  • You may want to changes in network profile of your windows 10 PC to make it discover able to others or not. I have listed down 4 methods in this tutorial. Basis your comfort you may choose upon any one and do the needful.
When you make change in your windows 10 network location, you will notice that by default it is set to public, which is most restrictive, to share folders and drives, you will need to make this change to private.
Summary of methods explained in this is given below:
Forget password under manage known networks- When you enter your wifi password, it asks you whether you want to make your PC discoverable to other systems in the network or not. If you choose yes - it means network selected is private and if you choose no - network selection is public.
Second method that is discussed here is about doing doing toggle between making your PC discover able or not. This can be done in both the cases - when your PC is connected with LAN and when it is connected with WiFi.
    Steps are simple to follow..
Go to settings from start menu - then left click on wifi router icon you see- you will notice a toggle bar that says- make your PC discoverable or not. Do the relevant change and proceed.
For some reason if this does not work, you will need to go to run window on your windows 10 system, type netplwiz there, check that you have chosen administrator there, steps in this explain guide on how to troubleshoot. Restart the system is it does not help.
    3. Make changes in registry: You need to follow thiese steps .. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -SOFTWARE - Microsoft -Windows NT - CurrentVersion -NetworkList - Profiles, makes changes in category between 0 and 1, relevant changes will be made in changing the current profile of network between private and public.
    4. Local security policy: This method works on windows 10 pro version, follow this method if you are a professional user of windows 10.
While explaining one method would have also been ok but i thought to share multiple methods, so if you get stuck somewhere you can switch and do the needful in switching between current profile by following other method.

Wooo! This is a comprehensive down deep explanation on public/private network settings. If is doesn't solve your problem, you will at minimum learn a bit about the various settings for public private settings in Windows 10 Pro

Harish, gotta say, thorough job of showing the different ways to do this changing, best I've seen, too. Some instructions have users traveling in a circle back to the start and accomplishing nothing, but you were very clear precise, and thanks a lot, really commendable.

Thank you so much! The last method worked for me! However, it came back to public when I rebooted. Now I understand what happened. My Anti-virus software, AVAST, made network public in its firewall setting. When I changed to private in AVAST, my PC became normal. Phew~

Thank you very much for the help I don't know why Microsoft make the settings so hard for users to work out. I had to watch till 6 minutes into your video because the normal way of changing it wouldn't work I just don't know why they do this.

The reason Microsoft does this is because they fired all their experts (am thinking it was around the end of 2014). They did this in order to keep their bank accounts full and then hired lots of people who have no idea at all about Windows!! They in essence kicked their "loyal customers" to the curb, forcing Windows 10 on every op to date. This is why they will not offer any more operating systems, all the people they hired for the job are simply winging it. Windows 10 is their last operating system. It's clear as a bell, just go to any of their support pages, you'll find all the help customers receive are from Microsoft's customers, not Microsoft support techs, they trip all over themselves!
      Ding dong(s) 😡🤬

Great tips! what do you do if none of those changes hold? ie changing the category value in Regedit, when the user is set as Admin? we have a new router and it wants to stay in Public mode, it seems. I dont know why when it is for home use. nothing I try to do is working. if I can change the network, it only holds for a few seconds or minutes and then when I change screens or try to reboot to fully implement any changes, I find anything has gone back to how it was, in this case, that means my Wifi is set back to Public. thank you so much

Great video, but I tried all the methods and still ny network is Public. However. I read in a comment, that a user found the solution in the Avast antivirus program. I then checked my ESET antivirus program and it has taken control of my Firewall and WIFI settings. I have no way to change this but I have sent a mail to the ESET company with lots of screen shots. So thank you for this very thorough explanation. One question. You start off by saying that Public is more restricted. Does that mean that Private is not as safe?

Find and go to your "Network Status" then click on "Change connection properties" and change from public to private.

I am running a new pc on windows 10 which is now in my local private network with 2 other computers but I am unable to see a user called 'Public' as on my other computers, one running Windows 10 and the other 7. Do you have any thoughts on how to show user 'Public'? Any suggestions would be most helpful. many thanks, Bryan

Seriously? Several methods were shown and frankly his is the best I've seen in changing the two positions privare to public and vice versa. Try from the start, unless your machine has a program preventing these actions, one should work,
