Something interesting that a lot of people don’t get due to lack of context: the wolf walkers are fairly explicitly meant to represent Irish Travellers, an ethnic group in Ireland that diverged from the sedentary population after being displaced by British settlers. The caravan they’re travelling in at the end of the movie is even a traditional Traveller caravan.
@@bdariamihaela I being a local don't really know what is of tourist value but the cathedral is pretty and kitlers inn does great food, the streets themselves are great for aesthetic and picture taking in places. The Breadwinner was actually the first of their movies I saw. I stumbled onto it completely at random on a flight to Japan for a school trip. I was very glad I had 10 more hours to unpack and sleep off my emotions after I got to the end because DAMN.
I have wached the Breadwinner three years ago and it broke me but I also love it. Only a few days ago I found the stengh to wach it again, after three years
Honestly we read Breadwinner as part of a school assignment back in the late 2000s and I really enjoyed its themes as a thinking topic. When I saw a movie by the same name I was instantly curious and watched as soon as I got the chance. No regrets, the memories of every little word from the book came back. I got to see this story once again now portrayed with a lovely art style.
You know, I'm nnot 100% sure. It felt like things were fairly similar but I haven't read the book in well over a decade and a half. I do want to get ahold of another copy and rewatch the movie to see what stuff got left out.
@@bdariamihaela they mean that the books are good and they (i as well) have faith that the studio will be able to make the film just as good as the books are. @@grillythestargazer2750 Thanks. Yes it is very hard to make a film as good as the book, very few manage to do it, but if Cartoon Saloon can't do that than no other studio can
@@bdariamihaela agreed. They don’t have corporate greed, or anything really stoping them creatively. And I do hope for a nice adaptation of that beautiful book.
Generally I would be worried, but I do feel like this is a studio that can do a good adaptation. Tbh I don't like the character design of Elmer in the sneak peek, but I think it'll still be great.
Of these I've watched Song of the Sea and The Breadwinner, though the other two are available to me. God I loved Song of the Sea. I watched it when I was eleven years old, it was a Tuesday and I had missed my school bus that morning. Because the next day was the start of a week of vacation, my parents allowed me to stay home, so I went on a movie marathon. It was the first or second one I watched, and to be frank, I was not expecting much. It felt life-changing. I watched Th Breadwinner about a year later, maybe less, once at home, another during English class. It was certainly very raw. Like you said, only watch this if you feel ready mentally.
Little detail on the “magic in the mundane” thing, that’s one of the things that separates Irish folklore from a lot of mythologies (mostly down to Catholicism trying to remove as much of the old religion by reframing deities and such) but it’s a big part of what a lot of people find special about Irish mythology (as am I, even if I feel our education mainly focused on the least interesting parts and just ignores it after primary to maybe focus on Rome and Greece). As for the studio, I’ve known about them since Breadwinner came out when I was in Primary, but have only ever seen one of their short films. I love their style so I’m gonna have to watch some of these no matter what.
In eighth grade my English teacher had us all read the bread winner book and then the movie. I myself didn’t cry but I can agree that it’s very sad and covers sensitive topics
I remember watching song of the sea as child their are scenes that still stick out to me today but i never could remember the name of the movie or the company. Thank you for the video on these wonderful movies, I am most certainly going to be watching them again now.
I love the breadwinner, personally it didn't feel like the one watch type thing for me I rewatched it multiple time I think it and Wolfwalkers are my fav Cartoon Saloon movies

You made me vibrate, you say it very well, I cried many times because of the movie Wolfwalkers, I really like it, I saw it many times in English, I'm Spanish, it has a very simple script but it delves into the artistic aspects and uses several techniques that give it a 3D touch. It was a lot of effort for Cartoon Saloon, someone told me that Tomm More in an unofficial interview said that they were going to make the 2nd part of Wolfwalkers in America...Take care, greetings
I own both Secret of Kells & Song of the Sea & discovered them both thru humble means as a kid. Both thru my local library in their kid's DVD section & Song of the Sea also throught an art exhibit at that library done by a now family friend of mine who does sculpting/painting. I was enthralled by Ashling, the forest, the faeries in Derry & the Gaelic song by the mom. Also discovered the Breadwinner thru that DVD section & have watched it 3x. It is hard to watch but feels rewarding, eye-opening & educational. Plus the crisp animation is gorgeous compared to some of the others. Never heard of the Wolf girl film nor the upcoming Netflix show
FINNALY someone acknowledged so much of the movie song of the sea the movie it’s beautiful and it isn’t seen much by many but it’s not underrated i just wish more of the beautiful movies from the old times were seen by this generation because mostly it’s “oh but they’re old the new ones are better” like no they can be still beautiful in their way and we NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE that. Thank you ❤
I love Cartoon Saloon after I'm watching Song of the Sea because everything just like this video says, the music even give me nostalgia after listening again during the pandemic in 2020
You know their animations are so stereotypically Irish I was surprised to hear they were actually based in Ireland. But it does explain alot about the stories in the films of theirs I've heard of.
I wonder if people are going to do "Sentencing Cartoon Saloon Villains for their Crimes" like a Wicked Binge take on Villains from movies such as Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner, Wolfwalkers, and My Father's Dragon.
My favorite is The Secret of Kells but the others are great too. I wouldn't say Wolfwalkers was their best work, but still good. I seriously doubt My Father's Dragon is good after seeing the trailer🤢
Cartoon Saloon released a DVD set of all three of it's Irish mythology inspired films, which is the only way to get a physical copy of Wolfwalkers. Song of the Sea and the Secret of Kells are both available on DVD separately. You can watch Wolfwalkers on Apple TV.
My interest is peaked :-) im partly irish, partly english and i have no connection to that culture. I'm so interested at looking into the culture of Ireland's original inhabitants, but i Dunno, I've just never found the time. Are these on a reasonable streaming platform?
I don't think the movies are a trilogy? Like the only connection is that it's about Irish Mythology but like thats it really? Or do the ppl at Cartoon Saloon refer to them as a trilogy?
They're referred to by Cartoon Saloon as the Irish Folklore Trilogy, yes - In fact, that's the name used for the box set of the three movies, as seen on both the box itself and on Cartoon Saloon's store! They're more of a thematic trilogy than direct sequels (If you play games, think something along the lines of the Final Fantasy series; there's shared ideas between the titles in the series, but aside from a few exceptions generally not direct sequels continuing one overarching narrative), though there are also little nods in Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers to their predecessors: Aisling appears as a cameo in Song of the Sea on a bus taken by the protagonists, and both the Eye of Colm Cille from The Secret of Kells and the shell flute from Song of the Sea make appearances in Wolfwalkers! They're there more as easter eggs than any direct connections between the films, but I figured it was worth noting :0
Secret of Kells I loved at first but the eyeroll moment for me was early in the film when he first meets Aisling he recognizes what she is and accepts it then later in the film when they're at the entrance to lair of the "Dark One" he completely ignores and brushes off her warnings about the entity living inside as "Pagan Nonsense". Like bro? Wut? She's a literal Faerie, a being of the Old Pagan World. You had no problem accepting that the ENTIRE movie but suddenly this bothers you? That made absolutely NO SENSE and ruined the rest of film from that point on for me.
