No, you’re not over-exaggerating how good Perry’s voice is. Like I said, I took this music for granted, but they are phenomenal.
You’re not wrong. Steve Perry is most definitely top tier rock singer. You can argue who’s best, but he’s definitely in the mix.

I grew up listening to Steve Perry and Journey, and I really did take it for granted. People aren’t creating music like this anymore.
"Lights" should definitely be on your list!! I think it's one of their best, vocally!!!
When you react to Lights, make sure you choose Lights/Stay Awhile Live in Houston 1981 and listen to both songs as Lights leads into Stay Awhile.
Mother Father is a great song. Shows his range, and missing you by Steve Perry ( the lead singer) is absolutely beautiful..

Not exaggerating. In his prime he was on another level, alone. You have only scratched the surface. Anything off Live in Houston 1981. Probably his greatest vocal performance. The whole concert was flawless.
My favorite Journey song. This one launched them into the stratosphere and made them Rock legends.
Steve Perry is called " The Voice " for a reason. He is better live than studio. check out " anyway you want it " from the 1981 houston concert - epic vocal abilities.
Lights is probably their best song but no one has reacted to it ( ...I think) , Neal Schon on guitar, he started his career as a teenage prodigy trading licks with the great Carlos Santana in his band. Steve Perry on vocals....one of thE best voices imo.

Geez , Lights is ok, but i can think of 20 songs better, many deeper cuts. I personally think Raised on Radio might be my fav. Suzzane is another one. Send Her My Love is also better. And i think their best hard edge song is Be Good To Yourself
God I hate that song. It's really popular, which isn't helping, but of all the Journey songs during the Perry years that's the one I would live quite happily if I never heard it again.

He also had solo songs like “Missing You” ❤ and others.I’m sure that you have seen in your comments “Don’t Stop Believe’n”and many more, it would be wise to start with the songs from the “ESCAPE” ALBUM !!! When Journey came out, almost every guy in high school picked Steve Perry as the person they would like to sing like. Even beating out Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth who were also high on that list.

The last one you did was Faithfully, which was released in 1983 … this one (Wheel) was released in 1978 … same guy (Steve Perry) but probably matured a bit in those 5 years … better equipment too I imagine 🤷♀️ But YES his voice is amazing and one of the best in my opinion as well!!! I would pick him over some others that I like as well (😳😜 maybe I did 🤷♀️🤣), his voice is just phenomenal!!! And you just cannot deny that!!!

Lights is a great one. From the 1980 Osaka concert they do Stay Awhile together. I love Dixie Highway and walks like a lady from the same concert. Steve Perry is a phenomenal singer. My opinion the best there ever was. Some other songs from the Escape tour in Houston is open arms, Escape, mother father, stone in love, in the line of fire. others are loving touching squeezing, send her my love, girl can't help it, anyway you want it, and there's so much more. No you're not exaggerating
This song was a poem written by the bassist's, Ross Valory, wife. The poem was called "Wheels in my Mind". I had the .45 single back in the day and I played it out. Many people think that the ethereal sound during Neal's guitar solo is either Neal's guitar or another instrument, but it is Steve.
This is off Journey's best album, IMO, Infinity. Every song is great...😎You can't deny the voice

Being from San Francisco Journey is a big deal. I grew up listening to them. Steve Perry's voice is otherworldly. Faithfully, Separate Ways, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin', Lights, Don't Stop Believing, Only The Young. I always find it amusing when people first hear Steve's voice, yes he is a rock god. That guitar intro, in the beginning, is so badass too. They were amazing musicians and incredible songs writers, coupled with Steve's voice, why they are such an amazing band.
For me, Steve has always had the best male voice. Ever. Pretty sure no one will ever displace him.

Hey Biz, Steves amazing vocalist (sounds as good live as recorded) and the band is always slammin, thats why hes known as "The Voice". Saw them live in 70s and 80s when we had to actually follow our artist before the net and social media. Watching them live is always best anyways. Oh, how I love when he holds that long note. The amazing Journey with the iconic Steve Perry. Check out Mother, Father from their 1981 concert in Houston. It is unbelievable.
The Journey rabbit hole is great. I'm partial to the Greg Rolie days like this, although the Jonathan Cain era was great too, just a bit more pop and commercial. I saw Journey on the Escape tour in 1982 with Loverboy opening up. One of the greatest shows ever and I went with my parents. They were incredible and Steve Perry sounds just as good if not better live.
Totally with you on the Greg Rolie days GoldenRuleTv. Unbelievable harmonies with that line up. Still not bad after he left but for me, Journey was at their best with that early lineup.
"Feeling that way" is a must listen by Journey.

I saw Steve Perry for the first time here in Fresno. Way before Journey. He was the drummer in a local rock band. As far as I remember he did no vocals
He says he was a drummer/singer before Journey. He sang while playing drums. Must have just not done it when you saw him. How good of a drummer was he? I am very curious. Journey once talked about putting a second drum set on stage for him, but they never did it.

Along with Freddie Mercury, Paul Rodgers and a few others Steve Perry is an elite Rock vocalist.

Love the reaction and review of a band that was, while very successful, under rated in terms of song writing and individual musical talent. What I would recommend, as a life long Journey/Steve Perry fan would be skip many of the "go to" reaction songs and skip over to the proverbial "B" side of both Journey and Steve Perry solo stuff. So try "Lay It Down" by Journey off their "Escape" album. Perhaps one of the hardest vocals in their line up next to "Mother, Father".
Off their Journey album "Raised On Radio" try "Why can't this night go on forever" and pay attention to the emotion of the song and how he ends the vocals. Diving deeper try and find a little unknown song called "Natural Thing" also "Don't be down on me baby" from "Trial By Fire" which is perhaps one of my favorite Journey songs.
For Steve solo stuff give "Melody" a listen to from his "Greatest Hits" album. While listening to this song ask yourself if he is singing about a woman named Melody or if it's a song about the "melody" of a song. If you want to hear some of his soul come thru then try "Somewhere there's hope" from "For the love of strange medicine" album. Lastly give "Running Alone" a try from his "Street Talk" album.
You'll notice his voice changes thru the years as he has aged and because of the non stop touring they did he basically blew his vocal chords BUT even at 70 years old he has an amazing soulful voice and is distinctly Steve Perry and my life has his voice etched into it.

You are not over exaggerating Steve Perry in his prime. This was their first big song that carried them to stardom. They had other good songs early in their career but this was the first to get significant radio play.
Dude, if you really want to appreciate his vocals just watch some of the clips from the 1980 concert in Houston. No auto tune just Steve at his peak.
