  • Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. Together they make up the Seven Deadly Sins. But where do they come from, what are there origins?
    In this video, we'll explore the origin and history of the Seven Deadly Sins ( sometimes also known as the Seven Cardinal Sins or Vices), as well as the concept of sin at large. You may be surprise to learn that they do not come from the Bible - well, not as a strict list as we now have it. They may have come from an Egyptian monk, known as Evagrius of Pontus and taken up by Pope Gregory I. But they certainly gained traction after Dante's Divine Comedy, notably Inferno and Purgatorio.
    I really hope you enjoy watching this video. with another algorithm spike, things have been really stirring on the channel lately, so welcome all new subscribers. We're at 149k now, absurd! Thank you all for your kind comments :)

Not sure how recent the addition of 3 more is, or his source for that. Also, even more common would be the 3 Theological Virtues: faith, hope, and love. Those you surely heard about.

      That's your opinion. My opinion is that he should have eradicated every last one of his competition. And he could have easily done so, but, as a religious person, due to his father, he believed there's something after this life and that it will reward him for not getting revenge on all those who wronged him. You think that he wasn't humble just because of some shitty movies about him? Think again. He held his ego in check so much so that I wonder would we even remember Einstein or Hawking or any of the scientists we studied in school. None of them ever gave us practical usage of anything at all, and we praise them to be geniuses compared to the people who invented the helicopter, the wheel and fire? I am sad for being a part of this twisted global mentality. But most of all, I'm ashamed of getting angry at a person whom, first of all, I do not know, and is stupid enough to say anything harsh and critical about a person who could have destroyed us all if that was his inclination.

    • @weneedmoreconsideratepeopl4006
      @weneedmoreconsideratepeopl4006 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Julez O'Neil he was the master of inventions and electricity at the time. He had power, wealth, and influence combined.
      But he didn't turn out abusive like Edison when it came to competitors or startups. Edison took credit for his early works (with no grand reward like he promised), filed false lawsuits, electrocuted animals, burned his laboratory... all just to keep his innovations down. Sir Tesla could have eradicated or ruined Edison just for those alone but he didn't- he focused on his inventions. And when he realized his dear friend and greatest supporter would go bankrupt because of his rapid success, Sir Tesla broke off his contract with him so the friend could keep the money that should've went to him. He basically had the integrity of Christ.. I guess that's why he was able to make miracles happen and why his name is getting known despite being kept under wraps for a century or two.

      @Julez O'Neil The businessman was Sir Westinghouse who financed Sir Tesla. He got his big break there. Also what do you mean by framed?
      Are you gonna pretend that the AC-powered electric chair didn't exist and wasn't Edison's idea? Odd that he would use AC when his company used DC. I wonder why then hmm... If anyone was doing the framing, you have Edison to look up to for that.

    • @Stroggoii
      @Stroggoii 4 ปีที่แล้ว +141

      Sloth is a mistranslation of Ascedia. The disinterest and inaction towards securing your daily upkeep and necessities. Not sleeping, not eating, not cleaning yourself, not seeking sustenance. Letting yourself go.
      So yes, cruel as it may be, depression is a deadly sin.

    • @jaytea4390
      @jaytea4390 4 ปีที่แล้ว +90

      God judges perfectly and there's a big difference between laziness and depression. If somebody is really struggling with depression and therefore doesn't end up doing as much as they could've in their life, God isn't going to send them to hell for 'sloth'. He sees our lives as a whole. Edit: also now that I think about it, most likely 'sloth' back then didn't mean 'non-productivity' as we see it today (as in, not wanting to work stupidly long shifts at a job your hate or devote your entire life to studying etc), but more unwillingness to do God's work. So not bothering to help those in need. Also work culture back then would've been a lot different from nowadays. So sloth should probably be understood as actual laziness and unwillingness to do anything to help others and not genuine burnout or depression. Since let's face it, if 'work' means slaving away at a store for 60 hours a week, you can't be surprised when people don't want to work.

    • @jocycruz9532

      If you think about it people that are lazy are usually affected by low self esteem which also causes us to procrastinate because we think that we won’t be able to do it right and we think that we are going to fail which makes us sad and not want to do anything because we think we are failures

    Having “Sadness” as a sin (where sadness is putting yourself in a sort of purgatory, pun intended, by thinking back to bad times instead of being mindful and present) sounded like an incredibly important thing to keep on the list to make people aware of that damaging temptation that we can all get stuck in.

    Thank you for this video. The seven deadly sins is a theme I have thought about a lot lately, without really searching for any background info. So this video did arrive to a kind of a need. The mind, body and spirit have seven different combinations. The saddest thing right now is our collective disconnection from the spirit. So, with our powerful minds and bodies, we do result most often to the most destructive sin, greed. The other sins derive from other kinds of disconnections within the trilogy. But this is just my very unprofessional View, and I wish to hear more outlooks.

    These 7 sins are called "deadly" because they delineate the mortal realm. If you are truly free from all of them, then the heavens have no reason to burden you with mortality. That is why people with a "calling" as it used to be called, devoted their entire lives to cultivate themselves, to free their hearts and minds of any thoughts of wrath, lust, gluttony, greed, envy, pride and sloth - a lifelong endeavor. To aim for the impossible is quite a feat, but then again, people are known for achieving the impossible.
    Which is why saints or holy figures in both East and West are depicted with an aureola surrounding them; they've attained a space and state of being where no human sin is able to touch them.

      True. We may eventually exhibit all of these sins, but there's a level to how each individual does so.
      Sometimes it's a good thing as well. To be greedy, to be prideful, to be a glutton, and to be full of wrath.
      It seems like management and moderation is the best way to counter "overdosing".
