    I have always thought, since 2015, memes are becoming increasingly Dadaist. I grew a new appreciation for these memes when I realized that.

    Dada is NOT nonsensical for nothing. Dada was designed to be a war protest movement and awake a search for a new morality - Richard Huelsenbeck. People need to delve deeper in their understanding of what Dada really is. The origin of the word IS clear. Nothing to do with Tzara. Huelsenbeck pointed to the word in the dictionary that Hugo Ball opened, looking for an alternative name for a Swiss singer scheduled to appear at the club, but whose name was unpronounceable. To say Dada has no mission is a total misrepresentation.

    I studied dada at high school.....this critique doesn't emphasise enough that dada was a response to the madness of ww1 of the rich industrialists sending of soldiers on all side to be slaughtered wholesale by the new industrial weapons such as the automatic gatlin gun and psychologically fucked up by nerve gases....dada was reflecting what the wealthy were implying....up was down....just as today....we have leaders in Australia and many other country saying 'coal is good for humanity'....this presentation is endemic of what the Internet is famous for....the retelling of history whilst removing all its teeth....I feel she is more interested in 'looking fb happy' than passing on the deep understanding of what dada was about.....look up some Otto Dix art works...sure he departed from dada....but he was influenced by dada that got him painting the tormented wrecks that came back from ww1 and littered the streets like car wrecks....that is dada

    Dada was actually primarily against anti-traditionalist art. It served as a means to ridicule and mock those bourgeois and their artists who saw the world through a subjective lens. It was to take their works and point out the ridiculousness of their subjectivity and lack of artistic value.

    General feel nice, upbeat, BUT you feature only men and the DADA movement was the FIRST significant moment for WOMEN artists to be active, to be equal to their male counterparts. You even ignore Emmy Hemmings who COFOUNDED Cabaret Voltaire. I would recommend redoing the otherwise engaging synopsis to include the amazing WOMEN of DADA.

    I suspect both Hitler and the Vatican hated dadaism, seeing that dada promoted a liberal and rebellious attitude towards traditional concepts of polarity, as in good versus bad ( from a popular social perspective ), or statistically normal versus statistically deviant. All art is political. And what constitutes good art is ultimately decided by consumers, though the art critics deride or extol a particular work. Which is why, Slapshot (Paul Newman) is a cult classic whilst few remember, The Sound of Music, which apparently won a bunch of Oscars.

    So would The webcomic Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff count as Dada? It's a very strange comic meant to be as nonsensical as possible and make fun of certain tropes and ideas (like when it makes fun of the token black friend trope by adding Geromy who's absolutely perfect and never screws up); however, it also exists as a sort of side comic to another, more logical work as well. Knowing this, does it still count?

    • @MysticalEric
      @MysticalEric 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that it could be considered dada. It clearly aims to overturn traditional tropes and expectations of the medium of webcomics (e.g. good art, punchlines, coherent narratives etc.). It's probably a safer bet to just call it surrealist, as this is what dada eventually became. I think dadaism refers specifically to the early surrealism, which came from an anti-war, leftist position.

    • @dooplon5083
      @dooplon5083 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MysticalEric Yeah, I figured ad much as well, but I felt getting a second opinion was a good idea anyway. :)
      Plus, it seems to have a basis in irony as well, and I don't think every Dada artist was aiming for an ironic angle.
