An epic asskicking metal masterpiece that still has relevancy to this day. Such an influence on soooo many metal bands that followed these guys after them.
I was in the 7th grade in '73 & my BF got on the bus one Monday morning & and exclaimed, "You've got to come over after school to hear this album I just got!" Black Sabbath Paranoid. Life changer.
It was really the government that made them change the cover you have to remember that was during the Vietnam War and the government did not want that to be out like that
It had nothing to do with police it has to do with the Vietnam War the government was pressuring them and management to change the title of that album that's why it was changed
The album "Paranoid" was supposed to be called "War Pigs" (hence the swordfighter on the cover), but Warner Bros. (distributor for North America) didn't want such a 'provocative' title with the war in Vietnam and the protests in the USA going on, so the title was changed to "Paranoid" without the Sabbs having a say in it. The song "War Pigs" was originally called "Walpurgis" (a witches celebration) but the title as well as some of the lyrics were changed to get rid of Sabbath being called devil worshippers. In the live version Ozzy seems to have 'forgotten' some of the lines, but he's singing some of the original lyrics.
I had my own apartment with a black ceiling with glo painted stars on it. Black light posters and a wall of album covers. Loved Black Sabbath! AND someone whose name starts with a D sure does look good in black......oh! didi I say that out loud?? Nope!
WELL YOU GUYS I FIRST HEARD THIS ALBUM RIGHT AROUND THE TIME WHEN IT WAS RELEASED IN 1971 AND I WAS 14 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME!! I COULDN'T LISTEN TO IT ENOUGH!! AND NOW OVER 50 YEARS LATER STILL.. IT HITS NOW JUST AS GOOD AS IT HIT THEN!!❤
Damn straight good buddy... I wasn't born till 1973, but I'll say this, as a little kid in the late 1970s an early 1980s I was scared to death of ozzy, but then I became the age of reason... DAMNIT I LOVE BLACK SABBATH... MY GOODNESS... You know what's a shame?? How Rock has died an that was in 1996... As far as mainstream goes, Alice n chains was the last great band... Hell even Gene Simmons said rock died in 90s, he didn't mention alice n chains, but overall yes his right... When white kids took off with rap freaking music, rock n roll had no chance in coming back to life... when rap came out heavy in the late 80s, I recall myself saying, this rap will not last 5 or 10 yrs the most, WRONG... How wrong I was... I thought white kids would have more sense, but I'm embarrassed that they never took on to rock n roll or heavy metal... I'm just stating a fact, call me racist because I don't give a rats ass.. But it doesn't make me racist anyway because I didn't like the beastie boys.. I can say the same thing about blacks not liking rock n roll or heavy metal.. They don't like white music period so what does that say about them... but anyhoot, thank goodness for ROCK N ROLL AND HEAVY METAL...

A forever relevant song and the best anti war song ever for me. They just had 'it' right away, first song, first album and then they follow up with their 2nd album with this song leading it off. Their first 6 albums are like that, classic banger of a tune right away that sets up the rest of their classic tunes . The greatest metal band for sure and in my top 10 bands, no matter the rock genre. Good listening for sure, if you are having a crummy day, just put some Black Sabbath on and your mood Instantly changes. Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
Nice! Dev is right Black Sabbath Week! Love that cross! Momma's coming home!! Mike where is your gold chains, tattoos and leather get with it my man! Loving 5 minute "getting to know you" chatter. "Politicians hide themselves away they only started the war why should they go out to fight they leave that role to the poor, yeah". War, war never changes. "Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah". Dev is totally feeling this work of art! YES. War Pigs is a legendary song!! 8 minutes of glory. Ok Thank You I will have some Cake! Not Bad, Mike. Bill Ward on those drums is just golden! Ozzy is singing an alternate lyrical version of this song. I believe that is why this version was controversial, not sure though. Great Video Peeps!!
Oh yeah! Saw Sabbath for the first time in ‘75 and they opened with this. Was actually my first time hearing it. Didn’t know their whole catalogue at that point. But damn will never forget the power of War Pigs blasting through the arena while a giant silver cross hung over the crowd!… and that ‘70 Paris show, phenomenal, and Bill Wards drumming. Holy crap!!!

@@bernardsalvatore1929 well, if you saw them in Asbury park in ‘75 there’s a fantastic live recording from that show. If you haven’t heard it you must!
I remember when my older brother brought this album home from the record store. I think I listened to it more than he did. It changed my whole outlook on music forever. But I had and have a very eclectic taste in music. I loved Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin but also listened to and performed jazz, blues, and classical music. But this album has always held a particular fascination for me. It is a masterpiece!
I think this entire album and the later one Sabotage ( they had something to prove ) is some of their best work. Now the real Black Sabbath starts to shine.
This was originally called Walpurgis Day about a satanic feast, but the record company would have no part of it. So they changed it into an anti war song. That's why Ozzy sings different lyrics on the live version, he was combining the two songs.
Walpurgis Day dates back to May 1 of the year 870, the feast commemorates the canonization of Saint Walpurga. Saint Walpurga was hailed by the Christians for battling pest, rabies, and whooping cough, as well as against witchcraft. Christians prayed to God through the intercession of Saint Walpurga in order to protect themselves from witchcraft. Traditionally it has little to do with a satanic feast with the exception of Anton LaVey author of The Satanic Bible (1966). Some pagan or occult groups might celebrate the same day however it celebrated all over Europe and Scandinavia with out much attention given to Satan. All sky-daddy gibberish is make-believe anyway.
Ok, when you guys get to Hand of Doom play it through to Rat Salad (it continues the experience). It's about a Vietnam Vet who can't get it out of his head and turns to drugs and shooting up. They masterfully relay the experience musically. I can't wait. Thanks guys.
Haven't been through all the comments but after hearing the Cake version you should give Brown Sabbath a listen😂 There's about ten people doing Latin versions is Sabbath songs I'm a welded on Black Sabbath listener and I love Brown Sabbath 🎉👍
Oh the Bowie Coke Mirror, classic rock and roll kitsch. I heard people used to win them at St. Anthony's Feast. But that was way back when the Godfather of Soul was in the belly of the beast.
The early 1970's was interesting with bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Budgie, and some other bands. Then you had the prog rock scene.
Remember when Bush mentioned his name in an audience and he raised up to be saluted, he looked like Christmas had come early. The song stands though, has to be said. How much for your honour, sir. Name the price. Probably why he lives in a mansion and I live in a shack.
Music by the creative genius lead guitarist Tony Iommi (eye-OWE-me) who invented metal; lyrics by the greatest bassist ever, Geezer (Terry Butler); who were the greatest songwriting team ever; awesome drums by Bill Ward, and great vocals by Ozzy (John) Osbourne. I hate the 1970 live version due to messed up lyrics and you virtually don't see the bass player at all.
Everyone always talks about Ozzy and rightfully so BUT Tony Iommi WAS Black Sabbath, the only member on every single Sabbath album, Geezer was on most but not all of them. The sound of his guitar was as revolutionary as Hendrix, Page or Van Halen to all heavy music from 1970 onward, he deserves all the respect in the world.
As a boomer that grew up listening to and loving black sabbath, sorry but the Cake version of war pigs was so lame. I tried to listen to as much of it as I could but had to kill the song somewhere in the middle when that fake arse handclapping came in. It was just embarrassing and did no justice to the original.
Listen to this sing by Black Sabbath, BUT THE DIO YEARS. Ronnie James Dio at vocals is FAR SUPERIOR. Makes it a far BETTER song. Check out the difference when the vocal GOAT adds all the emotion to the song as opposed to the drunken friend who pretended to be a singer for the band for the first 10 years.
