seeing them live is a good clue. I think they take a theme, like Foxy Lady or some Gong riff, and jam it--blast it--play it until they are all locked together, and can start doing it at the drop of a hat. I've seen them on the first show of a tour, when it felt very formulaic--then middle, toward end of tour, when they really transcend individuality and pauses between songs--all of that--and create one gigantic, morphing, deafening experience which requires a hypnotized audience as much as their unbroken focus.
this was the first cd I owned by them, right before the first time I saw them. Seemed like out of nowhere I was getting heavy into Black Sabbath.
