My thoughts exactly. It's so fascinating to see the ridiculous way in which memes have evolved and probably will continue to do so. And just in the span of a decade I feel like.
Dada is NOT nonsensical for nothing. Dada was designed to be a war protest movement and awake a search for a new morality - Richard Huelsenbeck. People need to delve deeper in their understanding of what Dada really is. The origin of the word IS clear. Nothing to do with Tzara. Huelsenbeck pointed to the word in the dictionary that Hugo Ball opened, looking for an alternative name for a Swiss singer scheduled to appear at the club, but whose name was unpronounceable. To say Dada has no mission is a total misrepresentation.
Yes I got a bit annoyed with the video, to the point I couldn't even finish it... it's like you let a random person briwse wikipedia and proclaim themselves an artist
All these people talking about how she talks. When to me, that's the most alluring thing about her. It makes her unique and beautiful. Be happy with your vanilla cone clones. And save the uniqueness for people like me who appreciate different.
I studied dada at high school.....this critique doesn't emphasise enough that dada was a response to the madness of ww1 of the rich industrialists sending of soldiers on all side to be slaughtered wholesale by the new industrial weapons such as the automatic gatlin gun and psychologically fucked up by nerve gases....dada was reflecting what the wealthy were implying....up was down....just as today....we have leaders in Australia and many other country saying 'coal is good for humanity'....this presentation is endemic of what the Internet is famous for....the retelling of history whilst removing all its teeth....I feel she is more interested in 'looking fb happy' than passing on the deep understanding of what dada was about.....look up some Otto Dix art works...sure he departed from dada....but he was influenced by dada that got him painting the tormented wrecks that came back from ww1 and littered the streets like car wrecks....that is dada
can you please tell me the significance of this quote:“the new painter creates a world, the elements of which are also its implements, a sober, definite work without argument”
Thanks for this summery, its a great intro. Everyone has slightly different opinions on this (some are just flippin rude(why do they bother?)) but I guess that's the idea. Keep every one on their toes.
The meaning of "Dada" according to Tristan Tzara during a french interview: "Dada was chosen randomly in a dictionnary for the reason it means nothing and it does not hold us to any dogmatism"
We watched this in my AP Art History Class! You make it very easy to understand this crazy thing called "Dadaism"! lol Btw, what kind of Asian are you?
I've always loved this kinda stuff never realized it had a name. There's so much that can fall under the category of dada from Andy Kaufman's anti-comedy to Kurt Cobains anti-solos. Again, just discovering this so maybe I'm wrong.
I'm in NY going for a second teacher's certification, first being special education. Since I completed all coursework for art and decided to take the exam to open up job options(state teacher's exam, visual art content) Since I completed course work years ago and only do photography now...I was wondering do you have any advice on how to study for this? Are you familiar with this type of exam, maybe you have the certification?
Dada was actually primarily against anti-traditionalist art. It served as a means to ridicule and mock those bourgeois and their artists who saw the world through a subjective lens. It was to take their works and point out the ridiculousness of their subjectivity and lack of artistic value.
I suspect both Hitler and the Vatican hated dadaism, seeing that dada promoted a liberal and rebellious attitude towards traditional concepts of polarity, as in good versus bad ( from a popular social perspective ), or statistically normal versus statistically deviant. All art is political. And what constitutes good art is ultimately decided by consumers, though the art critics deride or extol a particular work. Which is why, Slapshot (Paul Newman) is a cult classic whilst few remember, The Sound of Music, which apparently won a bunch of Oscars.

At one point, the content on your shelves in the background changes. It would have been cool to do this on purpose periodically - to have dada things happen subtly throughout your video. I like your video.
Personally, I strive for true and wholly uninterpretable nonsense for my art. I find that there is nothing more satisfying than "getting" that there is nothing to "get". I think this sets me apart from Dada, but what do I know?
Yay! I don't know why, but I always thought that Dada was the name of an artist, although now that I think about it it's probably because my brain's ridiculous and things Dada==Dali (although to be fair, Our Friend Sal is a bit of a surrealist himself so I mean it's not THAT farfetched... right?)
So would The webcomic Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff count as Dada? It's a very strange comic meant to be as nonsensical as possible and make fun of certain tropes and ideas (like when it makes fun of the token black friend trope by adding Geromy who's absolutely perfect and never screws up); however, it also exists as a sort of side comic to another, more logical work as well. Knowing this, does it still count?
I think that it could be considered dada. It clearly aims to overturn traditional tropes and expectations of the medium of webcomics (e.g. good art, punchlines, coherent narratives etc.). It's probably a safer bet to just call it surrealist, as this is what dada eventually became. I think dadaism refers specifically to the early surrealism, which came from an anti-war, leftist position.
MysticalEric Yeah, I figured ad much as well, but I felt getting a second opinion was a good idea anyway. :) Plus, it seems to have a basis in irony as well, and I don't think every Dada artist was aiming for an ironic angle.
General feel nice, upbeat, BUT you feature only men and the DADA movement was the FIRST significant moment for WOMEN artists to be active, to be equal to their male counterparts. You even ignore Emmy Hemmings who COFOUNDED Cabaret Voltaire. I would recommend redoing the otherwise engaging synopsis to include the amazing WOMEN of DADA.
ForeverScape'll clear out some of your old, stale, ideas =). Please, this is a call to papers to re-write the history on ForeverScape Art. No other artist with a piece larger than the Titanic has their own mobile app.

aren't we in a sort of dadaist movement now but with memes?
autopilotfootprints yep, neo-dadaism is essentially what meme culture is.
Dadaism is pretty much shit posting before shit posting was a thing.
My thoughts exactly. It's so fascinating to see the ridiculous way in which memes have evolved and probably will continue to do so. And just in the span of a decade I feel like.
YTPs are post-dadaism
We are in a similar environment, lots of meaninglessness and general disconent just like what birthed dadaism originally.
I have always thought, since 2015, memes are becoming increasingly Dadaist. I grew a new appreciation for these memes when I realized that.

thank you for educating people on that - what Dada was designed to do - there was critical thinking behind it and we need that again now!
They're very serious about not being serious.
Dada was a reaction of the first world war and all of the anger frustration and conflict that went with it. It was an anti-art movement.
we feel ripe for neo-dada
The books on the shelf keep changing. I am assuming this is intentional.

Yeah, I've had fairly post-Dadaist philosophy for several years now and have engaged in the Dadaism myself. Your energy to talk about it is nice.

I love your talks and use them in my Art History classes. You should add The Baroness to this video--OR make a whole video about her~:)

True
Nice and informative video, the only downside is the audio.
If you've ever wondered what the Police song, "Do Do Do, Da, Da, Da" is really about, here's your explanation.

Interesting info!!! TKU
Nice little art talk.
Superb👏
It's .. not bad ? But in the concept of dadaist polarity, simply because some thing is not bad, does not make it automatically, good.
