Being from San Francisco Journey is a big deal. I grew up listening to them. Steve Perry's voice is otherworldly. Faithfully, Separate Ways, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin', Lights, Don't Stop Believing, Only The Young. I always find it amusing when people first hear Steve's voice, yes he is a rock god. That guitar intro, in the beginning, is so badass too. They were amazing musicians and incredible songs writers, coupled with Steve's voice, why they are such an amazing band.

The Journey rabbit hole is great. I'm partial to the Greg Rolie days like this, although the Jonathan Cain era was great too, just a bit more pop and commercial. I saw Journey on the Escape tour in 1982 with Loverboy opening up. One of the greatest shows ever and I went with my parents. They were incredible and Steve Perry sounds just as good if not better live.

What I would recommend, as a life long Journey/Steve Perry fan would be skip many of the "go to" reaction songs and skip over to the proverbial "B" side of both Journey and Steve Perry solo stuff. So try "Lay It Down" by Journey off their "Escape" album. Perhaps one of the hardest vocals in their line up next to "Mother, Father". Off their Journey album "Raised On Radio" try "Why can't this night go on forever" and pay attention to the emotion of the song and how he ends the vocals. Diving deeper try and find a little unknown song called "Natural Thing" also "Don't be down on me baby" from "Trial By Fire" which is perhaps one of my favorite Journey songs. For Steve solo stuff give "Melody" a listen to from his "Greatest Hits" album. While listening to this song ask yourself if he is singing about a woman named Melody or if it's a song about the "melody" of a song. If you want to hear some of his soul come thru then try "Somewhere there's hope" from "For the love of strange medicine" album. Lastly give "Running Alone" a try from his "Street Talk" album. You'll notice his voice changes thru the years as he has aged and because of the non stop touring they did he basically blew his vocal chords BUT even at 70 years old he has an amazing soulful voice and is distinctly Steve Perry and my life has his voice etched into it.
