    I would like to thank you for sharing this with us Power BI users. I have this report that I’m developing and it’s driving me nuts due to millions of records. I am glad I found your video to solve my problem with slicers. Instead of putting everything in one fact table to achieve the same result, I was looking for ways to modify the relationship but failed. This is a neat trick. You saved me a lot of time! Thank you again! God bless you.

    Thank you. I didn't think to do that before. I had been using the Edit interactions feature instead. I notice both methods still leave the artifact of whatever slicer you had selected below, so if you'd had a different airline up and made a selection, then when you switched to one that didn't have any claims greater than 0 for that selection, it still shows because it's selected. I wish there was a behavior that stopped that or cleared selections.

    I have been doing this without knowing if it was best practice. In order to limit a slicer based on a very large list (+1000 elements) in my dimensions table, when there's is maybe 700 of these elements in the facts table and want to hide those 300 empty elements on the slicer. It works beautifully! Thanks Patrick for showing us the way 👍

    I think this solves a long standing filter problem I’ve had with a map where a “state” filter should filter a “city” filter and only show the cities corresponding to that state. Can’t wait to try this out.

    Hi, after a particular selection, if we change the Airline, the Claims list refreshes per the Airline but also shows the previously selected value (from the previously selected Airline). May be this is the default behavior of the slicers. But how do we avoid this?

    This is amazing. I am new to this but from what i understand on the internet, directional crossfiltering can be a huge risk and people are using that just to have a dimension filtered based on selection of another dimension. But this can be so easily done with method you shown. Why are people not looking at it then i wonder.

    Hi Patrick, how about drill through filters applied to the report where you drilled and the actual filters of that report? I want to be able to use the report filters (ex the store and date filter) and when I drill to that report from another one I want the filters coming from the other report to "overwrite" the previous filters. To sum up, I want to reset all filters and apply filters of drill through coming from the other report. How to do that?

    Hi Patrick. Love your videos. I wonder if there's a way to apply relative date filter (using the filters pane) to a date slicer set to "between". The filter on slicer approach doesn't work with the date filter.
    The use case is the user wants to default the report to the last 14 days while still having the ability to select a custom date range using the date slicer. Would love to know your thoughts and ways to deal with this.

    Hey this is great content and thank you for all the information you provided through your channel.
    With regard to his video, I understand that you are filtering out claims equals zero. But what if say instead of claims, it's another categorical filter that has to show only relevant values based on the first filter?
    Tableau has a feature called "show relevant values" . I'm looking for something similar.
    Please respond.

    Thanks for making the video, I was glad when they finally made this possible! One thing though what I really mis is that a "deep dive" video about what can go wrong with using bidirectional relationships, because usually I only read/hear that "just don't do it!", but no "real life scenarios" (the only thing I could think of is date related stuff which can easily break with bidirectional relationships). Any plan to make a video on that? Invite one of the 2 DAX gods maybe? :)

      Lets say that we have table for accounts and another one for regions. Then we have 2 fact tables. One for actuals and one for forecast. Both fact tables are using accounts and regions.
      It is fine to create that model with single direction relationships. Dictionary tables are filtering fact tables.
      With both direction selected these will go into a loop and Power BI will be confused what is filtering what. Selection on region will filter accounts and accounts will filter back regions. If there are different region combinations within 2 fact tables you are doomed.

      @mcnater 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I 100% agree on this. I've worked with Qlikview for a decade and bi-directional is the Default way. I too wish they'd show more WHY they think it's such a bad idea in cases to not use bi-directional.

    • @mateuszhanczuk2043
      @mateuszhanczuk2043 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I remember correctly Qlik handles bi directional collisions by creating virtual table with synthetic keys automatically inside data model. Power BI gives more control over shape of the model so it does not do that by itself.

    Thank you for all the great videos! So for slicers to properly work, you need a unique, one way relationship between tables? Let's say you had an address table, and then a table with orders that contained cities and states...you cannot relate the two fields...you need somehow to come up with a composite field/key?

I want my visual interaction to filter a slicer. currently a visual interaction filters all of the other tables but does not filter my slicer. As far as I know, it doesn't work that way but I don't understand why. in fact, in visual interactions, when i edit them the slicer shows up with a filter or dont filter Icon. why would there be an icon for filtering the slicer if it doesn't work? Is there a reason you can filter other visuals through visual interactions but cannot filter a slicer through visual interactions?

    I am trying to sync slicers from two tables both consisting of month and Year in the same format. But I would like one slicer to filter two different tables. Been trying things that are getting messy and would not be able to even explain what I have done. But essentially I had two slicers (slicer1, Slicer2)each pulling in the year,month from the two different tables. One page has has slicer1 and filters table2. Page two has Slicer2 and table2 but I want Slicer1 to filter Slicer2... hope that makes sense. Table1 and table2 have a relationship between them.
    Not sure if I am not doing it right. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Patrick
    Thank you very much for the video. But I have a new challenge, how can I filter a slicer with the selection of a bar from a chart?
    For example: I have a slicer with products and I have a bar chart with the quantities of products sold per store. If I choose a store, I would like the slicer to be reduced to only the products that store sold.
    All the data comes from the same table.
    Is this possible?

    Patrick, I've found that the conditions that we can use on the Filter Pane can't use a measure that returns a boolean. These measures have to return a number. Any idea why? Let's take your example. If we created a helper measure that would return True if there were any claims for the selected claim site and False otherwise, we could not use this intuitive measure in the Filter Pane. We would have to turn True into 1 and False to 0 to be able to use it in there... I don't like it to be honest because it's not intuitive.

    What is in that measure tho? I don't follow it. #claims measure?

    Hi guys I only see the options:

    But I don't have the option:

    What should I do?
