Good video. I have several of these and I absolutely love them. 30' is very short, as they have been known to grow to 130 feet tall so be aware of that. They are in fact the world's tallest cactus.
Thank you! I agree they can get taller, but those kind of heights require trellising. Have you had any plants grow over 30 ft without a trellis?
No I haven't but the mother of the plants that I have are over 50 feet tall and they are still young. To attain tall growth leave the suckers and they will become self supporting and can grow to 100 feet plus. On large properties this is practical but for growth in pots, not so much. Here in the Caribbean they grow in clusters on rocky mountain tops and are majestic and beautiful especially when they are full of fruit😊.

You’re correct, it will grow additional “arms” from the edges of where the cut was made.

Hi! Thanx for the video love it 🌵!! I want one of these but im at 4,500ft elevation and we get freezes 🥶 and snow ❄️🌨️ will it die in these conditions? I want to get something that can resist this and that i won't have to worry about covering in winter
Hello! Thanks for the question. Man, you’ve got a difficult set of growing conditions! As far as freezes go, we have had some freezes into the twenties which have not killed off my plants (or my neighbors). Zone 8-11 is what the plant is rated to be hardy for, but I understand that in the low teens is where the plant will start to freeze. As far as the elevation goes, I’ve only seen confirmation of growth at 1000ft. For reference I’m at about 45ft. I’m not sure about how quickly/well they would grow with the oxygen deprivation, but they are a pretty resilient plant.
With all of that said, people have grown these successfully in pots. You would need to move them to be protected during winter.

Is there a certain spot where I should cut them, such as where they look like they have joints, or can I just cut them anywhere? What began as an itty bitty 4 inch cactus is now taller than my house and I have to trim it so I can bring it in for the winter.
You can cut them to the length that you prefer. Just make sure to let them callous over before planting the cutting.
I have a Peruvian apple cactus and its a bit over 12ft tall. I love the blooms and I've tried the fruit, though I leave them attached for the birds to eat.

@@CelestialHarvest I'm in Las Vegas, Nevada. The cactus was here when I bought my home and it's grown a few feet in the past 4 years. The last 2 years I've had a lot of bees around it and the cactus had triple the blooms and fruit!!

@@mondayloux255912 ft is wild. Do you build any support to prepare for windy/stormy days? I have one that's like 3 feet and I'm always worried I'll wake up one morning to it knocked over.
@@dabalishis1585 So far I haven't had any problems during windy days, even when it's 50mph+ . It does move a little, but not bad and it's up against my house next to another tree. I've read and heard people say the tree can reach heights of 30ft.

Hi, the seeds are inside the fruit. If you’re able to get a cutting, it’s a much faster process to grow!

Hi! These actually aren’t seedlings, but cuttings. We usually cut back the parent plant in fall where I live and then root the cuttings. I’m not sure I understand the time frame you are suggesting they should be planted. Could you tell me more? Thanks
Make a video on how you know your going to produce fruit and what to look for and how it look before and after. I never see videos like that.

Hi! The video shows the fruit being removed at about 3:30 right before it went into the ground. You should remove the fruit to allow the plant’s energy to go toward making roots. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Your propagation method for this plant is really poor
This has been a very successful method for me. In fact, I haven’t lost a cutting to date. What is your preferred method of propagation? I’m sure others would love to hear additional successful methods!
@@CelestialHarvest I hear you, you are probably also in a area where you cannot propagate directly into soil? Not sure? Issue with paper towel for me is that you sprout very long thin seedlings because the lack of sunshine and nutrients with germination. For me it is all about programming the seed when germinating, when doing this in a very nice and very wet environment it could stimulate the seedling in thinking it hit the lottery in terms of where it germinated, these seedlings tend to suffer a bit when transplanting then later. I like to prepare a small bowl with coarse soil and a little bit of compost. I would then soak the soil thoroughly then plant the seeds just below the surface. I would then put the pot into a freezer back and poke a small hole into the bag for some oxygen. I put my pot outside where it can have some morning sun and within 7 days you will have sprouts. After say 7 - 8 days I will remove the freezer bag and have the seedlings grow in that container for at least one more year before transplanting to bigger containers. I have success in this way and seedlings also tend to be stronger and more adapted to the environment...

Putting seeds in a bag was something I just tried out and it worked, but your method makes a lot of sense for growing strong plants. I’ll test it out with my next batch of seeds. Have a great day!
