I'm a web designer thinking of getting into SEO copywriting. I think having a custom domain is crucial for any website to look legit and trusted by visitors and Google. WordPress has its learning curve, but it is one of the best options for blogging sites. Especially if you want to add any e-commerce functions like selling templates and planners.
