- My camera is having a hard time synching up with an old lens that I have. I get and err 01 and it tells me that there is a faulty communication between the camera and the lens and that i need to clean the lens contacts, the camera is a Canon 600d (T3i)

I have watched several videos before yours and got no solution what-so-ever.
Thank you for the "Aperture" tip - it solved my Err 01 problem right away.
I had the same issue using an original Canon lens. I had tried cleaning contacts, removing battery etc to no avail. It had started happening occasionally and then ended up being a constant issue to the point where I couldn't get shots I wanted anymore.
I finally saw Charlotte Mayhew's comment at the beginning of this thread about setting the camera to AV mode and taking a couple shots at highest f stop possible for your camera model. This immediately fixed the problem for me it seems. I will have to spend some more time with it but apparently it is now working again. I actually think it was a shutter timing issue and maybe this "resets" it.
Thanks Charlotte!
The error message 1 comes from aperture size. I've noticed this by testing my sigma lens on my camera. At F34 it will not take a picture but when a lower aperture is set say 5.6 it has no problem. So I think you were right in what you were saying. It may have something to do with the amount of light going into the camera and the only way the camera can deal with this is by sending you an error message 1. Thanks for uploading this.
@arnoldgd84 that's strange because the canon lens shouldn't have any problems. I wouldn't do any excessive cleaning on the contacts because they are sensitive, but that is really surprising on an "L" lens.
The message is fairly clear, "clean the lens contacts." Did you try it?
this happens to dedicated lenses aswell its not a budget lens issue it is a fault with the lens, inside there are several ribon cables 1 of them (in this case) the aperature cable has failed, the only fix is a replacement cable, there are several companies offering a repair service on ebay for around £40.
My Cannon EOS 60D keeps giving Err 01. Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contact. I have cleansed the lens contac severally yet, no postive response
@WeAreROGS No I haven't fixed it.. this is more of a "work-around" than anything. i just keep it on it's lowest F setting
hi! any suggestions on how to fix error communication between the camera and lens? when i take a photograph, it says that I need to clean the lens. I followed the steps as what I've watched in the video but it didn't work.
what should I do?
hope you can help me with this.
I came across this video trying to solve a similar problem and found that switching the camera to AV mode and shooting at highest possible f value (f32 in my case) actually fixed the problem.
I have a T2i and I just bought Kenko 3x converter and a canon 100-300mm L lens. Both items are EF not EF-S. The L lens works fine by itself. Combined will work in manual mode because there is not enough light coming into the lens combination.
Now for the error I'm getting with the Kenko and a non canon non EFor EF-S lens, I think I solved the problem. I did what others do about not locking the Kenko into the camera. As soon as I lock it into the camera I get the error message. My solution?
carefully put a piece of paper over the contacts in the camera. This will avoid any communication between the camera and the lens. I just tried this and the camera will not give the error. I do not recommend using a piece of tape because of the sticky glue that may stick to the contacts and give problems later. I hope this solves your problems.
Very helpful... did work for mine too.. thanks man :)
@theknights9 IT could have been my Camera not the lens. I did do some cleaning on both the lens and the camera contact and seems to be working fine now. Thanks for the reply.
Cats are allways on when something is going on:))
I'm having exactly the same problem with a Vivitar Series 1 28-105mm 4-5.6. Can't shoot past 4.0, get the same error.
If it helps I have the same problem but seem to have fixed the problem temporarily because I read somewhere that you can use a rubber/eraser on the connections to rub away the dirt and it seems to have worked for now...fingers crossed. I will add, without teaching anyone to suck eggs, to ensure the bits of rubber/eraser do not fall internally to the lens otherwise you'll have issue getting the bits out.
depending on how you look at it--you can either work around the problem.. or your lens is junked. I haven't found a solution yet.
I have this problem with my 550D but with both my kit lens and my 50mm lens. I havent used it in a while but i've got a shoot on the 14th, what do i do. It's still under warranty but I've lost the reciept :(
Hi Stregoner11, how did you solve it?
This usually happens if you increase the aperture. I have the same problem, wish there is a solution for this.
I have a 16-35 f2.8 II L which is a new lens on a t1i and Im having the same problem but not all the time. I dunno whats going on.
Nice bro.. its worked for me 😊👍
must be the aperture blades must be stuck, because same thing happened to me just today on my 28mm f1.8 USM,
Hi how are you, I have the exact same camera as you a canon t3i rebel. And my lens is the same as your Canon. But unfortunately the error that comes up is that communications are faulty and it says that I should clean the contact lens. Im not very sure how to do it and I'd rather not spend my money on a whole entire new lens. Do you have any suggestions on how could fix this problem?
He probably got a newer lens. I've been told this is a common problem with older pre-digital and non-canon lenses
Thanks man, scared the crap out of me with my Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM lens I was testing right before my vacation.
hi! i m using canon 600d when i used 55-250 lens i have a problem error 01, but, when i used 18-55 lens, there is no problem at all. what is the problem any suggestions on how to fix error communication between the camera and lens? when i take a photograph, it says that I need to clean the lens. I followed the steps as what I've watched in the video but it didn't work.
what should I do?
Wow! It works! Hope it lasts.
I have the same problem just today. I use a Tamron 70-300 mm lens for my canon 1100D. And I used to zoom at 300 mm when I took pictures of people surfing. Yesterday it was OK, I could zoom at 300, but today it didn't work anymore. When I zoom at 300, I got an error No.01 message when I push the shutter button, but it is OK when I only zoom at 180, but I need to zoom at 300 to take surfing pictures. Anybody can help? This problem sucks me a lot .....
I really don`t know if this will fix for long, but for now... it`s working...
WTH?????
My lens is a cannon 50mm 1.4 and I did it too...
I recommend Canon digital lenses....???
at the time of posting this, I was actually looking for help in solving a problem I was having. sorry to have disappointed you
Hi, Very good advice !!! Thanks !!
Te compraste una f* cannon? :/
Hey, i have the same issue, how did someone/anyone managed to resolve it? This issue randomly started after 5 years of using the gears without any problem or even dropping the lens... let me know if there is any solution which will solve this issue for good.
i have the same problem nnow, did you end up fixing it?
How did you solve it? what did you do?
OK maybe i should've added that I then went on to shoot at f2.8 and the lens now works fine, it was shooting at f/32 that fixed the problem though. It's a shame this lens hasn't worked out for you as i use it all the time, I hope it works on the 70D for you.
This happened to me just yesterday when I was asked to take photos of an event (i'm no professional photographer nor an enthusiast) This happened to me just right before the important shots that I need. Tho I kinda resolved in my case. The error happens when the lens is fully zoomed out. I just try to Off/On the cam then zoom in a little, and it worked.
Also 1 more question, how do you make the screen appear (so i won't need to peek on the hole?) My camera is Canon 550D. tnx
I face the same problem you have/had. Did you manage to solve this issue somehow?
The ZOOM is the issue for my lens contacts too! Thank you so much, even 9 years later (!), for your comment here.
@@bunbun8670 np 🤣
sorry can you tell me how to go to that menu.I can't find it
Tank you
I got a 7d + 24-105 L lens and I am having the same crap happening...!!! please let me know if anyone know how..or what is going on!!!
hi, I've tried cleaning it but the error still there
I have a T3i a nd this just happened other day at a Graduation was using a Cannon 75 /300 so not sure whats wrong with this :(
Sue Mapes It has to do with the age of the lens
How mate ?
i have the same problem, 7D + tamron 17-50 f2.8
That mean your lens need to be sent to canon for repair, the power Diaphragm of the lens is not working any more,
1:4-5.6 is not the same as 1.4-5.6 The standard way apertures are described is with a 1: Confusing, I know. Your lens is a f4-5.6. Thanks for the video. Say hi to Whisper the cat for me!
faulty aperture cable...I think...
the Diaphragm power is not working , the aperture will stuck
Err 01 - Communications between the camera and the lens...
my camera is Canon 600d..
lens tamaron..Af70-300mm.F/4.5.6
Amyth Dj I have same problem. Did you fix it ?
my camera is Cannon 400D.
old model☺
Jason, your lens is not an f1.4-5.6. It is actually an f4-5.6. That's why it won't go down less than 4. :)
Hey, Elis,.. thanks for pointing that out. When I made this video a couple of years ago .. i obviously didn't know much about photography. However, the error connected to this lens had less to do with the Aperture range of the lens and more to do with the age, brand and damage done to the lens. It was my fathers lens... and he dropped it a long time ago. It's basically useless now. Thanks again for watching and thanks for the comment.
You're welcome. :) Dropped lenses are always a problem. Makes your heart hurt when you drop them, for sure. I also use some of my father's old nikon lens on my canon (with an adapter of course) and I LOVE them. One of my canon lenses has the same problem as yours and has been like that since I bought it. But because I live in Brazil it was tricky to send it back and have it repaired or ask for a new one. Well, I keep using it - when it doesn't give me trouble! :) All the best to you!
Elis AlvesPhotography Oi!!!
Obrigada
+Silvana Moreira Conseguiu resolver teu problema?! Comprei uma 24-105 e estou passando pelo mesmo problema?! Qualquer coisa me mande uma msg relatando como solucionou! Grato...
que nada.. dinheiro jogado fora...
don't quit your day job bud!
you need to get the lens chipped
think before you make a video, this is aweful and so unhelpful
Thank you sir for your comment and feedback. I appreciate the good and the bad and always strive for a better product. I guess it's time to update this video with what I've learned over the past 4+ years. You'd be surprised.
+Jason Knight Any update with link? Just curious, I'm in relatively the same boat with a lens I got from Goodwill.
lol, i have a lens that is more expensive then the camera, i want my money back cannon, u suck. i can't believe i chose u vs nikon. i wanted canon 650D because it came with an expensive camera lens (same price as the camera) and had the 180 display witch helped when i record myself for example.
1 given it 2 times to repair it, it worked sometimes, but i needed to work all the time, everyday, because i usually use it at weddings.
If i get my money back then i probably will buy in the future stuff from canon, if not, fuck canon!
we re not interested to your problem, sorry. Who lands here is because is looking a solution for the same problem, not to show how fine is to see on your canon display Err 01.
unlike vide, bad review.
lol @ 1.4. its f4! lmao
I'm happy to entertain - also thankful that I've learned so much in four years.
