Ex Machina - Tearing Up the Dance Floor Extended

  • An in-depth look into the existential problems of creating an AI. Unlike other takes, this one considers the humanity of the AI and questions ours if we keep it locked in a cage. Are we all truly made equal? What are our goals if we are not human? How intelligent and unpredictable does something have to be before we consider it alive? Does wielding great power truly make us gods?
    These questions are nice and all, but this scene was by far my favourite. Taken from the extended scene in the movie extras.

    There are so many nuances to what they're doing. This is all very sophisticated. Oscar, in addition to dancing, he still needs to incorporate drunkenness and intensity into his moves. While Sonoya needs, while she seems human enough, to make her moves more 'clean' and a little less expressive than his. That's great acting.

    • @GabrielNicho
      @GabrielNicho 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      It adds to that surreal feeling of the movie. How it's kinda confusing. They keep throwing you between beautiful nature, and future tech sterile house. Talking to a robot, then talking to the human who created them... And even his dialogue is odd... You can't ever get a solid read on him and his intelligence/mentality. He makes all these different statements that are just all over the map, he pretends to not know who Caleb is quoting whenever he says a famous quote, then randomly he will add details or more information about a quote... Making the Japanese robot not speak English was also a good move, because it makes her all the more mysterious. How much does she know?
      The way ava looks fake at first, her face looks plastic and her movements are sharp and sudden..but slowly, every time you see her after her movements get more human and her skin looks more real.
      Its like as Caleb is convinced of her sentience, they fool the viewer by making her appear more human.
      The paranoia about the power outages, then the cameras and not knowing what the guy can see/hear and what he can't...
      Its like everything is artfully crafted to keep you off balance.
      This dance scene was perfect for that, and the look on Caleb's face while they're dancing really says it all.

    Okay I've watched this several times and being a leading authority on 'ExMachina' I almost lost my mind when the scene continued longer than in the original cut. I read the one comment about how he was glad they cut this because it took away from the original 'creepy/sexual' to just being silly. For a moment I agreed and then watched it again. I find Caleb is still completely questioning his sanity just like how the audience was like 'wtf'. It works beautifully. By him being probably drunk it just makes sense how he would have plopped in there danced and then fell. Caleb's shot is still effective because you just feel that he's losing it or thinking the other characters have lost it.

      It also sets up more ambiguity prior to the ending. The original cut makes it more clear that Nathan is deliberately obfuscating when Caleb asks about Ava's picture. I'm not really one for bigging up individual actors, and am more likely to watch a film based on the director or writer rather than who's in it. But this guy is a powerhouse, immense in everything I've seen him in

    my takeaway from this scene is that nathan has either watched kiyoko do this dance so many times that he actually memorized it; or he was the one who choreographed this dance for kiyoko when he programmed her. don’t know which one is more hilarious.

    • @jamesparker8066
      @jamesparker8066 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The latter works as a metaphor for the entire plot of the movie. Just like how Nathan programmed Ava to do her "dance" for Caleb. This extended scene also gives you a hint of the ending; Nathan ends up dying due to his own drunken hubris, and Ava is the one left standing or "dancing" in the end.
      Edit: Even the name of the song tells you how it's going to end. "Get down Saturday night". Day six is the final day of the test and when Nathan "gets down" in a manner of speaking.

    Such a good scene. By itself it's totally ordinary, but in the context of the story it's completely horrifying.
    The only more intense moment like that is when she peels her face open, and then you realize that the drunken-inventor guy did brain surgery to make her mute and his slave.

    I love how Oscar’s character Would have designed the robot to dance like that. Even though he spent a lot of time perfecting each movement to a particular song, he can still find the moment to let go, just how the main character breaks his focus against the other robot. Both choose to ignore or kid themselves into believing they’re having real experiences.

  • @R2XC

    There's something about the camera work from 0:17-0:21 that always makes this scene fire. The ever so slight shift to side after transitioning to a wider shot synced up with Nathan's swagger walk and Kiyoko's backward saunter gives GTA penthouse cutscene vibes. Having rewatched Ex Machina tons, I mainly just appreciate the visuals each time now lol

    You could argue that this movie suggests that the true measure of a machines humanity lies not in its ability to mimic and appear human, but our own ability to see and accept something else as human.
    In short: You want to create a human-like machine? Don't create it to be human. Create it to convince another human it is human.
