    May I suggest something? After your first cut and rip, when you find the fabric is printed off grain, turn it around and rip the same edge from the opposite selvege. This will save having to do it several more times and causing it to distort more.

    How do you determine where your selvedges should have been if they've been cut off?

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Gay Storm! You can try pulling the edges of the fabric, if it's stretchy that is the bias which goes against the grain. If the fabric is stiff then either side could be the selvedge.

    Thank you. I know I haven't been careful enough in cutting....your tips were very helpful. I would like to see a video of cutting a large piece of fabric, like when I am cutting borders the long way on the fabric and not selvage to selvage. I have been folding the fabric over many times so it will fit on my cutting board and then slicing through all the layers. It isn't working well at all. I end up having to "saw" through all the layers. But when making a border for a queen sized quilt and not wanting to piece the borders, I just don't know how to accurately cut the long strips. If I just cut the whole long strip without doubling it all up, the weight of the fabric pulls it out of shape and I don't get a good cut that way either. Help!!

    • @janetflint8202
      @janetflint8202 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a border print I had to do that to. It was easy as I opened out the whole thing and was able to follow a design on the print with my ruler to keep it straight when cutting, but I haven't done a solid fabric yet. I think if your fabric is square an has a clean cut you could line the bottom edge of your ruler along the clean cut then clean cut your selvage, then fold as you have lining up the selvage clean cut edges, then cut the width you want it should bee good if everything is square and straight. Good luck

    • @stitchinginthebarn8307
      @stitchinginthebarn8307 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You may not be matching the selvedges so you have them parallel with the fold. If you have a lot of space and a big mat it's easier to make sure everything is square. for less space, Meeting the selvedges together, letting the fold hang and observing if there is any kind of wonkyness to it helps. slide the selvedges left or right until the hanging fold looks even. if none of this helps, you may have to cut single layer. Maybe cut your yardage into fat quarters if your pattern allows. If you are working with 2.5 in precuts, some of them are bent to begin with and you have to trim out the folded area.

    • @janetflint8202
      @janetflint8202 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I match the selvage's and hold them while laying it on my ironing board then smooth out the wrinkles on the folded edge with my hands and iron, I never get a boomerang in the middle.

  • @laureneberhard1577
    @laureneberhard1577 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    This lesson is incomplete. You never tell us how to align the fabric so as not to get angles at the fold. My fabric is never that straight at the selvage and fold without a wavy area in the middle. Missed on this one in my opinion

    • @janetflint8202
      @janetflint8202 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's true, when you have those wrinkles on the folded edge you scoot one side of selvage one way or the other till they are gone, and yes it wasn't explained property. Take your fabric, line it up as you have then lay it on your table or ironing board and smooth that wrinkle out with your hands, it should now be straight, works for me. You can also find videos on you tube to show you how.

    • @rosevanguard
      @rosevanguard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a thing with you tube -how to -vlogs, there is always something missing or something that isn't fully explained. I usually watch several different vloggers and piece together instruction on what I need and want. It take time.

  • @dallastaylor5479
    @dallastaylor5479 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    But when the fabric is straight already as in the video it's easy. The hard part is realigning it to get it straight and that's not addressed at all. It would be much more helpful if you had a truly wonky piece of fabric and showed how to realign it so it was straight. Missed this most important part.

  • @denisepineda1788
    @denisepineda1788 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don’t understand why you straighten the edge on the right and then flip the fabric around rather than just cutting on the right. No comprendo

    • @michelestoneking2540
      @michelestoneking2540 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Denise Pineda the straight edge is now on the left and the ruler measurement is on a straight edge. She’s right handed and so cutting is more accurate and easier if you cut on the rh side of the ruler.
