I find this weird about western culture.I am married and I agree with Jeannie. In my culture your last name represents your history and your roots. It doesn't make you any less of a couple or family to not take your husbands name

I can relate. Family names aren't typical in my culture. I've always had a different last name to the people in my family, including my mum, and I've literally never felt any less connected to them as a result.
Since I'm now living in a different country/culture, there's a big change that I'll marry someone from a different culture. I plan on keeping my last name to retain my roots

In the Hmong Culture, it's considered taboo and unacceptable to date or marry someone with the same last name, so we NEVER change our last names to match our husband's ever. Only our children will keep the same last name as the father.

@Salina Estifanos interesting because that's what Muslims do. The fathers first name becomes the sons last name and sometimes the grandfather's first name is the second last name. Also Muslim women do not change their last name after marriage

    • @soffia323

I'm icelandic and last names come directly from the fathers first name and you add dottir (daughter) or son . And when your married you never change your name everyone keeps their birth name. In situations where you dont know the father or they're not involved you can use the moms first name or make it (translated) warriors (daughter or son). I personally will never get ride of my icelandic name and will add my husbands name if there not icelandic.

      Dema is my name
      Thafer is my father

Even in the 90s when I was in elementary I had my dads last name but my mom was the one who took me to the doctors or dealt with my school no one ever gave her a hard time ever or was confused and she had a different last name from me and so did about of other parents who picked up there kids. I’m sure the man i marry will be understanding but his opinion is one that matters because he may feel the similar about his last name as well. I was not married when I had my first two children, so naturally to me, my kids got my last name. I think women shouldn't feel like their kids have to have the mans last name, especially if you aren't married. You brought the child into this world, you decide their name 💪♀️
Later in life I got married and changed my name and my kids names to my husbands. I completely regretted it and wanted all our names changed back, my husband was pissed off at first so I kept all the names his but as time went on he saw that my side of the family are who we are close with and his side had no involvement or interest. So we decided to change my husband, kids, and myself to my maiden name. I feel proud representing my family, my roots, and the name of the people who love us.

My dad was a teacher, so I heard ALL the tea when it came to my teachers, honey lol. But in middle school, my gym teacher's cell phone was stolen by a student. The child looked through it of course, but it wasn't until the next day that the mom realized her child had someone's phone, so she brought it back to the school. She went off on the gym teacher because he had porn in his phone and said he should be fired because of it. It didn't make sense to me then and it still doesn't make sense to me now. My gym teacher did not get fired and to my knowledge, the child was not reprimanded for it, but I remember it being such a scandal in my 7th-grade year. I studied to become a teacher for four years only to find out I didn't want to be a teacher by the 4th year. Anyway, I say all that to say, children know what they're doing. The children should be reprimanded for the action, not the adult. And teachers have a life outside of school and what goes on in their personal life should not affect their job as long as it's not harming anyone else. This teacher should not have been fired. That wasn't fair for her to lose her job over such a personal situation.

I love that we don't do this in Mexico; instead we have two last names: one from each parent. When we marry, we say both the husband and the wife's first last name to call the new family as a whole, which in turn becomes the combined last name for that couple's children. In that way, I feel we keep our roots while also creating a new path for new families. Wives may choose to add "of husband's first last name" at the end of their name, although personally I don't do this. I believe it all comes down to culture and preference. We should do what feels right for us. :)

I am not changing nor hyphenating my name. I identify with my name too much. I also have my mother's last name and I am the only child. I don't understand the point in a woman changing her name because she became a wife. I can love you with my same name.

I come from a culture where the wife keeps her last name AND the children get their own unique last names. Family names are the exception, not the rule for us. Personally, I'm planning to keep my last name if/when I get married but I'll let my future husband choose whether to pass on his name or give each kid their own name.
As for other women, I think they should just do whatever works for them. Traditions and cultures differ and evolve, so there is no one way to do this

@@crazyanimeloveable I think Myanmar people do this, though probably there are other cultures who do it as well. They make up a new last name for each generation of the family. So the mom would have a different last name from the husband but the kids would have the same last name, so people with the same last name are siblings. I honestly think that's a really cool way to do it, wish it was more prevalent!

@@crazyanimeloveable that means that everyone in the family has a different last name. For example (I'm gonna use European names for clarification), dad = Henry Smith, mum = Sophie Jones, oldest son = Tom Morgan, daughter = Kacey Micheals & youngest son = Richard Banks. Basically, the wife does not take her husband's name when they get married. Also, the children are each given their own first and last names, and do not take their father's nor their mother's last name.
Its an interesting tradition that I haven't seen been done outside East Africa

I wasn’t married when I had my kids, so both of my kids have MY last name. We did get married after, but my kids and I have never changed our names. I always thought that we would, but now I don’t see it as important. My husband couldn’t care less either. I’ve always personally thought that it’s ridiculous that kids are “supposed” to take the dad’s last name. So often those dads don’t even stay in the picture! Our thought was that everything goes through me. Insurance, appointments, everything... So it just made sense to give them MY name. If we need to use a family name for something, then we do use my husband’s last name (it’s far less common) but legally we have separate names. I love him to death and I’m proud to be his wife. I still would call myself Mrs. (with his last name) but I don’t see myself changing it legally. Our kids are old enough to vocalize what they would like and they’re happy as is too.

I used to work at social security, and I had this couple come in to change their last names. The first person already had a hyphenated last name, and they insisted on putting the second person's last name in the middle of the first persons hyphenated last name. And none of these names were short. We were exactly at the character limit in the system.... idk if they realized they were actually going to have to sign this now.... idk I thought it was a really bad idea

    My OPINIONS on each topic
    ----------------
Last Name Changes : I honestly think it’s up the woman and the couple... I know some men who don’t have a problem with their wife not wanting to change their last name... it’s deeper than just “ oh it’s a last name “ sometimes people are proud of where they came from and how hard they worked with their name but I would say compromise and hyphenate !
Teacher’s Nude Photos Shared : FIRST of all... this is a PRIVATE issue... it’s not her fault that she lost her phone HOWEVER those kids should be punished because that’s invasion of privacy and they SHARED it ! I don’t understand why they would that... if you know better then they should do better ! Saying “ they were kids “ is not an excuse.. they’re high school students... that’s worth an suspension or an expulsion cuz that’s illegal !
Can Having Sex Everyday Fix a Relationship ?!!! : It’s funny because literally last season Adrienne said she’s kept her word ever since her & Israel got married 😂 365 days having sex... yeah... I’ll pass ! I’m not forcing anything.... if I’m not feeling it... I’m not doing it cuz I won’t be into it 💀 but Kudos to Ade... her 2nd year is coming up so let’s see what it’s like by year 3 lol

I think because they dated a short time before getting married,it makes sense that they have sex more than the average married couple in their early years of marriage.esp that even before marriage,Ade was in a relationship 6 years and she said she and her man did it everyday whenever they were together.so I believe her.i don't think its 365/365 days coz Israel travels, they not together everyday.it probably will change after having kids tho.

@jinminkook a lot of traditions that are kept these days started from something much less innocent than the actual tradition, but that doesn't mean it is a bad tradition. Either way, regardless of how it started, people are free to choose for themselves whether they want to follow the tradition or not. You do you and let others to as they please.

When I was young I always couldn’t wait till I was married so I could change my last name because I really don’t like it, just my luck that my fiancé’s name is even more ridiculous than mine. He was surprised that I wanted to change my last name to his because it is a stupid last name but I love it because it’s his last name. I think it’s definitely up to the woman to decide what she wants to do as it’s her name but I just feel like it will connect us and I’ll be proud to be his wife and part of his family and eventually when we have children we will all share the same name.

Single moms give kids their father's last name ALL the time. I've never heard of them having any problems with picking their kids up at school or at the doctors office or even grabbing their birth records from city hall. As long as you have the right documents and YOUR name (if its the same as theirs or not) is on their birth certificate it'll never be a problem in those types of situations
