The F1 scrapheap bargain that transformed Williams

  • Whatever Williams is paying Alex Albon this year, and it’s probably just a few million dollars, is one of the best investments it has made given his performances transformed its 2023 season.
The 27-year-old single-handedly took Williams to seventh place in the constructors’ championship, delivering premium performance for a bargain bin price.
That’s important because championship position dictates a team’s prize money. And although the exact figures won’t be definitive until F1’s 2023 revenues are finalised, we know that every position in the constructors’ championship is worth around ten million dollars, give or take.
Most would have predicted Williams would finish last for a second consecutive year. That means Albon’s contribution is worth in the neighbourhood of thirty million dollars.
So he’s worth his weight in gold to Williams - actually, at current prices more than six times his weight in gold. Given what he’s paid that’s a return of in the region of 1000 percent.

He cannot, you need to be the works team to be on top. In the last 30 years, only 3 or 4 times non-works teams have won the title or the cup. Red Bull-Renault twice and Benneton-Renault in 1995. (Maybe I missed something)

Alot of casual fans see Perez finishing in better positions and thi k he was better than Alex. But when Alex was in the car, Max wasn't winning by 30+ seconds.
Max could pull out a win every once in a while in 2020, but he was mostly finishing well behind the Mercs in P3. So yeah, Perez is finishing higher, but the current RB is also much faster.

Even as a crazy fanatical supporter of Alex, I have to admit that his performance in 2023 shocked me. I always thought he was a solid driver who could do well in a car that suited him, but I did not expect him to drag Williams to P7 in the Constructor's Championship. He jas really taken this second chance and ran with it.
Obviously, I think the team did well to make a better car than in year's past. And James Vowles giving them some stability and confidence in the paddock also helped quite a bit. Williams as a whole is on the rise and I am happy to see this. I've been a Williams fan since Nigel Mansell was driving for them in the early 90's so seeing them rise back up is fun to watch.

    • @stayfrost04
      @stayfrost04 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Along with Budget Cap on how much teams can spend every year, there is a separate cap on Capital Expenditure (Capex) similarly on a sliding scale keeping in view that top teams already have best facilities. It exists so that bigger teams don't just simply divert what they would've spent on the team towards building even better facilities thus giving them a performance advantage. Capex includes things like Wind Tunnel construction, buying more manufacturing and tooling machines to make multiples of the same part quicker, or unlock a new manufacturing capability etc. Recently it was increased for the lower teams with the view that they're already multiple years behind if not decade or two behind the rest in their quality of infrastructure, so the new increase allows the smaller team to spend more on such facilities to catch up.

I don't think Alex is going to be demanding a huge salary increase despite his ability to. I don't see that in his personality nor in his largely Buddhist philosophy. Williams would be daft to not offer him a pay raise however, if they intend to keep him for the near term. Williams has begun to brand themselves as a team that can develop drivers and offer them a drivable car that can deliver midfield performance from the back of the pack. I expect Logan to follow in Alex's footsteps and this will allow Williams to spend more on developing the car into a strong mid-field performer. We see the same kind of process in many other sports where there is a pay cap. Anything you don't spend on your star athlete you can spend on supporting that star athlete perform above their weight.

Williams will need to match or beat all the other offers Albon gets. Alex would be crazy to take less -- Buddhist or no. His top earnings years are limited; he needs to think of his future.

Unless Williams show ambition next year Albon should leave. I dint rate him as highly as some people seem to (because I think Logan was horrendous). But I do think hes showing that he should be near the front if not in a podium challenging team.

If I'm Albon (truly, one of my favourite drivers), I'm thinking that 2024 will be a definitive season in my career. 2023 showed everyone I'm a top-10 driver. If the FW46 makes the kind of leap that the AMR23 made in 2023, I might be willing to sign something long-term with Williams. Otherwise, let's see what opportunities there are in the top half of the field. Either way, Alex, I'm rooting for you.

I think Albon will stick with Williams there is nowhere else for him to go at the moment. All the best teams have drivers and plenty of young talent not to make it worth a risk.
AT after moving to Milton Keynes will basically become a training ground for RBR drivers. Audi will go with two known options and other potentials will appear. Hopefully 2024 will bring enough points and some sponsorship cash for Dev.

1:12 is leclerc inclusion an engagement bait?
there's no way in hell leclerc was the third best driver of 2023, the top 4 and their positions are pretty locked
besides that and george that shouldn't been on the list, the other inclusions and their places aren't too much outrageous

Let's not forget Albon could've been a race winner if Hamilton didn't bump him off the track, actually potentially a double race winner if Hamilton didn't bump him off again (although the second time wasn't as likely).

I know this is about Albon.....and yet when you show the whole field in a race you did not show Sargent on the list. There are 20 drivers in F1, no 19. Even if he is last, he should be shown on the list.

As good as Albon was you simply cannot credit him with the teams improved performance. It's directly the result of James Vowels who came in, made the upgrade and only THEN was the Williams competitive. Only then could Albon score points.
As an ex karting driver I can you the hard reality is this: the best car wins, not the best driver. The car and it's engineers is what wins races. Without a good car the driver is just a passenger.
If the entire field all had the RB19 Max would not be winning every weekend. Literally you'd have a different winner every race.

The fact that F1 and the teams are shunning Andretti despite major manufacturer backing and the poor performance of everyone down grid especially Williams, Haas, etc. says all it needs to say about the Andretti outfit. People at the top and mid-field are worried, if it was another Haas or Williams they wouldn't mind. What a bunch of gate-keeping twats. You don't mind an American team if it's last and barely hanging on, but one who will do more is suddenly a problem.

I'll say the quiet part out loud....
Alex isn't that good, but Logan is a lot worse.
The Williams had very decent speed compared to Haaz and AlphaTauri. Charles, Lewis or Max would have scored a podium in that car.
Logan is worse than Nyck de Vries, but they keep Logan because he is USA
