central character’s performance (seen in the trailer) reminds me of Trump mocking people with learning difficulties. I’m sure you’re all proud of the film and perhaps you’re thinking of making Music 2. As for me, I need to get back to my day job of sitting on my owner’s bald head. Much love to you all! x
I keep thinking that through all this "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" every single time she says, over and over, that she had good intentions. That whole wig thing was so icky. I try not to let it, but when I think about it, it just sort of eats away at me.

Can someone clear this up...
So Sia said she was working with an autistic girl for the role who found the work overwhelming and had to pass. Then she called Maddie when the first girl didn’t work out. However Sia also said she wrote this with Maddie in mind from the get go ? 🧐 so was the role alway made for Maddie or was she just a last minute addition ?
When the movie was announced in 2015 Maddie was the only name attached (it was written in 2015 based on a one page story written in 2007), at the same time Sia said that she wrote it for Maddie. Not sure how that translates to the things that Sia was saying on twitter.

My take on the tweets in September is that she was saying things that she thought would help the situation (she only said that there was someone else after being asked why Maddie). It shows her lack of knowledge that each time she dug the hole deeper. If she had really done 3 years of real research then she wouldn't have said that she worked with Autism Speaks.
Sia thought the appropriate research for Maddie to learn how to play her role was to watch 'What's eating Gilbert Grape' and to watch meltdown videos. Sia also taught Maddie all the tics (Sia's word) that she would need from observing Stevie in AA.
Sia wanted to make a movie for Maddie to "protect" her from the industry keeping her from working with others.Maybe the subject wasn't autism and then she changed it.

There is things that could’ve been set differently, but there’s nothing we can do. I think the ACTUAL music is good; the movie could’ve been changed.
I honestly didn't see anything wrong with the film.
Well, the film is extremely offensive to a lot of autistic people and you can easily see even though Sia claims she has done a lot of research on autism that the autistic character doesn’t follow what real autistic people go through daily. This movie missed a big opportunity to cast someone who was autistic which would’ve made the movie itself 1000 times better even through a lot of senes are still messed up. I’m not autistic and I don’t speak for autistic people but I’ve seen a lot of autistic people offended and hurt by this movie and rightfully so.

Woww!! So I'm hearing on this interview about the emotions and tears that were very present in the making of this movie. Now I get why in just the first 5 minutes I was crying a very light but with deep resonance and wasn't exactly sure why it struck me that way. When Music walk outside and stopped and stared at the birds from the rooftop and for a moment the camera froze on her face and we could see "her" not the autism per say and she was so delicately Beautiful and the shot was beautiful and her eyes were more than beautiful! I said to myself "this beautiful talent"(Music) ... yeah, I already know I'm going to Love this movie!!" And then little by little the other members of the cast Lesley and then Kate were introduced and I was like, "Ok, lemme settle and get comfortable ~ those is gonna be Good!!
When the musicals hit ~ I was floored! The dance steps were soooooo beyond unique. Almost like watching sign language in body motion music. And Hector/George was icing on the cake!!

There movie was Amazing and different
I cried little cries but often. In something want even sure why, as the scene wasn't particularly sad but i just kept feeling emotionally touched. I think Music played her part so well and in such a sweet little way.

Okay but when leonardo DiCaprio played an autistic kid it was all fine but when Maddie does it it’s not?
Leonardo dicaprio played a developmentally delayed character. And he actually spent time with developmentally delayed people to prepare for the role. The role rainman was about an autistic savant and playing by a non-autistic person but the actor spent A FULL YEAR talking to and spending time with autistic people to get to know them and to be able to accurately and respectfully represent them as a dynamic character. He also spent a lot of time with the autistic man that the character is based off. Both those movies were okay and well received because autistic people were actually consulted and spent a lot of time with, the characters were in depth individuals and did an accurate and respectful job portraying an autistic/developmentally delayed person and wasn’t just a stereotype of an autustic person. The way that music ‘s role was researched was by watching TH-cam videos of autistic people having meltdowns that were posted online BY THEIR PARENTS. Which is so messed up in itself. The character is written as a complete stereotype of an autistic person, its not accurate or genuine, and in the story music isn’t an in depth indivudual, music pretty much exists in the movie to move along the relationship between Kazu and ebo. It’s a terribly offensive movie and if it had not been the autistic community would have been open to it just like that have been open and accepting to other movies that had autistic characters which weren’t played by autustic people. Maddie Ziegler’s character was an offensive stereotype of an autistic person and they also showed that restraining her was loving which is a really horrible and traumatic thing to Autistic people. That’s the bottom line of why the film is bad and offensive- it’s not just because they tackled the subject of autism, it’s because they tackled it poorly and made a mockery of people with autism.
I’m autistic & gay and all these autistic ppl are assholles to say they’re offended by it. Sia’s a wonderful person and now thanks to all these cancel culture obsessed ppl we don’t get to watch it in theaters. Hi, hope you are well. just watching Music now on prime video. It's getting rather a bad reception in reviews. Just wanted to ask why you made it so colourful and has lots of lights as I was told that autistic people didn't like lots of bright flashing lights don't know if that's true. Also people who didn't like it said it was harmful to restrain autistic people like that. Just wanted to know what the reasoning was?
Its a bit deeper than just "not liking" bright flashing lights. Autistic people experience this thing called "overstimulation", (which was displayed in the film if I'm correct [haven't watched the whole thing myself, but I think I've seen clips of an overstimulation and meltdown scene or two]) anywho, autistic people tend to have sensory sensitivities, meaning that things like bright flashing lights, loud or unexpected noises, scratchy clothing, sticky substances, and other things that neurotypical people might see as "mildly uncomfortable" are excruciatingly unpleasant and can even be physically painful to experience (hence why many autistic people needing noise-canceling headphones as an accomodation, and/or soft tagless clothing, etc). Having to endure these overwhelming sensory inputs can lead to a meltdown, which is also excruciatingly unpleasant, involuntary, physically and emotionally painful, and can cause the person to go non-verbal and sometimes lead to to harmful (and involuntary) behavior like hitting, biting, or scratching themselves.
That brings us to the harmful (sometimeslethal) restraint method shown in the film; I'm linking an insightful article on it cuz I have a feeling I've already typed too much to keep anyone engaged. 🤣 To summarize and add to the article, the prone restraint method is outdated because it's physically harmful and emotionally scaring to go though, and has caused the deaths of many disabled (and non-disabled) people. Restraining an autistic person experiencing a meltdown will only make it worse for them. Instead, you should do what you can to eliminate the sensory inputs that could be causing the meltdown (take them away from any loud, bright, even smelly things, don't bombard them with questions or demands, let them rock bacn and forth or do whatever they're doing as long as its not harmful, give them a stress toy, something cold to hold, and/or something to hide under like a soft blanket, so they can try to escape from the overwhelming input and the after-affects of it.

I have seen the film and find that it would be difficult for someone with autism to even watch it and can see why they had to hire someone who wasn't autistic to play the music character as it has all those over sensory images and flashes you talked about. It's really strange it's like the filmmaker didn't do any research and looked for the visually stimulating movie to make that portrays people with autism as if they are a chore and something that if you help them you will become a better grown up person. The autistic character was a side character in this. I don't mean to be rude to the filmmakers I can see they were trying to make something that shows the internal working of an autistic persons mind with music and dance and the design but it was very naively created and becomes a parody like someone said it feels like the bit in Tropic Thunder with Simple Jack. Also the bit with the over restraint if it can kill why did they have it in the film? That's very dangerous. I mean what kind of message is that? I know the filmmakers are not bad people but they really screwed the Pooch with this movie.

Well then don't watch it. It's her creation, her imagination. She shouldn't be restricted just because a couple of people can't watch it. Let her tell a story the way she wants it. Autistic people seem to be extremely hateful, it's scary.

I really don't know what to think about all of this... my son is 13 and autistic. He was 4 when he fully regressed to non verbal and had MANY issues but is doing Great now. He's growing into a wonderful, caring, respectful young man but he's very child like and emotions are very hard for him 2 identify. We've gone through a very rough 9 to 10 years of self harm, meltdowns, eloping, obsessive compulsion & on and on. Today we're all great as a family but this film only had a very few things that I as a parent could relate to, bc there is SO MUCH MORE We as parents AND our children have to deal with. I kind of feel like yea, thank you for the autism awareness but, I also feel like this wasn't representative for sooo many autistic families and what they actually go through! I could NEVER leave my son alone (leave my home) 4 even seconds! I could never let my son walk out the door & "go for a walk" without being with him...idk... I'm happy 4 the awareness but don't think it "hit" the mark by being representative to #actuallyautistic I guess I just have to leave it to "its Hollywood & it's just another make believe "real" life or "based on real life" movie. That's all I can say about it. And, I have No time for Sia & her self righteous self.... NO time at all. Js

This saddens me. A truly missed opportunity for a film that could have been so amazing and so powerful for the autistic community. I am deeply sorry for anyone who is autistic or has autistic family members and has to witness this.

@@alexafromsouthcarolina5666 what's right with the film ?? that'd be a shorter answer, to start on the wrongs: casting an neurotypical (as far as we know) actress as a neurodivergent character is no bueno, having said character mock autistic people in such harmful ways, showcasing restraints that should NEVER be used on human beings because it can cause positional asphyxia (leads to death), sia repeatedly silenced autistic criticisms of the film, saying to one that "maybe you're just a bad actor" regarding their criticism abt the casting choice, a casting choice rooted in nepotism and possibly grooming, citing autism speaks, a popular HATE group that focuses on curing autism and highlights the parents' "sacrifices and struggles", and thats just the ableism

Sia, this is a beautiful movie. I have a friend, his name is Victor and he is practically represented in this film, he usually walks through the streets of the neighborhood, people know him and he stops to say hello, he does not speak but he holds out his hand and smiles. He likes to take pictures and draw. Sia your heart
your mind and spirit are on the right side. Maddie, you are an extraordinarily talented person and you have a beautiful aura. Congratulations to the entire cast.

I understand 💜 I have loved Sia and I absolutely adore Maddie what I don't understand is why this movie just wasn't done through the perspective of a neurotypical adult who had a love and compassion for a misrepresented and misunderstood community. She did not have to do it through the lense of an autistic individual when she was not using an autistic actor. She very easily could have conveyed her love and compassion from her own perspective. Had she done so I think this would have been far more successful and much more widely accepted by the community that the film is damaging.

This movie was about human interpersonal relationships, not a documentary about autism...and the autistic community should have embraced the idea and encouraged most people to see it and open a discussion on autism, adhd and other situations.
@@purpleballoon8367 I realize that some, not all, in the autistic community were offended. I have spoken with some high performing persons with autism. They were not offended. The community as a whole should embrace the opportunity to use the movie as a way to show the low performing autistic as someone to be cherished, not shunned...to embrace the family and friend aspect and to realize that Autism is a real and definite condition that needs help and support. I did not mean it as in loving it, but to use it to further the cause and case.

Not much was known about autism in the 1980s when Rain man was made, making it a pivotal moment for the autistic community. The problem is many representations of Autism on screen haven't diverged much or shown the much broader spectrum since then. Autistic actors in the industry also aren't given many opportunities and social media only recently has been able to give autistic people more autonomy. I am autistic and an actor myself in my final year of training, I'm researching representations of neurodiverse characters for my dissertation. Just wanted to clear this up for those who were curious.
I believe yes the film had so much more potential and some elements should have been changed, but I don't agree with some of the extreme abuse especially Maddie received x

It;s so sad what people are doing to sia. There are so many evil people to actually fight against and take down. So many actual evil things going on in the world right now that people choose to ignore and everyone just chooses to focus on nitpicking this creative woman who was just trying to speak out for people who dont have a voice of their own. Where is all this energy and indignation when we hear about drone strikes killing children in the middle east? or toddlers being put in jail at the border? There are so many things to be angry about in the world. and this woman isnt it.
The depiction of autism in the film is dangerous and harmful. The problem is she didn't cast an actual autistic person in the role. This movie does not positively represent neurodiversity.

I am big fan of you all of the costs i am team sia all of the awe I see the movie i was crying wne I watch it it was so beautiful
I cried too. It’s a very touching story line. I really don’t understand where all this negativity is coming from. I suffer with Dyspraxia..and apart of the neuro diverse population. Might even have mild type of autism. I don’t understand why everyone is taking such offence. I wouldn’t be offended if there was a movie with someone with severe Dyspraxia.
It wasn’t portrayed on a person with a mild form of autism...it was a severe form. It’s not Sia’s fault that people can be narrow minded about autism. The severity is based on where you are on the spectrum. It’s based on reality. The only issue I can understand is the restraint that is not suitable...aside from that I don’t see where the problem is. Someone with autism was upset because felt it was making fun of stimming...but that’s a reality to cope with an overload of your sensory environment. It’s a shame that people feel embarrassed about the way they have to cope...but it’s reality. Why hide from it? Autism might be stereotyped but Dyspraxia can be too. It really depends on the the severity as to what behaviour you exhibit etc.
I don’t see why sia had to cast an autistic girl too or have portrayed someone with a mild form of autism so it doesn’t draw negative attention.
@@tammyot I think a much bigger problem than the fact that Music's stimming was very stereotypical (because you're right, some people do fit some or maybe even many stereotypes) was Sia's response to the many different criticisms. How she insulted people for saying she should've included autistic people in the making of this film, how she then deleted her Twitter account instead of owning up to her mistakes, how she promised to add a disclaimer at the start and remove the restraint scenes and then didn't. About why the character of Music feels inauthentic, I've heard Jessie Gender make the very good point that Music is what she called symbolic representation, not really a full character but rather a stand in for the autistic community as a whole. Like, could you tell me any interest or character trait of Music other than she's autistic and she likes music? I'm not saying you can't enjoy the film (also that would be pretty hypocritical since my favourite book is Harry Potter, which has all sorts of fucked up implications when you think about some of it, not to mention J. K. Rowling), but it's anything but good representation or helpful for the autistic community.
Sia is on the autistic spectrum as am I which I could tell because I am too! & the movie really represents us well ! The artistic and beyond creativity sia is not a normal human she is a goddess and came here to heal us all. Sia (and the cast) clearly didn't listen to the autism community. The idea to say that this relates to autistic people is a lot of (insert your own word here). They used a lot of audio and visual noise that can trigger sensory overload not just to autistic people but people with other disabilities. All this movie/script screamed was a Saviour Complex! If you aren't autistic then how can you connect and understand the character itself? And in addition this interview continues to perpetuate ableistic notions, when trying to say that Forrest Gump, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Rainman are good movies that represent the autistic community! What a load of (insert your own word here)!

The only justice of this has been the amount of Razzies they got. Sia needs to stick to her lane of composing and singing songs and leave movie directing to professionals.

I suffer with Dyspraxia and can be overwhelmed with things being over stimulated...but more so outside. Struggle being in a crowd of people for example. I don’t think this movie has to be made for people who are neuro diverse to be able to watch it. It was not solely centred on music the character. I just think attacking sia is really unfair.
I can understand the backlash regarding the restraint that Sia clearly was ignorant about. But aside from that..where is the problem? It’s over stimulating yes but she was trying to creatively show what is in music’s mind. Sia should be able to express herself creatively how she wants and choose to portray some one with severe autism. How is Sia contributing to a stereotype that is none of her making. This is reality for someone with severe autism. When you are on the spectrum you either have it mildly or severely etc. Why can’t they show stimming for example? Someone with autism that does that is offended by that why? It’s the normal way someone copes with being overloaded with heightened sensory environment. It’s like Sia doing a movie on someone with severe Dyspraxia and I get offended by it.
There is a lot of ignorance with Autism and Dyspraxia but it’s not fair to attack Sia. And attack her for not casting someone with autism. It would have definitely been helpful to have had an Occupational therapist to have advised Sia regarding sensory issues but this is getting ridiculous. It’s a touching story and it’s quite sad that something that had so much meaning for Sia has been turned into something so negative.

For all the people that are telling that autism is totally different, I can tell you also some shocking truths, a real soldier in Vietnam wasn’t like Rambo was in the movies, that almost everybody loved. I can also tell not every Russian is a villain and not every Arabic looking guy is a terrorist as well, where we’re all the voices when all Islamic and Arabic looking people were only acting like terrorist that are killing innocent people until the American hero comes and saves everyone, the true is totally different, but nobody cares - nobody cares when ethic and religious groups were shown the wrong way? Yes, nobody cares because it’s just a movie, even if this was really dangerous, because many people are getting a bad impression of ethnic/religious groups, where were all this people that are complaining now? Why were they quiet?
Even if the movie don’t represent the truth, I can tell you because I like SIA and because I like Maddie very much, in my opinion this two had an outstanding talent, SIA is incomparable with her music and Maddie is such a great dancer/actor and she is making expressions with her face that are very special - in my opinion they two are the epitome of art! They are art!
So I watch the movie only because of them, if there was a actor with autism, I wouldn’t be interested at all and what was the result of it?
People are complaining: autism is much harder, people aren’t nice to people with autism, as they are in the movie! - hey but maybe they will after they see the movie, after the people see someone they like (Maddie) as someone who has autism, they will be nicer tomorrow when they meet a real person with autism, because this movie opens a door to a topic and look at us now! The world is talking about autism like never before? So the movie achieved even more, then any other movie could achieve here.
