Great vid, I will add that if u want to use the raw signal into an impulse loader, instead of using the mic emulatator output, u can use the effects loop send as an output (of course with the mic defeat button engaged) into an external impulse loader or through interface into a daw with an impulse loader plugin and use ur favorite impulses, which sounds way better than the mic emulation. Basically it comes with an internal speaker load box, which is awesome because load boxes aren't cheap

CREPERUM Band Ended up selling mine about a year ago for a 5150 50 watt simply for the tone difference and build quality. After 8 months it just wasn’t holding up. Plus I wanted the 6L6 power tubes of the 5150. The low end on the Peavey could be a bit thin and required a 10 band EQ in the fx loop to compensate. And you definitely would want to run it through a 4x12 to push the volume I was. But if I recall I had it at around 1030/11 o’ clock. But long story short: it can make the noise but I’d recommend (for the price) a used 5150 if you’re gigging and use the Peavey in a permanent jam location or for bedroom jams/recording. I also had found they used cheap ruby tubes that I had to swap because they were so noisy and sounded bad. Taking it apart to swap the tubes was terrifying to uncover how poorly this thing was constructed and it really started literally decaying at a rapid pace after that. But that’s my two cents for what it’s worth!

I am looking at this or Marshall DSL15C head as my next amp. Which do you think is more versatile? I usually play metal and classic rock. Does this Peavey take pedals well?
Hello! I would say that if you really cherish a clean channel, then you ought to go with the Marshall because the Peavey really doesn't really clean up. For metal I would say the Peavey beats the marshall for sure. They will both take pedals well, but the marshall may benefit more from overdrive/ distortion pedals. The Peavey really flourishes with high gain, but it is a bit of a one trick pony. The peavey does have built in reverb though, and more wattage, plus the direct out functions if you're interested in that. So overall I would advise you to go with the amp that satisfies you the most with its main feature being the sound. If you really want that iconic metal sound, get the peavey, but if you would want clean tone and the marshall sound, then get the marshall. Thanks for your question!
Never had a tube amp. Just got this thing. Love it. But can someone explain the standby thing. Do I turn power switch on, wait 30 seconds or so then turn standby on? Do I leave standby on the whole time I jam? Do I flick both switches off when turning it off. Thanks. Sorry for noob questions
Chris Calvert Not a problem! Everyone that playsbtube amps had these questions at some point. What you traditionally do is click the power switch up, wait 30seconds, then click the standby swith up. Both lights above the switches will be green when its fully on. Turning it off you would do the reverse order click stanby down, then power down. The whole point of waiting the 30secs is to let the tubes heat up. Since this amp is really small it doesnt take a long time to heat up at all. Its kinda like one of those old giant box TVs where the screen is the tube. When you turn it on it takes a little while for it to turn on completely. Thats the nature of tube technology, they are meant to run hot.
Aaron Aranda Another question. I have a really bad hum noise when on the lead channel. Especially when facing the amp with the guitar. (Emgs) how can I go about fixing this issue.
Well any amp distortion will have a buzz/ hiss noise. It gets really bad if your amp is cranked and you're really close to it. You can try turning down some of the gain. Otherwise, you can get rid of the hiss completely with a noise gate pedal. I made a video explaining that here. th-cam.com/video/I0bV3MBK1OQ/w-d-xo.html
I'm shopping for a lunchbox type amp and a 2x12 and I've pretty much narrowed my selection down to this amp, the EVH 5150 lbx (not sure about version 1 or 2), and the Orange Jim Root Dark Terror. Great review...but I'm still conflicted lol
Yes, because the channel one toggles the crunch and the lead channel. And other one does fx loop and reverb. Each jack has two functions. So unless you got some custom footswitch that had 4 switches and 2 plugs, you need 2 individual footswitches to control everything.
Now could you play this compeletely out of itself, no cab? I currently do not have a cabinet but I've heard that it is possible to just plug your amp head into the speaker of a combo amp. However, my amp is a Kustom Defender 50W tube amp and the tubes are too old to be active. I am planning on buying a new set--but my question is would it be possible to simply use the speaker without activating the Kustom's tubes and having the 6505's tubes just power the speaker alone?
Good question! That is totally possible, a combo amp is essentially a head and cabinet screwed together, so you can simply bypass the amp and use just the speaker. It just depends how your speaker is wired in the back. If it's just a 1/4 inch speaker jack connection you can unplug it and put it into the peavey head. Keep your combo amp unplugged too just to be safe when touching connections in the back.
@@aaronarandac4 Thanks for the quick reply! And yes, I'm aware of the headphone function I just tried it, but I'm really wanting to play this out loud too. However, with tube amps I understand the precautions involved in making sure they stay in the right conditions so I wanted to make sure about the combo amp speaker idea. This should definitely pass for the meantime until I save up for a good cab to match. Any suggestions on affordable cabs that would work best with this amp? Perferrably one that handles tight low ends and clear mids well? Hope I'm not asking too much, just looking for some suggestions :)
@@echoflame4279 Totally, just check the Ohms on the speaker and line it up on the back of the peavey. As for affordable cabinets I would really recommend the harley benton 2x12 because it had celestion v30 speakers in it. Good question, the bright button is not footswitchable. Only the lead and crunch channels are, and the reverb an fx loop. The bright button really doesnt boost anything anyways, it just adds more treble.
@@aaronarandac4 great, thx for the help... Just another question: where should I plug the boost in then? Just in my customized pedal board or directly in the 6505mh?
If I hook this up via USB and run it through a DAW I'm sure you can use a cab loader with Marshall IR cabs can't you? The USB sound on its own isn't great IMO. Please advise.
Yes of course, you can do anything to it after the fact in a daw, although the usb audio does have a microphone cab emulation built in already so you may have to be selective on what other cab emulations you put on it.
@@aaronarandac4 - I've seen you can plug into the amps "send" loop straight into the input of an interface and then use an IR loader to use any IR you want. Why have I not been doing this.....lol. Now I can have pure valve tone and use DAW effects such as Eventide H3000 and Soundtoys rack effects. No more software amps for me. Amp is £399 in UK brand new.......I'm sold!!
Dale Hards Depends on the headphones you use, but i think the headphone jack uses the same cabinet emulation as the msdi and usb outputs. That being said, in my opinion the cabinet emulation lacks a lot of high end frequencies, and the small trebly speakers of most headphones helps to compensate for that. Still wont beat an actual speaker cab though.
Great! Thanks for the quick reply! Can you plug headphones in without a cab connected using the speaker defeat or is that still bad for the transformers?
Dave Smith i commented earlier about mine. I actually ended up selling it to grab a 50w 5150. The reason was that although loud, this thing lacked low end. An mxr 10 band eq went miles to improving it in the fx loop but until I test drove an EVH 50w I didn’t realize how bad the low end was.
It sounds pretty much identical to the mic simulated line out in this video. Of course it will sound slightly different through different headphones, but for the mot part it is pretty decent.
Good question, the Bugera Trirec does have a ton more features and capabilities, but if we are just talking clean tone and distortion tone then we can narrow it down. The Bugera has superior cleans because the peavey isn't really meant to be clean. However, I'd probably pick the Peavey for straight metal tones because it doesn't disappoint. The Bugera is also really good for metal, but what it does well that the peavey doesn't is lighter overdrive tones. All that being said, I do use the Bugera more often than the Peavey, primarily because I require a clean channel quite often.
Hey Aaron, I once played the riff you started at 08:30, but now don't remember the song. Could you help me with this track/band? Thank you! PS: Nice vid!
I got it to work on reaper, make sure the amp isn't on standby, and both guitar and amps volumes are appropriately up. Go to Reapers preferences/options. The amp will show up under audio device as usb audio codec. Then make sure the new track you start is armed to record. You should have sound after that. The Peavey 6505 mh doesn't have any additional drivers to download, so depending on what DAW you're using, it will show up under device settings or it won't. I also got it to work on audacity, same thing essentially, make sure that the recording device is set to usb audio codec.
Aaron Aranda hey man thanks so much! So I found out I needed to crank the volume a bit...i had it set for around 1 lol currently in an apartment so i always have it dialed in rather low! Got it to work in audacity! Thanks again!
Why didnt they simply make this a 1x12 Combo ..... Now I have to spend around 800 to get thios amp, gotta find a decent 2x12 AFTER I spend PS5 money on the amp lol
I've wondered the same thing for years. The 6505+ combo is great, but it's huge and difficult to get good really low bedroom volume for practicing without disturbing anyone else in the house. 60 watts is way too much for that. This head in a combo amp with a 10" or 12" speaker would be nice.
@@ESPE2M1 Update here .... A fix was initiated sometime after April of 2017 so I made sure of a good manufacturing date before I purchased my amplifier. These can be found at the Peavey website. Please forgive me re: ohmage!
@@thomaspeters5889 No worries, thanks for the overheating information. I haven't heard of it in regards to this amp till now. I shall look into it. Cheers!
Made in China! What?! Dang! Peavey has always been the epitome of Americana! I haven't looked at guitar amps in 20 years .. are all Peavey amps made in China now? Ohh well still sounds great 👍
Siriusblck3 Ahh didn't know that. Some China stuff I've bought had issues, for instance the Behringer Deepmind 12 synth I bought this past year .. cool sounding, but just really poor workmanship on the keybed. I have never had anything guitar related that was made in China so I'm not sure there. The MIM stuff has been great. I almost consider the Fender Ensenada stuff American made. I know the guy who set up the Fender Ensenada factory in the 90's (Dave Maddox .. a US citizen) Was a neihbor of mine here in So.Cal. The Ensenada factory is only an hour away from us here in So.Cal., and there are almost as many hispanic workers at the US factory as there are the Ensenada factory, and I'd argue some of those Ensenada employee's take more pride in their work than some of the US guys I've met (when Fender was in Fullerton at least). Dave was a stickler for quality personel at that Ensenada plant, and it still shows these many years latter. The MIM Charvel I have is just as nice as the one I had in 1979/80. Anyway no matter if its made in China or not I still plan on getting the 6505mh......it sounds good. Thanks again for your vid.
For what I read, the only issue on this MH is that SOME of them can kinda overheat, but is not is just in rare cases. I have played through the 6505+ 112 combo, and the tone was amazing, and felt well built as well, and they are crafted in China too.

Chris Calvert how did you connect your amp head??Cabinet??
Can i play live with this Amp?
Direct into the PA?
You sure can, it has a direct out with speaker cabinet emulation.
I'm shopping for a lunchbox type amp and a 2x12 and I've pretty much narrowed my selection down to this amp, the EVH 5150 lbx (not sure about version 1 or 2), and the Orange Jim Root Dark Terror. Great review...but I'm still conflicted lol
superbri007 JR terror has no clean so i personally rule that out
Not sure about evh for clean but drive is very good
it has 2 jack inputs on the back one to change between channel and one to control effects loop right? so do i really need to buy 2 footswitches?
Also, this amp has a headphone jack so you could use it with just headphones and no cab as well.
Just about any cabinet with celestion v 30s will go great with this head.

2:04 SOLD (I live in an apartment so I want a small amp with badass tone at low volumes)
For the $500 these are really nice heads!
What guitar is that black satin beauty???
Thank you! That is a schecter blackjack atx solo 6.
@@aaronarandac4 thank you, nice video btw
If I want to boost the RYTHM channel, can I use the bright button, pushing the right button on peavey footswitch or it is not possible?
Good question, the bright button is not footswitchable. Only the lead and crunch channels are, and the reverb an fx loop. The bright button really doesnt boost anything anyways, it just adds more treble.
@@aaronarandac4 okay thx my friend.. So, is there any ways to do a boost without using any other boost pedal, but is own footswitch?
@@madtheo4788 No you're going to need an extra pedal of some sort.
@@aaronarandac4 great, thx for the help... Just another question: where should I plug the boost in then? Just in my customized pedal board or directly in the 6505mh?
@@madtheo4788 Id put it with the pedal board
Now I have built to fall in my head...stay metal!!!!🤘🏽
How does it sound on headphones? I feel the XLR and USB outputs leave a lot to be desired
@@garrettendi just make sure to press the speaker button in the back to headphones
In the MG cab do you have the stock speakers?
Yes!
anyone still playing these? thinking about picking one up
Dave Smith i commented earlier about mine. I actually ended up selling it to grab a 50w 5150. The reason was that although loud, this thing lacked low end. An mxr 10 band eq went miles to improving it in the fx loop but until I test drove an EVH 50w I didn’t realize how bad the low end was.
How does the headphone option sound? I live in an apartment, therefore a cab is out of the question
It sounds pretty much identical to the mic simulated line out in this video. Of course it will sound slightly different through different headphones, but for the mot part it is pretty decent.
Headphones with mine sounds terrible
You actually hear it at 5:43.
music at 5:50 please?
The music there was just a riff off the top of my head, not an actual song I know of.
@@aaronarandac4 could you give the tabs or tell how to play? sounds really good :)
How does it sound on 1 watt mode Im looking for an amp I can play in my bedroom.
Arson_ It still sounds great, pretty quiet too. You can probably get away with the 5 watt setting as well.
Ah cool thanks for the reply.
1:03 Peasants control? I take it!
Apparently, my pickups have a ton of bass, i keep my bass on 2 lol
You prefer this or the Bugera?
Good question, the Bugera Trirec does have a ton more features and capabilities, but if we are just talking clean tone and distortion tone then we can narrow it down. The Bugera has superior cleans because the peavey isn't really meant to be clean. However, I'd probably pick the Peavey for straight metal tones because it doesn't disappoint. The Bugera is also really good for metal, but what it does well that the peavey doesn't is lighter overdrive tones. All that being said, I do use the Bugera more often than the Peavey, primarily because I require a clean channel quite often.
Tri rec sounds better loud though huh
Hey Aaron, I once played the riff you started at 08:30, but now don't remember the song. Could you help me with this track/band?
Thank you!
PS: Nice vid!
Ah yes! That is Bullet for my Valentine's "Hearts Burst into Fire"
Also do you have any advice for using the usb out? Can't figure out if its a driver thing but I can't get any sound lol
What software are you using? I know it's not compatible with studio one.
Aaron Aranda i tried reaper and audacity without any luck :/
I bought the amp, bought a Eminence Manowar 12" , sheet of 1/2" plywood had home depot make the cuts went home & build a 1x12 cabinet ...... laid an old 12 face down and traced around it, cut 1 inch inside the circle,. .... Its been a month & this amp setup its Brutal & LOUD. Just made a recording on my channel an I uploaded just now, audio only . Bedroom vol is no problem , it has lower watt settings on back.
@@97warlock nice, you should upload a video. I know the 6505mh has the 1/5/20 watt settings which is perfect for bedroom use. That's why I was comparing it to the 6605+ combo amp which doesn't. Peavey should make a combo amp using the 6505mh like yours for those that like the 6505+ combo but need something smaller. The 6505+ combo is too much for the house or even to lug around.
@@ESPE2M1 I uploaded a video today,a few hours ago ........ but its just a Blue screen ,but you can hear it. I made an mp3 & converted it to Video & uploaded it to my channel.
@@97warlock I use a ValveKing mini head with a 112 and 212 cab (both homemade) depending on what I need and I like it a lot. Super easy to move with the 112. I put Man-O-War in my 112 as well and love it. The 212 has a Swamp Thang and a Legend V12.
Overall a great sounding little amp, just impulse purchased a used one for the studio for 325...yay...
Have to say though...Hate the sound of this (or any hi-gain amp) with scooped mids, just bad sounding.
Ohm...age?
It has a switch for 8 and 16 ohms
Perhaps I owe you an apology. You never hear this word in electronic engineering circles and we still believe it was created by the music industry but no matter....I noticed you didn't mention the overheating issues associated with this amp model. A fix was initiated sometime after April of 2017 so I made sure of a good manufacturing date before I purchased my amplifier. I played on an older one at the music store for months and just fell in love with it. I suggest reading Hartley Peavey's white papers regarding the standby switch. These can be found at the Peavey website. Please forgive me re: ohmage!
@@thomaspeters5889 No worries, thanks for the overheating information. I haven't heard of it in regards to this amp till now. I shall look into it. Cheers!

Yea
Its so dark and hmm plastic
Great demo, but was waiting for you to crank up that pre-gain and make that little fucker growl haha!

Made in China! What?! Dang! Peavey has always been the epitome of Americana! I haven't looked at guitar amps in 20 years .. are all Peavey amps made in China now? Ohh well still sounds great 👍
Made in china, but designed and engineered in the USA.
Only the mini heads are made in china, even the news EVH 5150 III 50w by Fender are made in Mexico, not in US
Siriusblck3 Ahh didn't know that.
Check out the Joyo zombie. They are a chinese company that make some truly kick ass mini tube amps for a low price. shits all over line 6 lol
5 minutes of discussing well known features and no decent cleans demonstration?
Stop scooping your mids damnit lmao
