I love the live performance much more than their studio recording. I saw this one on TV a few weeks ago, and was literally mesmerizing and kept my breath. What a beautiful tune!
I'm a christian but also know that praying to a god that he does not believe in for this song actually means the god of love "aphrodites" which is the original translation.
@bigsexyblondiedreads you're right, I didn't consider that perspective but I compare their performance with many other singers/bands who really perform in a great way on live too. every band who tours a lot has got this "problem"!
About the God topic I think what he really is trying to say it when you have been thru really tough times and you don't feel there's anybody else looking after you and you have doubts but you still believe in him even though the circumstances.
i simply enjoy this great song regardless of the fact that he believes in God or not, when i sing i change it to 'praying to a God that i do believe in' no need for a controversy here, just enjoy this great song :)
I thought he said "praying to a guy that I don't believe in". Huh. Guess you do learn something new every day. It's a great song and I love it no matter what they sing :)
@VirtualInsanity I agree that they shouldn't change it because no one should be judged for what they believe in. I mean if it bugs someone so much they can just sing it a different way, it is a simple solution.
"Pray to a God that i dont believe in..." means that He started praying to God that he didnt believe before (he redeemed his faith) because of the heartache that he had. not he prayed to the other god.. I dont know why people react to the lyrics? It just sounded right when i first heard this...
"praying to a God that i don't believe in" could actually have absolutely nothing to do with religion. more, it has to do with being desperate and in love. he's so in love with this girl and desperate to get her back that he even resorts to praying to a God he doesn't even BELIEVE in! that shows something and his love for her. i really don't see it as a religious thing at all, it simply strengthens the emotions he's feeling/singing about this girl he's referring to.
@chaneloxo that's cause everyone thinks singing is easy and it aint...studio albums are relaly doctored....that's why the quality of a band is measured live....i.e. Dave Matthews Band (with Leroi Moore r.i.p.) ....might i say.....awesome.
I agree with you on the term "Oh my God" and the celebration of Christmas, but how does that relate to this argument? It's pretty clear what he means, surely?
I don't understand people who get offended when it says "just praying to a God that I don't believe in." He's not shouting some anti-God bullshit or something--though I believe in God, sometimes you're so down in the dumps that you just feel like absolutely NO ONE is around you, which is probably the message he's trying to convey in this song. I hate that they changed it on several radio stations...
"He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife." - Douglas Adams
People need to not bring religion into everything. A lyrics mentions God, it doesn't mean we need to argue and debate religious views. Religion doesn't define a person nor does being an atheist. Watch the performance and enjoy!
i think everyone should be reminded that now he tours and his voice is strained show after show, that's why his voice is weaker in other videos, i think he's a drinker and smoker too. but when you go back to vids like this, we all know why we fell in love the first time :)
He's not saying there is no god but that his pain has caused him to start believing in God. If there's Evil Pain, there has to be Good to counteract it.
just a thought but perhaps the line ''just praying to a god that i dont believe in'' means that he doesnt believe that god is able to send helo but is so desperate that he is willing to pray to God. just a thought
I wasn't having a go, and I apologise if that's how it came across. I just think, given the context of the song, that the meaning of that line is pretty clear.
I dont know what is to take offence to in just prayed to a god I dont believe in. Honestly why are people so hyper sensitive. Do you think God needs anybody to fight its battles? no dont think so plus he is not trying to criticise so quit the b/s and enjoy this song. Go on Ireland!!!
@toxic2k7 I'm sorry if I've hurted your feelings, I'm just saying that his voice is not as good as I thought after listening to their songs.. just relax man ;)
I would say that this song is really difficult too, but just because the performance isn't the same as the track on the cd doesn't mean it is a bad job. I think that if you are a singer you need to get into the song. Not saying that you change it up all the time but thats why, if i could, I'd only see a band i like live that way you don't criticize it on the performance on the track. because face it those things are synced so far its not even a human singing anymore! lol
well, see the other side, if you want to comment it... he does not believe but he prays to, it's a paradox... you don't believe cos you were raised like this or it's your choice or whatever..still there are moments when you just speak to someone cos you cannot find a place for yourself and then you say: hey, I don't believe in you and you laught at yourself. Well I cannot say fully what's on my mind here:) but I just treat it as a kind of poet's concept to descibe his feelings, a paradox
actually, no gods truly exist, being they were created to explain things and even to put fear into people so they would do the right things. And even if a god or multiple gods existed, you would never know which one.
I can't understand why you all say that he's amazing.. he does not sound like the album version (THAT is incredible) and it's way under what I expected from your comments.. the band plays in a great way but the singer's voice is barely acceptable.
He does choke a bit live sometimes. This song is really ahrd to sing, it obviously pushes his range to the limit. If you're a singer you know your limit isn't always exactly the same, so he probably got it good in the studio and can't hit it all the time live. The performance on Ellen was good, though.
1. They're all Catholics and believe in God. 2. the lyric, danny said HIMSELF, he doesn't like. 3. It actually has to do with the guy feeling so depressed he lost faith in not only his relationship but life. 4.Know what you say before you say it, thanks
That's the biggest load of twonk that I've ever read. There is no chance that is what happened, because the line is structured in such a way as to portray his desperation.
Great Drummer, no one pays any attention to the guy really great grooves, coming from a drummer. Nice use of the sub kick too on his bass drum
His voice was really exceptional back then but I think it’s great they still perform to this day
I love the live performance much more than their studio recording. I saw this one on TV a few weeks ago, and was literally mesmerizing and kept my breath.
What a beautiful tune!
This song gave me life in 2009 and still does!
Just a brilliant song .. and yes we all sang songs many years ago that probably 'disrespected' Religion x
I'm a christian but also know that praying to a god that he does not believe in for this song actually means the god of love "aphrodites" which is the original translation.
Lindos canta com o coração ❤️
Man, over 4 years and it can still be hard listening to this band without thinking of my ex on occasion. This song hits so different
Love ya
I like his voice very much! Very unique!
I like the singing. Oh well. And this song makes me cry because it is so heartfelt.
He sings with his heart, this is just amazing
fav band ❤
He gave it to us! I loved it. Perform that song Script!
I love this band! 😅
love this song!!!
@bigsexyblondiedreads you're right, I didn't consider that perspective but I compare their performance with many other singers/bands who really perform in a great way on live too. every band who tours a lot has got this "problem"!
Admit it, the best part start at 1:07
OMG these guys are so awesome!!
I love this song!
dude hes still incredible, you dont hear a voice like tht often
He's a great singer and people need to stop saying harsh things about him.
About the God topic I think what he really is trying to say it when you have been thru really tough times and you don't feel there's anybody else looking after you and you have doubts but you still believe in him even though the circumstances.
I think that The script is one of the very few bands and/or singers that doesn't use auto tune. :) Which is amazing.
Dit is echt goed gezongen ! Ook echt heel zuiver, in alle hoge stukken ! Goed gedaan The Script :)
i simply enjoy this great song regardless of the fact that he believes in God or not, when i sing i change it to 'praying to a God that i do believe in' no need for a controversy here, just enjoy this great song :)

@VirtualInsanity Now way do they really? That's ridiculous!!! Where are these stations???
I agree with you on the term "Oh my God" and the celebration of Christmas, but how does that relate to this argument? It's pretty clear what he means, surely?

love the song:)
his hands movments are funny ha

Religion is a personal choice. You believing does not mean others should too. That's respect. Besides, let's not waste a great song playin'!!!!
Many people who don't believe in god say "Oh my God" and celebrate Christmas too. We have no idea if he meant anything deep or not.
He's not saying there is no god but that his pain has caused him to start believing in God. If there's Evil Pain, there has to be Good to counteract it.

His voice is different from other bands, that's what I like bout them
@7AlexFord Chances are he was just trying to think of something that rhymed and didn't mean anything deep at all.
@laskecup123 Does it make people worse if they don't believe in your god? Also I'm quite sure that you ''unfortunately'' can't change the lyrics :/
why are people arguing about god when there's an amazing song to be heard?!
I love them. :) Though Danny sometimes did'nt hit the high notes. But THEY ARE SO AMAZING. :))))
cool cool
all of them can sing!
Danny and Marc are the best!
@toxic2k7 I'm sorry if I've hurted your feelings, I'm just saying that his voice is not as good as I thought after listening to their songs.. just relax man ;)
I only meant, people do not always say exactly what they mean.
Remember, you dont believe in God; There is no angels for you. How do you know what an angel sounds like if you Don't believe.
@nickftm why were you lookin there?:L ahaha
I would say that this song is really difficult too, but just because the performance isn't the same as the track on the cd doesn't mean it is a bad job. 1:18 Drum fill....WOWEE!
I hate how mother f'ing true this damn song is!
Listen to him do it in Aviva, his best by far
aww makes me proud 2 be irish
@MichaelJacksonNorway Same!!!
@TheThingCosa
But to be fair, it reminds me a bit of Adam Levine of Maroon 5. It's that same nice tenor voice.
@TylerWyrick Yeah, but Adam's voice is more into the rock style :D, I like them both :D
hola
cool :)
@props28 ahaha the best band in the world!!!
Im always singing "Just pray to some god that i dont breakeven", no idea why.
Where did the audience go during this performance?? So use to hearing girls screaming their heads of as soon as they start the opening riff! Lol.
well, see the other side, if you want to comment it... he does not believe but he prays to, it's a paradox... you don't believe cos you were raised like this or it's your choice or whatever..still there are moments when you just speak to someone cos you cannot find a place for yourself and then you say: hey, I don't believe in you and you laught at yourself. Cause you left me with no love, and no love to my name
actually, no gods truly exist, being they were created to explain things and even to put fear into people so they would do the right things. And even if a god or multiple gods existed, you would never know which one.
wooh..his voice is amazingly sexy. gosh!
umm.. can we just listen and enjoy this song?

because there is only one God
He doesnt suck.
I can't understand why you all say that he's amazing.. he does not sound like the album version (THAT is incredible) and it's way under what I expected from your comments.. the band plays in a great way but the singer's voice is barely acceptable.
if you really think they sound better in the studio your wrong cause clearly you haven't seen them live.
He does choke a bit live sometimes. This song is really ahrd to sing, it obviously pushes his range to the limit. Yeah, that piano loud..that's the way i like it.
@UnleashTheVoice
i probs can .... bahahhhhahah probably not..... im just saying..
nice song.. but i like it better in the album than this live performance...
btw, good song :D:D:D
1. They're all Catholics and believe in God. 2. the lyric, danny said HIMSELF, he doesn't like. 3. It actually has to do with the guy feeling so depressed he lost faith in not only his relationship but life. 4.Know what you say before you say it, thanks
I really do like the script and all of their songs. But it's just a bit irritating when danny moves so much in almost all of their live perf.
@tapion1987 lol
Shutup. It's just a lyric, did Danny, Mark, Glen or Ben go off and start athiest riots or something? No. Shutup + enjoy these legends.
@IIxSmgYxII
i probs can.... bahahahaah jokes... i probably can't... im just saying....
i play world of warcraft
That's the biggest load of twonk that I've ever read. There is no chance that is what happened, because the line is structured in such a way as to portray his desperation.
