Great win for Lee, after being defeated 11 times straight. Considering I am gonna be at the venue tomorrow to watch the quarters live, I am a little disappointed to not see FZD, but I am for sure rooting for Lee now

Perfect tactics! Lee stays right at the table. Short strokes. Flip. Because as soon as you retreat to middle distance, Fan will destroy you in the rallies. If you stay close, and are able to initiate, you may not need the middle distance. A classic game plan from decades ago still can be used in 2023 if you have the short distance skills. Lee does. And he deserves his famous win!
What a save at 8:25. It was so close to going to a game 5 but a very composed return after a netball sealed it

One of the best matches I've evwr seen. The last few points by Lee are absolutely insane in how all of them were precisely aimed rozht to the corner, right off the serve.

Ever since winning the second World Championship title in Durban, Fan Zhendong has been off form. He has since lost to Lin Gaoyuan in WTT Zagreb, Ma Long in Asian Championship, Wang Chuqin in Asian Games and now this. Even at WTT Ljubljana, he only won by a hair's margin 12-10 in the deciding game, helped a lot by lucky net balls.
I don't think it is because he playing bad though, he is would number 1 and the biggest favorite in the chinese team to go to olympics in 2024 winning the big events after ma long (next to WQC), everyone inside the chinese team and even more so outside the chinese team will be watching him and thinking of every possible way to beat him. Staying on top is incredibly difficult
It is incredibly difficult to bh flick an underspin serve, and FZD avoids it like the plague, so instead, he returns the serve with a soft touch and Lee Sang Su was ready to take advantage with a ferocious flick.
@ttg7800 No. I mean the backhand flick. You will notice that when FZD receives most serves from Lee Sang Su, he he did so with a passive receive, and that gave too much opening to Lee SS who attacked it again, and again.
Wang Chuqin or Lim Jonghoon would have attacked the underspin serve with a bh flick - FZD failed to do this. It is a kink, a wrinkle, in his otherwise flawless game.
@@CMCMTTTV The forehand flick is the dragon's breath. It is nigh on impossible to execute against a backspin serve....... our maybe I should say that it yields very mixed results.

Not gonna lie, something was off about Fan. Might be something Lee was doing so credit to him but FZD did not look aggressive all match.

I have the feeling that F. Zhendong is not in good shape, he made a lot of mistakes on his own. But without taking away from Lee, he has very fast and accurate balls. Much better.
Fat Zhendong lost because Fat Zhendong is not FAT, but he just plays like someone who IS . . . says a "fan" of Fat Zhendong who thinks Fat Zhendong is not . . . FAT.
Its nice to see that FZD is human and can be off form. He couldnt serve short to save his life. We have all gone through that in a tournament. Lol

Fan is struggling lately. When you he wins, it's because of his mental because the scoreline are very close. Lee has improved a lot in that matter and his serves are harder to attack and he has better attacks and placement.

Even though Lee played extremely well, the biggest factor that might contribute to Fan's loss is the hurricane rubber.
We all know about those 3 things that keep Hurricane 3 the best rubber in the GAME:
1. 3 days a change, 1 day a change when playing tournaments (According to CNT)
2. Requires oil boost, soften the sponge and increase the elasticity of the rubber (This is legal by ITTF rules, they banned organic glues not oil)
3. Good Techniques to go with it, Chinese techniques that requires full arm swing and short ball control
By achieving those 3 things, Hurricane 3 exceeds ANY rubber in the game. Whether it is speed, control, or the most important spin.
The cold weather and temperature in Frankfurt makes the hurricane 3 sponge dead, not elastic enough to absorb the ball. Therefore, you can see Fan's serve isn't as good as before. Lee can just flick almost every underspin short ball that Fan serves with no pressure.
Other Chinese players who appeared dominant before also lost.
I think there are still ways to solve this problem with hurricane rubber, maybe using a heater or hot water packet to heat up the sponge a little to keep it elastic. Let's see what CNT coaches do.
This also proves my point that Hurricane 3 isn't a good rubber for us normal players. (If you have Chinese techniques or want to learn Chinese techniques though, Hurricane is still your best choice.)
