Old Australian Commercials from the 1960s & 1970s [Re-upload]

  • This is a re-upload as my previous video was done back before I had the capture device that I am currently using, and was very choppy. Technically this should be better quality.
All of these commercials were aired in Australia during the 1960s and 1970s. I have a unique VHS that contains all of these. Originally I had broken them up into segments; however, I have now uploaded them all together as they are shown on the VHS.

Thanks for taking the effort to post these old Aus commercials - I remember most of them. An important window to the past.

These are originally from McCann-Erickson show reels. I copied all of these and many many more from about 15 High Band UMatic (60 min) tapes back in the mid 1980s when I did an internship in the Melbourne office. The quality was a 100 times better. I probably still have the tapes somewhere. The originals were stored in caves somewhere in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney where it was cool, but just tosted anywhere.

      McCann-Erickson Melbourne office you say, mid 80s . . .
Did you know John May. Brilliant young man.
He walked into the office with some of his ideas when he finished Physics at Melbourne uni.
They took him on. His first ad used was black and white image of a hand on the dynamite plunger in silhouette.
Then the biscuit ad, I think arnotts assorted cream, where a saxophone was blowing out biscuits along with notes.
He went on to new York. Did Levi . . Guy doing washing, music "respect", and Levi Legend, of gold miners I think.
      Coca Cola, kylie ordering pizza.
Any of that ring a bell?
      He turned 20 in '84.
I'd love to hear from you

There was an ad for sugar: "Coffee sugar, caster sugar, raw, cubed, and brown, All these different sugars make the world go 'round."

Inflation, mate. Prices went up but so did wages. Real income, so stripping out inflation, is about double today what it was in 1970.

The Toyota commercial inadvertently (and incorrectly) says that Toyotas are such shite that you'll need to replace them every 3 years. My dad and brother have gotten 15+ years out of their Toyotas.

Funny to think that most of the Western world was already watching TV in this era in Colour.

Color TV by the 1960s in the UK and USA but not until 1975 in Australia. But my mother was saying in 1974 that much of America was still on b / w televisions because of socio-economic reasons. Then I casually took that up, in class, with one of a couple of expatriate American teachers and he said that what I had heard was since negotiated and it was basically color all the way in the USA.

Great ads. But it makes me sad to hear the Aussie accents back then deteriorate to the citified wishi-washi-ness that we hear today ...
