Not only was that the greatest call in sports history, the best thing was once it was over, he shut his mouth and allowed the pictures and crowd to tell the story. Just about every other announcer would have filled the time with cliches.

The greatest part of this moment is that, unlike so many babbling, self-absorbed commentators these days, Al Michaels understood something very important: when to say nothing and just let the pictures speak for themselves. Good for him.

Al Michaels has to be the greatest play-by-play announcer ever.

I remember this like it was yesterday. The country had been down for years. Inflation was high. The months long Iranian hostage crisis had a daily countdown in the papers. Things were tough all over. Then came this amazing accomplishment by the US Hockey Team. It rallied a nation that felt helpless and was tired of politics. People responded to the "Miracle" call because they needed to believe that things like that were possible.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES? YES! That made Al Michaels famous.

That call brings Chills after all these years. Couple of days ago former Olympian bob suter with the 1980 miracle on ice team (also former Wisconsin badger player) has passed r.i.p.

Reading Michaels book...... really a good read and brought me to this vid. As a hockey fan, I remember the game and moments and they still give me chills.. Recommend the book highly. .. titled "You can't make this stuff up... miracles and memories."

One of the greatest, if not the greatest call in sports history. Only thing close to this for me as a NY Ranger fan was Howie Roses' call on Stephan Matteu's goal in OT vs the Devils in game 7 of the conference finals in 94' Put it as the message on my answering machine :p
