  • I raced Austin from the Training Tall TH-cam channel NOT on a rowing machine, but on the water at the San Diego Crew Classic AND we interviewed each other for a collab video that will BLOW your minds to see us both in one place!
    We talked about ACTUAL rowing, how it's not as inaccessible as you might think, and we reveal the results of our race against one another!

    Glad to see you guys hanging out, as I’ve also watched some of Austin’s training videos in my rowing journey. One of the inviting things about rowing is the supportive competitiveness of it… pulling for each other to do your best, while still having that desire-to-win attitude. That used to be called “sportsmanship” and is so often sadly absent in sports today. Good show, gentlemen!

    The two rowing titans of TH-cam together for the first time!!! These guys are super articulate and very gifted at laying down information in an effective, inspirational and useable way. Is it any surprise that when they get together, they produce a video that best distills the appeal of rowing, whether it be an erg, a scull or a shell? Khudos to you both..

    Wow, I first caught this video maybe a year ago- and I’m only now finally getting around to leaving both of you a long overdue note. Basically, *thank you* for everything I have learned about indoor rowing over the last several years thanks to all of your videos. I have watched many videos by the both of you, and your videos (along with some by British Rowing) are the only videos I consistently watch on indoor rowing. So thank you again for all of your help and expertise, and take a bow… you guys have certainly earned it!

    OMG! My 2 rowing mentors! So cool! Shane brings the cerebral and Austin the humor (still very very smart) to the skills that help me get better! Keep it up guys!

    Hey guys. You are both fantastic and I have learned so much from you both. I notice a few differences in technique like Austin drops his hands on the release and then raises the arms at the catch. But Shane says keep the chain and arms consistent at chest height and don’t raise or lower the arms. Why the different advice ?
    Thank you both for so much great inspiration and coaching. I could never have started rowing without the resources you provide. I am very grateful and so impressed by you both. I wish you both great success in your business ( and your rowing) and all the best in your lives.

    After becoming involved in sweep rowing about 2 years ago and turning category d this year I've got to second the recommendation to get on the water. Outside the physical element the degree of coordination is such a strange art form the whole thing becomes utterly compelling. It is hard to explain the ability of one man to bugger up an entire boat, but when it works.............

    Hello, Shane,
    I love your videos; they're very informative and I certainly did improve my rowing a lot in last months thanks to your tips. :)
    However, I haven't seen any video about rowing on slides. They were placed under the C2 in my gym recently (to prevent from damaging the floor, since some 'tough guys' were obviously rowing incorrectly and leaving black marks on the parquet) and I hate them; I don't know how to row on them after more than 5 years of rowing without them. It's totally different, legs don't work so much, and it annoys me so much that I started rowing in another gym. I'm just curious if you have any experience with this. They are supposed to imitate rowing on water more closely.
    Sunny spring greetings from Slovenia, EU! :)

    • @DarkHorseRowing
      @DarkHorseRowing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Metka! What a great question. I have plenty of experience with slides but we don't get many questions about them because they do post a challenge for a lot of people. The thing you have to keep in mind when rowing on slides is that the machine is going to move underneath you and that your body should be staying in place and because of this, rating higher is going to be easier and you have to really feel the machine. It's also very important that the slides are perfectly level otherwise the system won't work and you'll constantly be bouncing off the front or back. Does this help?

    • @SK_TorON
      @SK_TorON 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does rowing on a regular Concept 2 set on slides feel like rowing on a Dynamic Concept 2? I have watched videos of rowing on a Dynamic Concept 2 (a few years ago, Eric Murray even set an indoor World record of 1 hour rowing, and he used the Dynamic), but, what with the feet moving while the sit almost motionless, it looks weird... Any comments on the Dynamic, Shane? Is it good for working up sweat, or would you need to have an almost perfect technique to get a good workout on it?

    • @metkagolcman7377
      @metkagolcman7377 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your reply.
      Honestly, I don't intend to row on those things. I just wanted your opinion - is it better/worse/different. :) After all that time rowing without slides I don't wanna change my technique (however good, bad or average it is). It's really weird to slide on them, moving a bit both forward and backwards; like the machine is teasing you; last time I was on that C2 I almost felt seasick. :) Without slides I feel more 'grounded', you know, like rower is my reference point, static.

    LOL... I started out watching Austin. I loved the video. I'm starting the Learn To Row Program At the St. Louis Rowing Club in June. I'm working on getting conditioned for it so you will probably be hearing a lot from me. I'm a Professional Bodybuilder So of course don't want to lose weight or size :). Is there a weight limit to the boats in the normal master division? Does height matter? Would you and Training Tall be able to row together in a 2 person boat? Are you and Austin close in bodyweight?

    • @DarkHorseRowing
      @DarkHorseRowing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dena, there is not weight limit for heavyweights which for women is over 135, so it's only heavyweight/lightweight. Height always helps but more important is mechanics and ability to blend with the boat. Yes, Austin and I would be able to get in a boat together despite our height differences because we'd be able to blend well and I'd say we're relatively close in bodyweight although he may have me by a few pounds.

    • @DenaWesterfield
      @DenaWesterfield 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great and to the POINT thank you. I read that lightweight boat had to have an average weight of 125 for 2 person and 155 for 4 person. I saw there was a lightweight and open. I saw most open women were 6" or taller I am 5'2" 145 lbs. Hey I can't find my drag on my lifecore! How many s/m should I focus on?

    • @DenaWesterfield
      @DenaWesterfield 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What gives height an advantage? Stroke length? Where are the power strokers positioned in the boat? Or Skull.. right?!
