It's weird, man. I wonder if 28 years ago your parents thoughts "in 3 decades over 7 thousand people will watch these tapes". Life is so strange. Also your parents talking about the "Earful Tower" was amazing.
For people like me who first visited Disney World in the 70s, the "Now Is The Time" version of Carousel Of Progress remains the superior version of the program to the lame version that has played since 1994. Yes, the current version did bring back the original World's Fair and Disneyland song, but it also dumbed down the script into something totally at odds with the theme of the attraction (and I also do not like Jean Shepherd's voicing a now doofus father after years of the intelligence of Andrew Duggan).
It also reflected the attitude of the 1970's, in that the present was as good as it was going to get, and that the future was all downhill from there. "The next five years are going to be worse than the last five years." What kid of message is THAT for a ride based around Progress? The classic song highlights the possibilities for the future, that tomorrow will be a little brighter than today. It's a far more optimistic song, and therefore superior.
So much fun seeing WDW the way it was when my kids were little! I still go every 2 years or so, but now it's without kids. I always miss my kids being small when I'm in WDW. I enjoy myself anyway, but there's nothing like seeing it from your kids' eyes. Thanks for the memories!
This is my jam! We got a family trip to Disney World from Santa for Christmas 1989, went back to school one day after Christmas break, and did the trip that week in January 1990. One of my biggest memories is seeing the huge sign announcing the opening of MGM Studios in four months. I was obsessed with the world of movie behind-the-scenes and felt terrifically ripped off. I wouldn't return to the WDW Magic Kingdom until March 2015, and wouldn't see the Studios park until a trip with my wife this past September. Doing a Deluxe trip for my birthday this year right after thanksgiving.
I absolutely LOVED this idea, you have the best disney videos ever, Rob. Really fun to watch and keep that disney magic alive. Keep up the great work! ♥️
I was 2 years old in 1988 when I went to Disney World. I actually remember that bee presentation! It was the first time I ever saw a blue screen. I wanted to try it, but I wouldn't get that chance until I went to Sesame Place a few years later.
It's interesting to see what Walt Disney world was like in the year I was born. I wouldn't make my first trip to WDW until 7 years later, in 1997. I remember the Animal Kingdom was still under construction at the time, and being really disappointed that it wasn't open yet for us to go and visit.
I was there in 1989. It's been a long time since I've seen the tapes, and I don't actually remember much from being there, but I think my dad got parts of: that same indoor Mickey show, the backlot tour (including Catastrophe Canyon), the Honey I Shrunk the Kids effects show, Captain EO, Listen to the Land, and Universe of Energy.
At least now I know I wasn’t the only kid wearing those knee high striped socks back then. 😂 I still have our Disney World vacation on tape from 1988. That was, I think, the apex of Disney imagination and imagineering at WDW.
i noticed the same thing on our tape from 1990 when i was 5 - heavy on shows. in addition to the reasons you speculated (more shows in the parks, our parents gravitating to them on account of having young children), i'll add that the size of the cameras back then probably had some effect. it's easier to just post up at a show than to whip that bad boy out during peter pan's flight. also, hi rob, great channel you have here :)
GREAT video!! My first trip was '87 - we definitely remember all the stage shows (& we even sometimes got picked to be onstage for some). The emphasis used to be on "behind-the-scenes" and not rides so that has definitely changed. I love rides but all the different looks at how things were made are (IMHO) what set Disney apart from just a typical amusement park, including Universal. Thanks for sharing! I gotta go through all our tapes now!! :-)
Hey, Rob. I was in WDW in 1985, when I was 14 to 15 yo, when there was still Snow White Adventures, no Splash Mountain and many other differences. I think you might be right when you say there's a bunch of live shows in your parents' video because you were too small a kid. I say that because I don't remember watching any shows, with the exception of the Electric Parade and some show that might be happening while we were passing by. I specifically put pressure on the family to go to rides, not shows or parades, you know, being fourteen yo and all, and there was a lot to do, many rides to go to. Thanks for keeping this awesome channel! I just watched your hangout with the Defunctland guy and that other dude. I laughed a lot. =)
hahaha 1989 I was 6 and I think I was down there that year myself but doubt I have home videos. But all in all wonderful trip down memory lane. Thank you Rob I've learned so much from your videos I have shared them with all my friends and family.
Aw I love this! That backlot tour looks like a great time, I especially love the Siskel and Ebert review bit! I'd love to see any and all character interactions if you have any from past home videos, especially the early stages of the Ariel meet and greets!
You have so much great ideas. I wish when we were recording stuff back then we had more in mind that in the future people may wants to see how things have changed. Most of the people records things to show people which is good but recording like your father did if a gold nugget!
This was great! Do you think you could upload more but maybe with a voiceover of you narrating what we're seeing in each scene, or things we should be paying attention to, like things that maybe aren't there anymore?
What time of year was this? I was there in 1989 (5 yo). Don’t remember much but I’ve been back many times since in the 00’s all the way from the UK. Love your channel
my first trip was in 89 also. Its one that's forever etched in my memory and I'll admit this did bring a slight tear to my eye. Thank you Rob and keep up the good work
I went with my parents and little brother in Aug 1989. I was 12. We have a few pictures left, but we didn't have a video camera. I'd give anything to have had some video footage. I'm returning for the first time next week with my wife and 2 boys. Scanning the crowds for just a glimpse of us.
Very cool ! Ive been going to WDW since 1977, so its cool to see old videos from back then. I wish I was into filming back then. What cool stuff I could have saved . Thanks for sharing.....Rhino
+Jayden Cool Nope! It's a common misconception that the design was made with the intent for a monorail to pass through it like the Contemporary, but it was never actually planned.
I did go in 1989 with my brother and family i was like 6 and star wars was really popular we did a lil movie called shane together i held a rubber chicken and said get outta town shane wish i had video still or new the other kids who did it too
Rob.. Love the video.. But depressing..I remember when it was Disney mgm studios. And Disney killed the whole concept of that park. Miss the studio backlit your and the new you're Street and the whole theme of it being a working studio where movies and commercial were filmed. Now it's just another amusement park that has very few rides--star wars land two rides... To story land two new tires-- and overpriced resteraunts and gift shops. Disney definitely didn't make the studios any better.
I don't disagree with the theme going away, but I'd almost argue that it died a natural death. Back in '89 that prospect of seeing how films were made was novel and exciting and out of the ordinary. It even lasted into the '90s. But with the advent of DVDs and the addition of more and more behind-the-scenes features, we started to get a normal flow of that kind of content. Today with social media, the making of the film is as much a part of the marketing push as the trailers and everything else. So I think we're just at a point where there's nothing exciting or fresh about seeing how films are made. We're exposed to it regularly. However what we are finding new and exciting now is this total immersion into the films themselves, which is what I believe lands like the two Harry Potter lands at Universal, Pandora, and now Galaxy's Edge offers. I think that'll be the new trend into the future. Not seeing how your favorite films are made, but living in them.
God, Disney live shows have always been dreadful. They're no better today. Even as kids, we hated them. I think we tried watching 2 of them in the 80s. And, even at 10 and 7, my sister and I were whining, "Laaaaaaaame. Let's go."
5:35 it's so sad how much this speech is wrong today back then it was true to an extent now it's wrong... This just reminds me of all the good things from the 80's and early 90's... Macguyver and other things... How much has changed from the 80s were voicing your opinion in the wrong part of town equals your head bashed in and you getting attacked and smeared by anyone and everyone.
I mean, unfortunately that's how it was for many minorities in the deep south for decades and decades. Rose tinted glasses makes everything look nice in hindsight, but America wasn't the ideal it claimed to be for a large part of the country, and still isn't. I hope we get there one day, but it'll require rejecting bigotry and racism, and lifting up everyone as a society rather than just the select lucky few. I believe it can happen one day.
It's weird, man. I wonder if 28 years ago your parents thoughts "in 3 decades over 7 thousand people will watch these tapes". Life is so strange.
Also your parents talking about the "Earful Tower" was amazing.
"America, where you can walk outside your door anytime you want to. Where you can greet a stranger and not be afraid" lol
Omg lol. I thought the same thing! Oh different times.
Ugh that song for carousel of progress was BRUTAL!!!!
I didn't even know that version existed!
I agree. It was the first version that I now have in my head.....lol . Its what was playing my first trip to WDW in 1977.
Jacob Schmidt umm I don't think so. That was the best song that ride ever had
It also reflected the attitude of the 1970's, in that the present was as good as it was going to get, and that the future was all downhill from there. "The next five years are going to be worse than the last five years."
What kid of message is THAT for a ride based around Progress?
The classic song highlights the possibilities for the future, that tomorrow will be a little brighter than today. It's a far more optimistic song, and therefore superior.
1989 was the first year I went so this is AWESOME for me!!! So many memories!!
I've never seen a Roger Rabbit costume in Disney world before:D
Roger Rabbit was very big in Disney MGM Studios in 1989 and the early 90s. Very little trace now...
Is there a legal reason RR doesn't get much love by Disney ? Despite having said ride in toon town?
So much fun seeing WDW the way it was when my kids were little! I still go every 2 years or so, but now it's without kids. I always miss my kids being small when I'm in WDW. I enjoy myself anyway, but there's nothing like seeing it from your kids' eyes. Thanks for the memories!

+The Sean Ward Show Nice! Hope you have an awesome trip! The parks are really wonderful during the holiday season.
? mgm studios opened may 1st 1989?
Wow, that stage show with "Rhythm Is Gonna Getcha" and Roger Rabbit may be the most 1989 thing ever.
Hahaha----totally!!
All you need is Manuel Noriega hiding in the background.
Strange coincidence: Noriega just died.
Very weird. I should hold off on the name dropping for a while.
I'm so envious that you grew up going to Disney almost every year.
That's me right now, except we go from Minnesota to Disney World in Florida every year.
TuneBoy At least you live somewhat close to Florida, we live on the west coast, that's an 8 hour flight to Orlando!
That comment about subways killed me bc the Disney World Monorail in 1989 probably still had more modern internals than New York subways today
I absolutely LOVED this idea, you have the best disney videos ever, Rob. Really fun to watch and keep that disney magic alive. Keep up the great work! ♥️
Why thank you! It was a lot of fun getting to share some old school Disney experiences!
I was 2 years old in 1988 when I went to Disney World. I actually remember that bee presentation! It was the first time I ever saw a blue screen. I wanted to try it, but I wouldn't get that chance until I went to Sesame Place a few years later.

I worked in the Magic Kingdom from 88-90. This is cool to see. Its changed so much! Thank you for posting this.
I was there in 1989. The 80's,my favorite era of any media (besides gaming)
That monorail operator was *not* happy xD
At least now I know I wasn’t the only kid wearing those knee high striped socks back then. 😂 I still have our Disney World vacation on tape from 1988. That was, I think, the apex of Disney imagination and imagineering at WDW.

also, hi rob, great channel you have here :)

Love your channel, and this retro series is dope af!
Thanks!

Very strange viewing - I was there at exactly the time this video was shot! What is missing is the daily thunderstorm at 3:25 like clockwork!
Yes, b4 ponchos cost ten dollars, or whatever they are now.
Thank you Rob and keep up the good work
Thanks so much for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some good memories!
the 80's- 90's will probably go down as the peak Disney World years.
Crazy seeing maintenance crack open that monorail A/C panel with guests on board!
I went with my parents and little brother in Aug 1989. I was 12. We have a few pictures left, but we didn't have a video camera. I'd give anything to have had some video footage. I'm returning for the first time next week with my wife and 2 boys. Scanning the crowds for just a glimpse of us.
Wow, it's so weird seeing the Carrousel of Progress before the way it is now!
13:38 Roger Ebert & Siskel signed to do this?!
This is fantastic! Really brought me back to going there in 1990.
Very cool ! Ive been going to WDW since 1977, so its cool to see old videos from back then. I wish I was into filming back then. What cool stuff I could have saved . Thanks for sharing.....Rhino
Great video, I went in July of 89. Brought back a lot of memories.
That repair man on Monorail was quite patient, must be used to being taped from 2 and a half feet by strangers, lol.
I really loved Dreamflight! I miss both that and Timekeeper
Rob!!!! I remember some of those shoes!!! Thank you so much for the trip down memory lane!!
This really makes me want to watch my 92 &95 trips from when I was a kid 👌🏻 bravo Rob keep up the good work
Thanks!
"The Earful Towah". You can tell your mom isn't from Oklahoma. lol
But, in a way, charming. Tks for posting video. And hi to your mom!
I love this!!! I can't wait for more!!!
Also Rob, if you haven't heard yet, Disney Cruise Line is making two more ships to add to its fleet. They will launch in 2021 and 2023.
I’m from the future... no they won’t X-D
Cool that you have footage of Dreamflight in it’s first year.
I was born in august of 89 :) this is so awesome! thanks for posting!
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Love this!
Your family sounds very Italian! LOL
me and my best friend did a mean barber shop quartet version of that "now is the time" carousel of progress song
I was born in june of 89, so this was great to see
brings me back and i am 40 years old
It's cool to see that not what changed what they didn't change
too bad we can't sit in the conductors headquarters of the monorail anymore. :(
Walt Disney World In Florida's Star Tours Is Already At The Magic Kingdom Such As In Tomorrowland
What the ... is that song they're singing on the carousel of Progress?
original song for COP at MK....
Why was Donald so short?
I graduated High School in 1989.
My sister and I got to be the kids on the bee during one trip.
PS. I know its long but its for me and my close friends.
Is There Such Thing As The Disney Version of MGM Stands For Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer?
ROB I was wondering if you know of that the swan and dolphin was gonna have a monorail? It looks like it
+Jayden Cool Nope! It's a common misconception that the design was made with the intent for a monorail to pass through it like the Contemporary, but it was never actually planned.
k
Hey Rob, just to say great vids! But what music do you use? Thanks.
i was in disney in august of 89 as well if the date was correct on the one screen
I love the channel, but I do miss these more informal videos compared to the newer high production value vids
I did go in 1989 with my brother and family i was like 6 and star wars was really popular we did a lil movie called shane together i held a rubber chicken and said get outta town shane wish i had video still or new the other kids who did it too
I remember the 12:00. I have it on tape someplace also
wow this was a few weeks before I was born
Your family sounds incredibly Italian. EDIT: Ah, so your family's from New York (based on that comment about the subway system), are they?
Yup! We're 0% Italian but we are lifelong New Yawkas.
Rob Plays Pretty sweet, honestly my permanent home, no matter where I'm living. Cheers from one NYer to another!
Damn I was 23 in 1989
1:10 IT'S A WEENIE!
Omg Donald was so tiny
How old are you?
+Callum Fletcher I am 20 now
I love Roger Rabbit

Walt Disney..
its Roger Rabbit

Don't care too much for those distracting lines that keep showing up, but otherwise it was a good video.
5:35 it's so sad how much this speech is wrong today back then it was true to an extent now it's wrong...
This just reminds me of all the good things from the 80's and early 90's... Macguyver and other things...

I spent this whole video with a mortified face. I was there in 1989, and I don't remember it being this lame.
