You're right! Deltarune is technically is Toby's own Undertale AU, though on the Steam site it says "parallel story". Jaru has actually done a video on that, you could check that out.

@@Fort_Master The first one is called "Alternate Timeline or Alternate Reality", but he actually revised that one in a video called "Revised Multiversal Theory". I think you should watch both to get the bigger picture, but keep in mind that there are some flaws with the first video.

59:50 the simplest but probably worst way to program it explanation, there’s definitely a file that is DEEP in the operating stuff of the actual game that most programmers and even data miners would never dare touch (the kind of stuff that irrevocably corrupts or breaks your game files if messed with incorrectly) that tells the window what to display in the “name” text box when it opens
And there’s probably a way to set up an “array” (specific programming concept) which has all possible names listed and attached to a value (Survey Program = 0, empty value for blank = 1, The Beginning = 2, that kind of thing)
And then there would be several paragraphs of code following that which would say “when scene # plays, name = array value #” or “when audio file Y plays, name = array value #”

@@TheSkyGuy77only thing that could ever confirm or deny that is the fact that there is a continuous lack of ability to use magic outside of the Darkworlds. If that persists it’s very unlikely, if someone uses magic then it suddenly becomes concerningly likely

@@TheSkyGuy77Toby Fox said it himself multiple times that Undertale and Deltarune plot lines have nothing to do with one another (as in they won’t be interacting with one another and what you did in Undertale does not matter in Deltarune). This is an Alternative Universe setting, if anything. Not a prequel, nor a sequel

What if Sans and Papyrus are from Deltarune? And if that's the case, and Gaster created Deltarune (as far as we know), then them going from DR to Undertale would be like a fictional character travelling to the real world. 👀

Every character in Deltarune exists parallel to Undertale. They’re not connected universes, but alternatives. We’re not even sure if the Gaster in Undertale is the same Gaster as Deltarune. After all, the starting track of the game is called “Another Him” implying that perhaps the Gaster here is completely different, or an AU version of Gaster. Hell, it could perhaps be the “piece” of him that got scattered across dimensions.
