    The Peruvian Apple Cactus is a Desert Dessert! This slightly sweet and refreshing fruit is an easy to grow desert cactus that will survive without watering in zones 9 - 11. Here in Yuma Arizona this cactus has survived temperatures up to 125 degrees F in full sun! You can create a protective food hedge with this plant. I have seen this plant grow to a height of 20 feet tall in some places, but most people trim them to 8 foot maximum. You can cut a cactus branch into several pieces and stick them in the ground to root and viola you have cloned cactus.
    Please ask me questions!
    Cereus Peruvianus, Night Blooming Cereus, Cereus repandus, giant club cactus, hedge cactus, cadushi, and kayush are some other names this cactus goes by.
    The large, cream-colored, nocturnal flowers remain open for only one night. The fruits, known locally as pitaya, olala, or Peruvian apple, are thornless and vary in skin color from violet-red to yellow. The edible flesh is white and contains small, edible, crunchy seeds. The flesh sweetens as the fruit opens out fully.

    I love these. I have more than 1 variety to ensure fruit pollination. They love water more than the usual cactus(according to soil dampness level)

      I don't know. I imagine you could eat the immature portions, but anything else would be pretty fibrous. I personally would not attempt to eat it. It is too good at making edible fruit.

      I had a few in pots for a while then I moved and planted one and it started doing very well after a couple years. Before it just flowered but I moved closer to the mountains and we get bats. I looked up that bats pollinate them bc the flowers only bloom at night. I also occasionally fertilize with epsom salt and water 1/4 tsp of ES to 1qt of water spray bottle only. This is literally the only thing I have ever gotten to grow and tbh I have no idea why I’m getting fruit but I Hope that helps.

    I started planting 4 pcs this week. Is it self pollinating?

    • @ProfessionalPepper
      @ProfessionalPepper  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is self pollinating, but it helps if you have multiple flowers open next to eachother. You can hand pollinate if you dont have many pollinators around.

      Maryland Dragonfruit Gardens yes it is. My plant is growing in southern Ca. It produced so many flowers this summer possibly from all the rain in 2018 in my area. Flowers bloom only at night and for one night. The bees will be busy until the flowers close.

    Regarding a Peruvian Apple Cactus. I have one multi-branched specimen that does flower but has not set fruit as I only have the one. Would removing a branch and potting it create another plant that would be able to fertilize the mother plant?

    • @ProfessionalPepper
      @ProfessionalPepper  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good question. I do not know if they can self pollinate, since it will be the same plant in 2 locations.

    • @ProfessionalPepper
      @ProfessionalPepper  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After some research, I suggest you purchase another cactus from another source as they require cross pollination. I found this:
      www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/proceedings1993/V2-486.html#Pollination
      "The compatibility system of various individual plants was tested by comparing fruit set with cross, self, and open pollinations in summer 1991 at the Besor orchard and at Beer-Sheva. Flowers that were covered with bags before anthesis and were hand-self-pollinated did not set fruit (Table 2). This suggests that C. peruvianus is self-incompatible. Hand-cross-pollination led to 100% fruit set. Open-pollinated flowers set fruit at Besor but not at Beer-Sheva (Table 2). Fruits from hand-cross-pollinations were heavier and had a higher pulp to peel ratio than fruits which derived from open-pollinated flowers. They also had more seeds/g pulp tissue and the seed number was positively correlated to the pulp weight. Open-pollination did not lead to optimal fruit development compared to experimental cross-pollination. These results indicate that it is necessary to plant two or more different clones in close proximity and which flower over the same time period. One reason for the low fruit set of some seedlings in open pollination might be a lack of other flowering plants in the vicinity."

      Fertilize it. I accidentally used a bag of fertilizer instead of soil next to it for another plant and it produced fruit for the first time that year. They were gifted to me and I didn’t know they bore fruit. I didn’t eat them because I was afraid. This year I can’t wait for them to grow so I can try them.

    Hate to tell you but that fruit is a little over ripe and you need to eat it as soon as you can right after you harvest it because there’s no preservatives trust me it taste a whole lot better And it kind of defeats the purpose of the phrase fresh fruit after three days might as well went to the grocery store

    • @ProfessionalPepper

      I agree it is best to eat it ASAP, but it was hard to find a quiet moment in my home to film. I've had several straight off the cacti and there was little difference in flavor by keeping it in the fridge for 2 days.
