- How to build a tornado shelter made of wood using readily available building products.
This video introduces phase 3: Constructing the Ceiling.
Construction guide available at www.fpl.fs.fed... Produced in collaboration with Home Innovation Research Labs.
GRK RSS Rugged Structural Screws. The best. Those long screws are at least a buck a piece. I would glue all the 2x8s together. Construction adhesive is much more expensive and you're going to be using a lot of tubes. If you screwed the boards together with GRKs it will be much stronger than nails.
Why not run the layers at 90% like cross laminated timber, way stronger.....
Finding straight lumber is going to be a problem. You will have to rip cut to get straight edges. Maybe 8 ft material wont be too bad. This is an excellent design.
This is how some people make houses now for less plastic waste. They use wood dowels instead of screws though.
Why not build walls using the existing cement walls to anchor to. Save money on material..
I actually plan on doing this. Using a corner of my basement and building the other 2 walls like this video. I’ll anchor a ledger board on the concrete sides for the ceiling to sit on.
.....step one
Don't use wood
Is this even safe? Hope the tornado doesn't start a fire
This shelter will be incredibly strong in the walls. I would build the roof differently though. 2Xs are much stronger standing upright than they are laying on their sides.
@@justinhc123 What cut of lumber would you use?
