    I think these reading tracking websites should include a feature to show from which countries authors are... it seems most of us (or me at least) read a lot of European/western literature, but very little from other parts of the world... visualising this could maybe prompt people to pick out books from other parts of the world as well

    • @macylightfoot
      @macylightfoot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +107

      The storygraph does reading challenges that encourage people to read more from other countries. They put up the prompts and users can add books to each one so you end up with loads of recommendations from different places, and you can see which countries you've read from and which you haven't.

    • @oliverxhmll
      @oliverxhmll 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      English translations of books aren't always good. They often don't capture what the author had in mind. For example, I'm Polish and the English translation of the witcher books is horrendous. I think I'd rather read something that's well written rather than reading books based on the author's geographical location

    • @macylightfoot
      @macylightfoot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      @@oliverxhmll well yeah, there's lots of translations that aren't great, but there's lots that are. I don't think you can write off every single book not originally written in a language you speak though, just because the translation might be bad.
      But again that's where the storygraph is good because you can join one of the books in translation challenges and see a huge list of books that you might not have known about otherwise. I would say it's up to the individual reader to look into the quality of translation themselves, which is relatively easy to do by clicking through the lists and reading a few reviews.

    • @melaniek6714
      @melaniek6714 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@oliverxhmll Interesting point! I'm German and I find most English translations of books I like to at least be acceptable (better than people not reading them at all if they don't speak the language), and the German ones of English books to be really good for the most part... I also often read foreign classics where I'm hoping the English/German translations are at least decent. I would guess with a more niche book that might not sell so well, publishers probably hire less skilled/experienced translators which might miss the character/intent of the original

    A few things to consider:
    1. Jack mentions very clearly in the video his job involves reading…A LOT!
    2. Reading one fantastic book a year is better than inhaling 376 books, which you can’t remember anything about anyway.

    SG Librarian here! Some of the genres at The Storygraph are meant for non fiction books only - e.g. race, politics, sociology, feminism etc. So a fiction book that covers issues like racism doesn't count under race. On the other hand, some are meant exclusively for fiction - Historical, Mystery, SciFi etc. Hope that clears some things up! :) if you ever stumble across a book that you think has been miscategorized (pace, mood, genre) feel free to send a ticket and a librarian will take a look at it. :)

    I am absolutely in love with the story graph and quite glad you recommended it earlier this year.. I'm constantly staring at my reading stats and they're actually motivating me to read more. and the "pages read in a year" is also great because I tend to read long books and they don't show up well in the book stats but in the pages stats they do. kind of reversed of what happens to you

    this year my family did secret santa so i put ur reading log as one of the things on my wishlist, and my dad thought the list of recommended books in it was what i wanted… so he got my Lord of the Flies but he said it’s written by a Nobel prize winner (or something like that) and i can’t wait to read it! :D

    Just wanted to say that I'm so glad I discovered your channel this year! I never really liked to read but I saw your Maeve video and just started binging on your videos and started to get interested in some of the books you talked about.
    I started making a TBR list and read 8 books this year (but actually just like second half of the year). I never really read for fun before so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed reading. Anyways, just wanted to let you know you're appreciated 😊
    Love from Brazil 🇧🇷❤️

    Considering this is likely the last video of the year on this channel I just wanted to thank you for your videos and for accompanying me through the year. Your chanels have become part of my few favorites, and that goes to show how interesting your videos are and how I want to keep coming back for them each time :) 💛 Anyway, that's it with the sentimental commentary. Can't wait for next year!!

    great video once again Jack. Goodreads does actually have most of these in their Stats section (except for the genre & moods breakdown), although definitely less pleasing to the eye and not as extensive/interactive. cannot wait to see what the next year brings.

I've always loved reading but just really got back into it this year (for me, that means I read 15 books instead of like,,, 1) and it's been so cool to also find this youtube channel & community of readers to keep me excited about reading! Looking forward to reading more in 2022!

    This was really cool to see how users interact with TSG. Books CAN have more than one genre actually and if you feel a genre is missing or mood or pace or incorrect, put in a book ticket and a librarian will handle it!

    For 'hopeful', I would have to recommend The Wayfarer series by Becky Chambers, kicking off with book 1: The Long Way To a Small Angry Planet. It's sci-fi, which isn't a genre I go for at all. But it isn't hugely plot-based. It really focuses on themes of cultural diversity and integration, immigration, refugees, race, gender identity, different neurotypes, different relationships, etc, in the most beautiful, quirky, funny and hopeful way. My favourite was definitely book 2: A Closed and Common Orbit. It's a 4-book series, and they need to be read in order.
