I love your videos, your positive attitude rings true. I'm just starting rowing, because it is "low impact" on my knees, and because it engages quite a few muscle groups. Going to go at it slowly, pay attention to form, and to my body. I'm going to reclaim my life, one moment at a time. Thanks, have an awesome week.

The hardest thing for me to learn has been the recovery part of the stroke. I started rowing last month and just finished rowing 160k meters today. The last 5k session I did today was the first time I've ever felt like I was getting any rest at all during the recovery. For some reason I just couldn't find the right rhythm so it always felt like I was pulling myself back to the catch with my hip flexors, which up until today were just constantly screaming at me. Up until today the only way I could do a long session was to row slow enough to actually pause for a second or two after each stroke to get that rest in between strokes. I'm not really even sure what fixed it for me. It just clicked today and now I can maintain 25 strokes per minute with less effort than it was taking to maintain 18 before.

Hello there from Shoreham England. I just chanced upon your programme, and I very much like your enthusiasm and your advice. For me, I've been a T1 diabetic since early teenage 50 years ago, have rowed crew in pairs, fours and eights up to Senior C level, and been a competitive cyclist and runner - 23 full marathons and loads of halves, 10 Ks and trail races. Now after half a century with the condition I have a lot of foot pain so my main exercise is an hour a day on my water rower, and I really find it enjoyable and theraputive! Keep encouraging people, thanks

I just started rowing at a new place down from work for me after 8.5 months post op spinal fusion and boy, is it a workout. Still sore the next few days, but a lot better than trying to figure out what is low impact for my back at a gym. But, love it after 2 sessions and the vibe at the studio is so positive and supportive. Love the community already!

I absolutely love your videos. I keep reviewing your beginner videos, especially to rehearse correct technique so it becomes ingrained. I've always been fascinated with rowing and Dark Horse and my gym's Concept2 Rower is my opportunity to learn it! (I saw the Concept2 Ski Erg behind you and I love that too!) I am a 5'1" nearly 71 year old lady that spent this Spring and Summer recovering from bilateral knee replacements, three months apart. My Orthopedic Surgeon was thrilled when he first met me because I had been going to a gym for two years after having gone to Physical Therapy. He predicted a very rapid recovery due to my preparation, and he was right. He cleared me three weeks ago for every activity in my gym, including treadmill, Ski Erg and Rower (except running). When I exercise, I don't exercise "like a 71 year old", I exercise like I would if I had no idea how old I am! The surgery has restored me as a human being and I am having more fun as a old person than I did as a young one! I am so enjoying rowing, that I look forward to each of my sessions to practice it. Thank you so much for your clear, highly descriptive, encouraging teaching style.

Great video. Just sat in a rowing machine for the first time ever this AM. Gonna learn it and make it my primary cardio exercise as it is low impact plus it works out your quads really well. Good advice on learning proper technique. I'm gonna take that 80/20 seriously. And what you said about the erg being in the corner out of the way? so true, in every facility. We are all dark horses, btw. Keep up the nice work.

I only started rowing this week and have done it 3x, I select the 2000m rowing workout on the machine as I am not very fit and I set the resistance on it to 7 (10 is the easiest on the one in my gym) and I have found it very challenging, turns out I have been told before that I should pull with the arms and put little pressure into the legs so my arms have been bearing the brunt of the work which has given me a cramp the first time I used it :D Thank you for showing the proper way to do it, it's helped immensely in making my stamina last and I'm now moving on to 5000m rowing exercises daily instead.

Hi Shane. Thank you for all the informative videos. In a couple of days I'm about to go to the gym to try rowing for the first time. I thought I would never go to a gym because I'd much rather exercise at home where no one is looking. I'm very overweight, so it will be extra uncomfortable for me, but I feel like rowing might just be the form of exercise that I'm actually going to like. Between you and another guy on here, I feel fairly confident in knowing what I'm supposed to do. I have watched so many videos. Anyway, before I go, I'm going to go over some of the videos and take notes so I won't forget the important points. But, I'll be thinking of you and all that you've taught me. Thanks.

Well, I tried it, and it didn't really go as smoothly as I had hoped it would, but I'll just have to try again tomorrow. I went pretty slowly so I could work on doing it right, but I felt really uncoordinated. My biggest concern was that my back wasn't straight enough, although someone told me it looked straight. Anyway, I know I'll get it eventually. Thanks again for all the good instruction, and for the encouragement, too.

Does rowing injure the wrists? I mean, all of that leg power has to pass through the wrists. That's my main concern about starting rowing. I'm 64 and out of shape. I used run many many years ago but my knees and feet can no longer handle it.

Thanks for the tips, I realized when you mentioned it that I'm guilty of pushing off with my toes instead of flat footed so I tried to work on that during this morning's 30 minute workout and was rewarded with a near record distance (for me). I also noticed that the power curves on the monitor were noticeably steeper on the front side then the back instead of being symmetrical. After thinking about it, it seems to me that the goal is to put as much force into the machine as quickly as possible which would create a steeper curve on the front then the back instead of being symmetrical. Am I deluded ?
Thanks for your videos, they have been a great help.

How cool that it had such an immediate impact. To answer your question though, you want to see a symmetrical curve because too much force up front can lead to a steep drop quickly which in effect reduces area under the force curve of power. You have to remember that the machine is measuring force output over distance as well so being able to apply as much force as you can over a period of time is important because that's what gives you actual power. Does that make sense?

@@DarkHorseRowing Thanks for the answer, I can see wanting to keep the length of power production long.
I was also wondering if you have any thoughts on using heart rate as a guide to regulate the amount of effort put out. I am trying to increase aerobic fitness as I have had a heart issue in the past (stent) so I want avoid over doing it while making progress. I believe I am accomplishing this. I searched your back videos but couldn't find much about using heart rate to monitor training intensity.

This video is great! My coach has said to focus on not lifting my heels. I noticed that you lift your heels slightly. Is it okay to have some heel lift?

I picked up an older rowing machine, Vitamaster 25R Listened to your video and appreciated the tips. I was concentrating on doing the movement correctly.. Did it for 10 minutes, a little soreness in my lower back. Am I doing something wrong or just need strengthening there as well? Also should I do the machine every day and every other day... Looking forward to seeing positive results ;o)

What suggestions would you give to a senior citizen who is interested in starting to row? Thank you ahead of time.

Concept 2 machines still unavailable in Europe, at least in Switzerland. I‘ve been on a wait list since last October, coming up to six months wait. Finally decided on a magnetic rowing machine, it‘s good, but lacks the pm5 monitor capabilities of the Concept. The important thing is to be using a rowing machine, great exercise.

Too much chitchat at the beginning about his tank top, but pretty good info starting at 4:30. Skip the first 4 minutes.

So I tried rowing in my late 50s and just couldn’t carry on through the boredom. Fast forward to retirement at 65 and I returned to rowing but with AirPods and tunes. I row for thirty minutes now and five days a week. One huge plus that I had no clue would happen to my body is the my neck skin under my chin got picked up and is taught. The neck sag is gone.
But one question I have is how long should one row and how many times per week?

I found you after searching for rowers and reviews on TH-cam and feel so blessed to have found you!!! I have knee problems after climbing accident years ago and really didn't know if rowing would be okay for me. You helped me truly understand the physics and form of rowing in extreme detail like no others out there. You truly have a gift! I'm still debating which rower to get, concept 2, Hydrow Rower, or Aviron,??? Money isn't the issue,? I'm not a gamer, am 57 years old trying to get back in shape and strengthen my knees. I was ripped 10 years sgo before tearing my meniscus and beford menopause. I need inspiration and am not competitive at all except challenging myself. What do you think of the 3 rowers I mentioned? Also, the future of them with updates?
