    This is probably one of the most honest, and balanced reviews of the film I've seen. Totally agree with the complaints about the fight scenes, and some of the CGI... weird considering Black Panther had the same budget as Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and Dr Strange's budget was less than Black Panther.

    • @ryodash
      @ryodash 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Same budget as The Last Jedi, too. Black Panther looked like it had twenty percent of that budget.

    • @pascha120
      @pascha120 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      George Massey That's crazy... I had no idea BP and TLJ's budgets were the same! It's pretty bizarre when you look at different budgets (while slightly adjusting for inflation), and think about the CGI/action sequences in your head...
      Black Panther = $200 m
      The Last Jedi = $200 m
      Thor: Ragnarok = $180 m
      Spider-Man: Homecoming = $175 m
      Guardians 2 = $200 m
      Dr Strange = $165 m
      Perhaps Marvel allocated more of the budget towards domestic and international promo for BP? Either way, considering the huge success of this first film... it'll be interesting to see what they can do (with what I'm assuming will be an amped up budget) re CGI/action in the inevitable sequel.

    • @pascha120
      @pascha120 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Mmm Ghool I'm sure Marvel would've had to pay loads of royalties re the two Guardians soundtracks too, but having Kendrick (and other artists) write new material for an entire album... I think you're definitely on to something there!
      Still really disappointed by the clunky/rubbery CGI, and kind of lacklustre action scenes though... something I think they seriously need to redress in the inevitable sequel.

    • @pascha120
      @pascha120 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Lamashtar Huh, interesting! IA, they definitely busted a lot of money on locations too. They filmed in Korea, 3 countries in Africa (South Africa, Zambia, and Uganda), Argentina (specifically Iguazu Falls which is a stunning location), and the US. Seems like the cost of recording an all-star soundtrack, paired with filming at numerous overseas locations, gave Coogler very little wriggle room re CGI/action.
      Considering how successful the film has been so far--the BP album seems to be selling very well too--it'll be interesting to see what the budget of an inevitable BP sequel will amount to... because BP and Killmonger looked downright rubbery in the final sound staged scene.

    • @SuperShanko
      @SuperShanko 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The simple matter is that it's on the filmmaker. I know he is he who should not be named, but MOS had a budget of 225, and Krypton was fucking amazing while Superman learning to fly is also fucking amazing, or look at Gravity having only a 100M budget. But Coogler never did big budget like this before and clearly doesn't have that kind of experience yet.

    Not "one of the best reviewed," according to Rotten Tomatoes weighted average, this is THE #1 film of all time. Yes, every other movie you can think of (The Godfather II, Citizen Kane, Amadeus, Shawshank Redemption, etc), EVERYTHING comes after Black Panther in their list. This is the pinnacle of film, according to RT. Very strange . . .

    • @Kaminah0
      @Kaminah0 5 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      @Paulo Pereira I mean it kind of makes sense. RT isn't x movie is BETTER than y movie. The only thing they can attempt to do is quantify how many people think it's a 5 star film.
      RT didn't exist until 1998. Movies have gained more widespread appeal and RT is more popular. So now a few things effect the score. How good the movie is, and how many people are likely to log onto RT and then rate it. And how many people are willing to rate it high, or low for other reasons. So it makes sense that a modern movie will have an easier time getting a high score on RT because there are more people watching it and then going on RT rather than logging on RT to rate a movie that is older.

    • @KetsubanSolo
      @KetsubanSolo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +107

      A lot of people don't understand that Rotten Tomatoes' score is very binary. A movie can be like a C+ to one reviewer, but RT will count that as a positive review overall, and THAT goes towards the RT score.
      Generally speaking, you're SUPPOSED to use the site to access multiple reviews quickly, but most people are lazy and just let RT summarize it for them, which leads to stuff like that. Otherwise they'd find a bunch if either middling reviews or reviews from critics with a track record for bias.

They still have monarchs with absolute power and the power isn't just political, they have actual super powers.
    And everything in the world is kept kind of vague. You don't know what regular Wakandans do, just like how you don't know what regular Asgardians do. You don't know how anything in their societies function outside the ruling powers they show.

    The thing that bothers me the most about this movie is Killmonger. He’s literally gone for an hour, and after a badass intro we have literally NOTHING in the way of character development or motivation from the character. His exposition is literally told from a file, and the entire concept of his creation is muddled because they wasted time to reveal the twist we all saw coming.
    We don’t see him grow as a character. He’s kinda just dumped on us at the end, making his “I want to kill every white person on the planet and have a global empire of black people” rhetoric and main motivation completely come out of left field. Him wanting to kill T’Challa makes sense, that’s definitely explicitly shown and stated, his entire plan doesn’t. I get the racial context, I get the feelings, what I don’t get is how the orphaned son of an arms dealer from Wakanda goes to Harvard and becomes a legend in the US military to a militant genocidal radical
    It just felt like I missed something. The movie really suffered without having more time for him. Everything just seems squished at the end.

    It was an overall good film, though far from Marvel's best. My issue is the hype surrounding it. It's fine but it's hugely overrated.
    Here's the thing - I don't think that everyone loved it at all. I think that a lot of people were afraid to criticise it. And that's a huge difference.

      clariola lack of black investment in their communities and businesses is a classic economics problem. Read any of the hundreds of papers on it. The fact you think it’s a lie is just ignorance. It’s one of the major hurdles to improvement and they’re doing it to themselves. Go watch Chris Rock in “I’m Gonna Got You Sucka” if you want a humorous take on the lack of investment inherent in black culture.
      Meanwhile over a trillion dollars from the American tax payer has been spent since LBJ to provide welfare and social services to inner city blacks and the results have been less than zero improvement.

If I’m interested, I’ll try to go see it. If not, I won’t. There’s no urgency in consuming this kind of media. People do not seem to have caught up to the fact that these are big budget studio films trying to make a huge profit, and to the studios you’re just another potential purchaser, so they’ll do whatever they can to get you into the theater.

    The problem with superhero movies is the villain IS usually right. Like, the villain is the one who wants to change the status quo and is usually given some real criticism to add some depth to them. They'll do something evil or take it too far in order justify stopping them. Superhero movies are basically inherently conservative, their heroes try to stop the world from changing, they never actively try to change it themselves.

    • @hyruleorchestra4339
      @hyruleorchestra4339 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      This is exactly why those movies are so successful. Most people don't like to be entertained and challenged at the same time. • @Keaze

      It's just another angle that marketing departments can use to generate hype. Diversity itself isn't the problem so much as marketing - Disney is amazing at marketing and generating hype, whether it uses diversity (Black Panther) or just gets people riled up in anticipation of a big franchise (The Force Awakens). Ghostbusters tried to do the same thing and failed miserably. More recently, Annihilation made an all-female movie and didn't even advertise it as such, which is noble enough, but resulted in a much smaller box office return.

It had a genuinely good villain, and a genuinely interesting ethical debate. One think I thought was pretty cool was the way they used the camera when Killmonger took over they cut to the thrown with the camera upside down and using the music by having it be more traditional when T'Challa was king but when Killmonger became king the music changed to a more rap type beat.

    idk why they'd say the movie feels refreshing and new when all I got from this episode was that the actors are good, the villain has sensible motivation and the visuals are interesting. Seems like a generic super hero movie with little to say.

    • @timeyinsholaye9169
      @timeyinsholaye9169 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Because you hardly get that with Marvel movies. Villains always have shit motivation or nothing at all, never have a message to make you think, and it was 90% serious. Most marvel movies are comedy comedy comedy

    • @harate
      @harate 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Timeyin Sholaye yeah but Marvel was too skittish to tackle the most interesting villain. He barely got screen time and his ideals weren’t fleshed out. You can tell the producers felt uncomfortable going all in on the oppression narrative so you had a second mini movie about the red herring Ulysses Claw

    • @tangentcausality
      @tangentcausality 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know how many of the other commentators actually saw the movie, but when watching it, it doesn't feel overwhelmingly like a superhero movie for most of its runtime. The primary conflict is really over a succession struggle and rival ideologies about the running of a state and the obligations of the powerful to the weak (Michael B. Jordan's character does explicitly say he will be supporting every oppressed group, not just black people). It's only in the car chase scene and
      at the end with the dualing Black Panthers that it really feels like a superhero movie.
      The succession system they establish for Wakanda with ritual combat does actually provide a much stronger basis for why it would be resolved with personal combat, but it still does feel a little disappointing resolution to the conflict of the movie. Especially because it actually has the Hegelian thesis-antithesis-synthesis form in working through the ideological conflict. While a succession struggle does give a good reason for resolving it with violence, they don't do much to tie the sides to strength of ideology, which is why the ending battle feels kinda cheap.
      That and because they were just desperate to find something for Martin Freeman to do so he doesn't feel as utterly unnecessary as he actually was. I mean, I love him as an actor, but holy crap did he feel out of place. Maybe it was a comment on tokenism, because the movie seemed VERY aware of this, but I really just wish he weren't in the movie after Busan.

    I think Jay said it best in another video i think it was in the Thor Ragnarok review.Marvel movies at this point should be treated like a tv show, only we get a new episode every 3-4 months.The only thing that we should expect from the standalone movies is to at least try to be something different like it has been happening after civil war.Ragnarok was basically a comedy, Spiderman Homecoming a coming of age teen movie,Black Panther a very good representation of various issues.They are still entertaining but also have an identity.I am afraid though that with Infinity war coming they really wont like that one because i really dont think you can do that in a movie like this with 2000 characters all over the place and constant action probably.Infinity war is for those who love the franchise from the get go.I cant wait for tha review and i hope Rich is with them on that one

    Regarding combat to choose a leader, even for a country with advanced technology. Remember that most of the tribes rejected the opportunity to challenge for the throne, and Shuri was in the crowd openly mocking the ceremony. Which gives some indication that perhaps the challenge ceremony is normally just that, a "ceremony" that was supposed to be a mere formality. It may have been a surprise that anyone would actually do a challenge. Both characters that did it, at different times in the movie, had chips on their shoulders for various reasons.
    Anyway, the challenge ceremony is from the comics, so just go with it. :)
    If Klingons (which RLM loves) can have advanced tech yet still do mortal combat for rulership, then why can't another fictional society?
