      Covid did that to me. It really messed with my sense of time passing for myself, for events, for everything. I feel I aged 2-3 years each year we were home from work, and yet I also feel no time passed at all.
      Sadly, still 17 years away from retirement.

      @@triciac.5078 Interesting! I felt the opposite way during covid - because the repetitive, insular nature of how weeks went by made time feel like it was going faster, I feel like I should've aged about 6 months over the course of a year and a half. I honestly still sometimes accidentally call myself a year or two younger than I actually am because it doesn't feel like that. But I'm 28, I think my experience with it was much more common with young people

    It makes me kinda sad that tumblr is going down. It's such a good fandom space, and it feels like the old internet in a good way. It truly is a hellsite (affectionate) unlike twitter which is a hellsite (derogatory)

      as an active user it's still a perfectly fine place for community, better than pretty much anywhere else because of how well you can curate your experience there. Nerdfighteria had a bit of a bad name there back around the time John got bullied off of it, but these days that attitude has mostly reversed and I feel like vlogbrothers could really have a presence there

    • @Rayowag
      @Rayowag ปีที่แล้ว +15

      True, but I also feel like the vibe of the hellsite switched in a way where fandom is definitely fun, but active fandom of specific TH-camrs just kinda feels off on there.

    • @KayleeDavisBlueBox
      @KayleeDavisBlueBox ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I think that gets true a lot as you get older, bc age gaps mean less and less with time, when we're all adults, often in a fairly similar place in life. The difference between a 45 and a 55 year old is negligible; the difference between a 15 and a 25 is staggering, not to mention 5 and 15

      I wonder what can be done to improve the word cloud to be easily analyzed for certain recurring themes like the book recs and names. I'd say fuzzy matching combined with something else? Looks like an interesting problem. NLP is so advanced these days it's definitely possible.

    • @lutilda
      @lutilda ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maimee1 Yeah, the tough thing with word clouds is that they both only work on single words and aren't able to combine the same ideas that use different wording (ex: "Pizza John" and "PizzaJohn" are not counted as the same thing). Using machine learning you can have it process "n nearest neighbors" rather than just single words, which would help. Leveraging Chat GPT into a.machine learning algorithm to pull topics from each answer and then making a word cloud of those topics would probably be the best method. But it would also require a human to categorize a large part of the comments for the topics to teach the algorithm what output we want.
      Definitely a fun thought experiment. 😂

    I always love watching the census analyses, although I at some point always get angry because I have so many things to say in response to what you take away from the answers! But you can't hear me! :D
    The one thing I do want to reply to is your question as to why some people have never been awesome socks club members. I am in University (in Germany) and I don't really have a regular income. I do get some money from the government (for studying, half is a loan, the other half is a gift) which barely pays for my monthly expenses. I do occasionally work and have some extra income that way, but I don't have the money to regularly spend a lot on fancy socks. That's also why I didn't buy your cancer socks - they look absolutely amazing but they are simply too expensive for me.

    You were mentioning the Awesome Socks Club and related things. The biggest hinderance to me for subscribing is, like, I don't need that many socks. 🤣 That's why quarterly is appealing. 4 pairs of socks per year? That's right at the barrier of "this is about right" and "this is almost too many," so it makes subscribing more tempting.

  • @kaspianepps7946
    @kaspianepps7946 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I don't remember how the question was worded, but it's possible people interpreted a quarterly subscription to the Awesome Socks Club as meaning you get one pair of socks every quarter, rather than three pairs.
    I have enough socks that getting 12 more a year would be too many, but with wear and tear and the washing machine eating a few I do still need to buy socks sometimes. So a subscription for four pairs a year would be ideal - you could let people choose which of the three monthly designs they wanted on a first come first served basis or just send a random design out of the three.

I've not been a member of the club for very long, but my socks drawer is already filling up at an alarming rate, which makes me think I'll have to stop my subscription soon. If it was a pair every 3 months, I could see myself being an indefinite subscriber, since it it m uch closer to the rate at which I wear out socks!

    Hey, Hank! Regarding Awesome [insert awesome product] Club(s), I think more details/transparency for those of us who are extra big nerds about those things would be great! I've browsed both sites in the past, but struggled to find much about sourcing of materials (both), construction and seams (socks), factory conditions (socks), certs (both), farms (coffee), growing and processing specs (coffee), etc. I know the products are *good* products made well by people who care for meaningful causes, but I-and I can only imagine many others-could really be swayed by all the nerdy specifics to help us understand just how high-quality or sustainable these products are. For every detail I can't find, I tend to assume the answer is deliberately omitted because it is less than ideal. If I can learn how the nitty-gritty of the socks compares to Smartwool or Bombas, or how the nitty-gritty of the coffee compares to what I can find on Trade or in a local roaster, I'm much likelier to become a member, and I would hazard a guess the same goes for those like me. Thanks!

    As a person who has more difficulty seeing than the average bear, I want to point out that there is sometimes text on the screen, and I usually miss it.
    First, I have to notice that it's peeking out behind the CC captions, and turn the captions off to try and see what you wrote. And it's often very tiny, not high contrast, and sometimes in serif font which is less legible for me, and it's not oncreen for very long. If I want to work hard, I can try and rewind, lower playback speed, and try to pause that exact moment to see if I can decipher it.
    When I do catch it, it appears to usually consist of commentary or corrections added in during editing. But I don't know how important it is until I decide to try deciphering it.
    But if you find those words important enough to add to the video, may I suggest editing in a spoken version of it? (I guess if it's just a tiny correction or something, you could put that in a pinned comment. Well, I guess all edited-in text could be duplicated in a pinned comment.)
    And if you do still want to (also) edit in any text onscreen, please make sure the text is large and high contrast and sans-serif and at the top of the screen so it isn't obscured by CC captions, and leave it up on the screen longer than you thought it needed to be up in order for people to read and process it.
    I also use captions, and I have it set up with the right colors, font, and contrast that I need.
    Thank you so much for captioning your videos with human-edited captions!
    One more note: In this video, you read part of a comment where someone asked for the captions to be better synchronized and you mentioned baked-in captions. Baked-in captions can sometimes be done well, but the user has no control over the font, size, color, or contrast, like we do with the TH-cam CC settings. So my vote is to do your best to synchronize the TH-cam CC, with just a couple lines of text on screen at a time.
    I hope that these tips are helpful. I watch and enjoy every vlogbrothers video, and the videos on your separate channels. And I appreciate your content so much. Thanks.

      I was honestly plesantly surprised at how high both the enby & agender percentages were! Also the fact that asexual was the third highest group in the sexuality question! Represent!

    I love the census, it's so interesting. I've been here since 2008 and been doing the census since it started. Looking forward to the new one!

    I did not expect to hear Hank try to pronounce a Māori name in this video (Whangamomona) but I am here for it 😂 Also TIL there was a republic declared there, and I'm a kiwi!

    I feel very lucky to have been in high school when you made content for high schoolers, and in college when you made videos for college students, and in the “world” now :) one of those things that makes me think about how my consciousness just happens to exist during this exact blip of the universe, and I will never know what it would feel like to be aware during a different time like before X rays and vaccines or before vlogbrothers

    For the employment question I'd love to see it split up for students specifically. So the regular "do you like your job" types but also maybe whether full or part time

    When I saw the title I was like SURELY there's a typo in there... I like the thoughts others have said about a less frequent sock club. The main reason I haven't signed up is because I can go for YEARS without buying socks, so I definitely don't need twelve new pairs a year.
    Also, shout out to my fellow tea drinkers who don't really understand it. It's warm and it tastes fine to good, that's all I need to know!

    "other audio" is probably Libby, where you can borrow audiobooks from the library. Or other library apps. It also probably accounts for a lot of the people who are using the library.

    1:01:03 Well said. As I've aged and learned ever more broadly (and in a few cases deeply) I've become less and less certain about nearly all of the "solutions" I used to so confidently proclaim and advocate for in my youth. That doesn't mean I've stopped believing in assertive action in protection of others or forceful support of my chosen values … but the wise undertake all that with deliberation & caution. I'm old enough now to look back and know how wrong I sometimes was … how inaccurate & simplistic my views used to be, back when I was certain. I've come to believe (kicking and screaming) that certainty is actually something of a red flag.

    I'll keep brainstorming visual accessibility suggestions that aren't currently being implemented. And I need a snazzy calendar now, shoot.
    When Crash Course is too fast, people can turn down the speed of TH-cam vids! I didn't figure out the speed up/slow down mechanic for a long time.
