    At the beginning of a new year, it’s a good idea to take an inventory of the credit cards you already have, which ones you want, and why you want them (i.e. what goals do you want to achieve?).
    For me, my 2023 credit card strategy has 4 parts: CHASE credit cards, CORE credit cards, SUPPLEMENTARY credit cards, and NEW credit cards.
    The overall focus will be primarily on cash back credit cards and secondarily on travel credit cards.
    For CHASE credit cards, I’ll be using the Chase Freedom Flex as often as I can. That’s because the Chase Freedom calendar allows you to earn 5% cash back (issued as Chase Ultimate Rewards points) in useful, everyday categories that change every 3 months. Since you can earn at the 5% rate on up to $1,500 in spend per quarter, that’s 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points alone! There’s also the Shop through Chase portal and Chase Refer a Friend program to earn even more.
    For CORE credit cards, I’ll be using my American Express cards (Amex Platinum for Schwab, Amex Gold, Amex Green, Amex Blue Business Plus) as my main 4, plus some additional cash back credit cards with no annual fee. Since I redeem my Amex Membership Rewards points for cash back into my Schwab brokerage account, it makes for a great cash back setup.
    For SUPPLEMENTARY credit cards, these are the ones I use for more isolated situations. I use airline credit cards (currently just the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select) for perks / benefits, but not for spend; hotel credit cards for the same reason, but also for spending directly at hotels; and miscellaneous cards for select airport lounge access, individual retailers (e.g. using my U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card for Costco and Target), and for other reasons like when I want 1 credit card for everything.
    For NEW credit cards, there are currently 8 on my radar, one of which is the BILT credit card.

      I get the idea of why people don’t like statement credits…but why not redeem for statement credit and then take that cash out of your checking and into a separate account. It’s functionally identical.

    Hey Mark, I can answer your questions about the Paypal CC since I have it, it is indeed issued by Synchrony bank but it is managed through the Paypal app/website, the cashback shows up instantly after your transaction has posted, and it is redeemed to your paypal balance, after that you can transfer it directly to your bank, although you have to have at least $1 to redeem your cashback from the card to your paypal balance. Overall, very solid card when paying via paypal.

      @MarkReese  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Clausell - getting a card without a sign-up bonus can still make sense. I've done it myself with the Amex Gold Card and Capital One SavorOne. However, just because I (or others) have done it, doesn't mean you should or should not. Look at the ongoing rewards, benefits, etc. Then look at the cost (i.e. annual fee) vs. the value _you personally would get._ If the value outweighs the cost, then it can make sense.

    For your curiosity, the PayPal Cashback Mastercard is managed through PayPal. The cashback is earned when the charge is posted and has to be redeemed to PayPal balance with no minimum requirement. One thing to note is that if you pay by PayPal, it will choose to use the PayPal balance first so make sure you move it somewhere else right after redeeming since paying via the balance doesn't generate any rewards. Unfortunately there is no longer a SUB for this card.
    As for myself, I probably should pick up the Amazon Prime Rewards card. I have a BOA Customized Cash and Platinum Honors for wholesale clubs and online purchases, but I have recently been going over the $2500/quarter limit so I need to spread out the spending. For other cards I have no plans unless I see a good SUB and the card makes sense for me to have.

    If you don’t have Schwab, you can get a Amex Checkjng account and that gets you cash back at 0.8c per point instead of the 0.6c per point for a statement credit. Benefit is that you can transfer the cash out of the checking account too.

      That said, any of them can work well for all types of travel.
      If you want to use 1 card system for now, I recommend researching topics like "How to fly to [name of place] with points and miles." hey mark off topic question I been meaning to get a card to use on Amazon purchase. What do you think is better the Amex prime business or the prime chase visa? Or do you have any other cc recommendations that are 5% or better for online purchases like Amazon. Thanks

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both the Amex and the Chase options will give you 5%. However, a couple things to keep in mind...
      1. Amex generally allows around 5 credit card products per person, meaning the Amex version will use up one of those slots. On the positive side, as an Amex business card, it will not show up on your personal credit report & therefore not count towards your 5/24 status with Chase.
      2. Chase does not have a known limit to how many card products you can get. Getting this version, therefore, would not use up one of your Amex slots. However, Chase does have the 5/24 Rule, and since this is a personal card, opening it would increase your 5/24 count.
      An alternative card to look into is the U.S. Bank Shopper Cash Rewards Visa Signature card. It has a $0 annual fee in Year 1 (then $95 starting in Year 2) and can earn 6% at Amazon while also not using up an Amex slot. Opening this card will increase your 5/24 count.
      There's no right or wrong here, rather, just a few options with things to consider based on what you care about.

    Why so many Marriott?
    Are their fees justified?
    Must you earn them before RC card request?
    Does United or AA offer a Reserve level card that grants seat upgrades and priority boarding beyond group 4? Bilt is the truth, especially on the 1st.

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. The fees are justified for me. Each Marriott card offers 'free' night certificate.
      2. You only need 1 Chase Marriott card to request the Ritz card.
      3. No card from United or AA exists like that.

    Point me towards your Chase Ink referral, if you have one. If the 90k Ink Business Cash offers stays around about until mid-February, then I'll try for it. I just got the 90k Ink Unlimited on 1/1, so I'm trying to space it out a bit, given the 1/30 rule and that Chase seems a little picky about velocity with their business cards.

    I recommend you getting Ink Preferred instead of Amex Green. Also get more Custom Cashes, this will eliminate Amex Gold. I eliminated most of my Amex cards, except Hilton and BBP. I still have Business Gold, which I got last year to pay the taxes (and get a bonus), but it's on a chopping block, since Ink Preferred and Wyndham Business beat it big time for my needs. I have Paypal card, got it just in case, and there was a small bonus, but don't use it, since I have a better card, which earns more than 3% on everything, and has no AF and no FTF. I also like USB AR, one of the best cards on the market.

      Same here. Here's the latest from the MaxRewards team:
      "...banks don't have official APIs where we can access rewards, offers, credit scores, and other data points that we show and that our members love. Therefore, we have had to build our own connectors. At times, the banks make changes without warning, and those changes trickle down to use and affect our ability to sync accounts."

    Mark, I have a son and a friend living at my house and wondering if they apply for a credit card, can they include my income on the application? My son is currently unemployed, but I am paying his expenses. Our friend has a job, and is covering their own expenses. Can my income be counted in those situations? I'm trying to get my son his first non authorized user card, and some better cards for our friend.

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Shawn - I'm going to defer to the banks on this & let you decide what to do.
      For example, here's what Citi says on their applications...
      _"Total Annual Income, examples: Salary, wages, interest, dividends, rental income, retirement benefits. If you are 21 or older, you may include income from others that you can reasonably access to pay your bills. You do not have to include alimony, child support, or separate maintenance income if you do not want it considered as a basis for repaying this obligation."_
      Read what each application says is allowed & then proceed from there 👍

    If you have the AmEx Platinum and the BBP then there's virtually no reason to have the Green. With your BBP, you get 2X minimum with whatever you charge on it; therefore, your real return with the Green in the categories which you use it (transit and non-chain hotels) is 1X. $150 divided by 1% is $15,000. That means you need to spend at least $15,000 on transit and non-chain hotels to make having the Green worth the $150; recalling, of course, that you get your Clear from Platinum. Once I did that math, I dumped my Green as soon as the year 2 AF hit. The BBP sets a great floor, which means cards like Gold and Platinum need to be bringing the thunder to add them to your wallet. Which, as well all know, they do.

    Hey Mark, great video. Since you mentioned liking to fly through American. Shell / Fuel rewards has an affiliation with American Airlines so when you use a designated card you can earn AA miles, also check out American’s e-dining and e-shopping options so that when you use a linked card you can earn AA miles….e.g. when I bought TYCB for my kids with a linked card I earned AA miles, it wasn’t a lot but better than nothing and everything adds up over time.

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Ryan! Yep, I linked my Shell / AA accounts 1-2 years back and also tried the dining program for a time. I no longer use them as I found them inconvenient, but they're definitely a good idea for those who want to earn more AA miles ✈️
