    I love how this setting has both the typical rugged and impoverished desert world (Maiala’s Rest) and a prosperous desert world (Firewatch.)

    Love the lore and can't wait for the next season! Hate that my curiousity won't be sated and I won't be hearing about the secrets of the sanctum for quite some time :C
    I always wondered about the premise though. What's the cause of the famine? Couldn't that be staved off by artificial fertilizers or large scale hydroponic stations? The worlds of Tantalus cannot be THAT devoid of nutrients can they?

      Well, I can’t remember exactly where he covered that, but from what I understand it is somewhat related to the Phosphorus Problem. Since there weren’t enough of the right kind of stars to make life essential elements like Phosphorous in Tantalus, and because colonization was done so haphazardly, they quickly grew up against a brick wall and used up what little elements they got. They could have built as many orbital farms as they liked, but they ran out of the right elements to grow the crops they needed. Isaac Arthur has an interesting video that goes into the Phosphorus Problem in greater detail.th-cam.com/video/oPU9jeQbTOU/w-d-xo.html

      I remember that phosphorus line too, however I don't think it's that big of an issue. Waste treatment can still filter out a lot of nutrients (Phosphorus isn't an exception) and I think most of Tantalus has access to running water and sewage systems. And to get a little unsavory here but if the circumstances are dire, even corpses can be recycelt. So it should be more or less a closed system.
      I'll watch the video, maybe I get a better grasp of the problem then. It's been a while since I stopped by isaac arthurs channel.

    Question: Why are most of the settlements located on the planet's equator? If extreme heat and lack of drinking water are such major issues wouldn't it be logical to set up colonies near the poles, where it's likely cooler and has comparably more water?

    • @planetfall5056
      @planetfall5056 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I believe there was a study done on the climatology of the world of Dune. And if the capital city was near the north pole was a good idea. IIRC it concluded that the poles had such massive temperature swings, parts of the year it got significantly hotter than the equator ever did, so it would be better to build the city further south. Don't know how much that had to do with specific mountain ranges and axial tilt. Might not be the same on this world.

      it might have to do with the surface launching of space ships? The same way our own space ship launches prefer equatorial launch sites?

    How did they even fight when the frontier war happened?

    • @instantimagination8163
      @instantimagination8163 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Basically, the Assembly wasn't prepared for a war so the limited forces available to the Union were able to rush a few systems before the Assembly could organize a defense. After that it seems that Teldrin provided the majority of the industry and ship building facilities while Maiala's Rest made up a lot of the manpower and ideological fervor throughout the war. Teldrin seems to have a lot of useful materials and a natural satellite for space ship construction, but a relatively small population.

    • @facelesscleric2744

      It depends on what technology you have access to but dropping ice comets on it to solve the water loss would probably be where most people would start.

    • @cptnoname
      @cptnoname ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would think that ice comets would have more than just ice in them and that "dropping" them, and the volatiles that they'd likely contain, on a habitable planet would likely do more harm than good. The rate at which this planet seems to be losing water and hydrogen, I think you'd be better off building space habitats
