Protecting grass abused by one from abuse by the other doesn't sound like making sense to me. Is it to let the turf recover between games? Do they interleave soccer and football games like after a soccer game, the next game is football on the other turf and after that there is a soccer game on the now recovered turf?
So the footballers played on Hybrid Grass (GrassMaster) but the NFL players had to play on Field Turf. NFL players hate this because it's a lot harder than grass and is suspected to cause more injury.
So basically they turned a football field into a football field.

Loads of NFL stadiums use Field turf. It's better than what they used to use... the old Astroturf.
