  • “Among the grassroots, among the MPs the panic about the polls and also about Reform takes hold”.
    The Conservatives are having to "wrestle back" the narrative after poor polling and Nigel Farage take spotlight, says Times Radio political editor Kate McCann.

      @@CumbriaPreachingindividual MPs (the 2019 intake, many of whom aren’t wealthy, didn’t expect to win their seats and don’t have anything lined up for after they lose them again) are probably panicking. The rest know what’s coming and are reconciled to it. This will make the rout that is coming on July 4th less satisfying. But only a bit. It will still feel great. I can’t wait for it.

      They are not panicking, why? Because they will be back in power under the Labour name. Labour will continue on with Tory policies. Nothing will change. Why do you think that so many Tories have defected to Labour? Because they feel at 'home' there.

    They are finally done.
    The problem they have is that since the mid-70s the party’s MPs, members and most of their voters have held two diametrically opposed views. And that hypocrisy has been brutally exposed.
    You simply cannot be pro-business, low regulation and against public spending while simultaneously wanting to conserve the nation. Actual conservatism costs money. If you want good schools and hospitals, low crime and a reduced need to increase the working-age population via immigration, you need to spend money. In order to keep a largely consumption-based, service led economy, growing, you cannot fund those things by taxing average people - you need to tax wealth. And their donors won’t allow them to. So we end up with poor hospitals, crime, badly maintained infrastructure, an army that couldn’t put a single division on to a battlefield etc etc.
    They haven’t conserved anything and so they must be punished.

      Hi tubey, greetings from Germany near Cologne. In our voting system Reform would get a lot of seats. However, this would not be completely positive. Who would agree to a coalition with them? But the real problem would be that they have to give speeches in parliament and the population could judge them much better. Being in the opposition one can propose all crazy things. - wish you all the best -

    • @tubey84
      @tubey84 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @godehardbrysch7905 Hi there - I completely agree; proportional representation allows extreme parties a voice and that's dangerous, even if it's more democratic than our system of first past the post.
      The thing that's dangerous about Reform is that they actually talk a lot of sense on a lot of thing and it effectively disguises the more insane elements of their offering.
      But that's why people will vote for them here - the belief is it's a safe protest vote as they'll never actually have power, and meanwhile it gives the Conservatives a kicking and encourages them to lean right in the future.
