You are correct - they are quality. They support and compliment each other, when one is singing lead, there is always another to cover the 'behind' sounds, no egos, no one upmanship, just pure talent and respect. And I love them for it. They do seem so happy and to enjoy being with each other. Makes their music even better in my humble opinion. Where to go next..... Aha! Singapore Vista - are you ready - a fan cam recording, so not a professional clip, but amazing and gives you the live vibe of the concert (and yes, Kevin is there, just not caught on camera). Watch it if you dare!

What a great reaction! Part of what makes PTX so great is the lack of egos in the band. It's all about the music and what sounds best. In this instance, Mitch singing in his lower register to allow Kirstin to soar and a surprise finish of Kevin in his falsetto. They really are the best at what they do! I highly recommend "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?“. The harmonies are sublime and Mitch hits the stratosphere. But my favorite part is Matt's bassline. It is killer! For more upbeat songs "New Rules x Are You That Somebody" and "Come Along" are both excellent choices. Both of which Kevin and Matt really shine. Their original song "Coffee In Bed" is great also. Can't wait to see more PTX reactions.

I’m not a religious person, but this one takes me to church. 🙏🏻 I love the buildup in this one. The location is beautiful, the harmonies are stellar as usual, and then the #MicDrop when Kevin, their beatboxer sings. 😳 Great reaction!
What’s next? Try their 90s Dance Medley, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, Mad World, Problem, Daft Punk Medley, La La Latch, Can’t Hold Us, Havana. Keep going down the rabbit hole! 😎

You’ve done a few classic covers from them, so I think you should react to:

They DO smile when the music calls for it. These people are not only incredible singers and musicians, the are wonderful ACTORS! See "Say Something" - the sadness of breaking up is written on them. See "Love Again" for people who are post-apocalyptic. See "Mad World" for people who are depressed by society & the way humans go unseen. Then there's "Come Along" for silliness (lots of made-up words from Alice in Wonderland) & playfulness. Brother, you've got a long way to go down the Rabbit Hole! Welcome to the Pentaholics, those of us who so enjoy the whole vibe of the Pentatonix. It's such a delightful journey.

I know Pentatonix has a really vast and wonderful catalog of music, that some of the other more recent songs get over looked. 2 of the songs that they recorded during Covid lock down and from their separate homes, were "Blinding Lights" by the Weekend & "When the Parties Over " by Billie Eilish. They are both just phenomenal.

  • @kayecastleman6353

I'm so enjoying your appreciation of Pentatonix! Thanks for another wonderful reaction. As a Brit, I thought you might pick up on the dissonant 'droning' effect in the first verse that is their vocal representation of bagpipes. You danced all around it, mentioning funerals and odd chords and the solemn beginning to the song, but their allusion to the internationally recognized use of bagpipes to play this song at the most solemn occasions is missed by most reactors on first listen. Of course, once you know, you can't 'unhear' it, and it becomes another "quality" aspect of the performance.

The "doo-doos" are called "bell tones". I loved watching you see their video and shake your head as if to say "unbelievable". Yep....They are perfectionists. They don't release a cover or original until they've worked on it 110%. Their work ethic is amazing. They have to be perfect because they can't hide any mistakes behind an instrument.

Please have a look at some of their more up-tempo songs; it really gives you an idea of the sheer reach this group can do. Suggestions include Daft Punk (an EDM medley done a cappella), Can't Hold Us (a Macklemore cover including rap verses), or even the 90's Dance Medley (will get you dancing in your seat)! Songs like these area a great way to show off just how TIGHT this group is, not only in pitch/timbre, but in timing as well.

This is one of those songs that ironically sails past the beloved words to touch a listener's heart and emotions in ways you can't really explain. 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight' from The Lion King is a must, and they did a gorgeous cover of Billie Eilish's 'When The Party's Over.' If you want to see how versatile they are, they've also done Macklemore's 'Can't Hold Us' (they were SO young then!) Nicki Minaj's 'Starships' and Omi's 'Cheerleader.' And if you want a taste of some of their otiginal works, you could try 'Love Again' (if you thought Daft Punk was crazy creative, this one will blow your mind!) 'Coffee In Bed' and 'Happy Now.'

This song has an almost stereotypical (if you can use that word with PTX!) use of the "wall of sound" for the "My Chains Are Gone" portion of Kirstie's verse, and then drops to almost nothing for her to finish and Kevin to spring his little surprise. That large dynamic change, and then drop to silence (or near silence) towards the end of a song is something that they have used several times in various songs.

I think you should explore their roots. Starting with their first appearance on Season 3 of The Sing-Off (a cappella competition show) in 2011. That is where Pentatonix started. Kirstie, Mitch and Scott (The Trio) have know each other since elementary school, but PTX didn't form until the Sing-Off. You don't need to show us your reactions, but I think you would really appreciate seeing where they started. They were darned good from the get-go, but you can still see how much they have improved. TH-camr mrduckbear11 has the full list of their appearances along with the judges opinions (which are really worth watching). Mitch, Kirstie and Scott were all 19 when they were on the show (from youngest to oldest - I believe Mitch turned 19 just before the show started airing or just after). Kevin is the oldest (but not by a whole lot) with Avi in between the Trio and Kevin. When Matt joined the group, he became the youngest member.

in the beginning portion of the song (where Matt is singing) you will hear a constant undertone - this is Kevin and Kirstie holding it down. It is a nod to the drone note of a bagpipe, which is often one of the most traditional (and haunting) ways Amazing Grace is performed. (here's a link to a sole piper playing it, then joined in by a chorus of pipers in unison, then a final verse with pipes in harmony and the drum band accompaniment - it is breathtaking! th-cam.com/video/lpZiPZwwXhM/w-d-xo.html

The little do-do-do on different notes = arpeggiated chords: chords where each tone is sounded separately, as an arpeggio, instead of all at the same time. This performance features the rarity of Mitch belting full out in his lower range, instead of soaring high. Yes, their amazing overlapping ranges allow them to do extremely sophisticated, unique arrangements. As far as the smiles go: actually, part of that is using the best mouth position for holding those notes long and well, although most of them do have ready smiles (Matt is a champion smiler!). You'll also see their tongues being held level just behind their teeth on those long notes: that's another technique. Some of the vocal coach reactors have noted approvingly that PTX use all these pro tools in their singing.
Do Daft Punk medley please, and La La Latch, Radioactive (with Lindsey Stirling), Shallow, and Can You Feel the Love Tonight. And if you do the live Aha! in Singapore, I suggest doing the official video first, so you have some idea of what's going on. Finally, if you want to see what they're like in concert, I suggest the Popspring Live 2016 recording, where they do a short set (4 songs, 3 of them originals - Mitch raps on one - and the other their Evolution of Michael Jackson medley).

@/pentatonix @/athome @/blindinglights.....I am not sure why these 2 videos are over looked in peoples reactions. "Blinding Lights" by the Weekend and @/pentatonix @/athome @/whenthepartysover..."When the Parties Over " by Billie Eilish. These were both recorded during Covid lockdown from their respective homes and they are absolutely phenomenal.

PTX are brilliant and moving. But - Home Free, esp Geoff Castelluci, are more a capella with a slightly different focus. And then there is VoicePlay. The rabbit hole is a warren.

Home Free and Voiceplay though use much simpler arrangements. They are much more traditional a capella depending on great voices.

Im sooo disappointed that you feel like you have to use the “F” word in your reaction to such a gorgeous, spiritual song as amazing grace. You have a mixed audience here. Not everyone wants to hear that filth.
