    Wildest one-of-a-kind hike in the lower 48. Bushwhacking and the challenge of finding the correct route put it over the top. I didn't realize that this area contained such a variety of terrain and geology. I'm watching it for the third time right now.

    I remain wordless at such a magnificence. Blue sky, green grass full of wildflowers in all colours, surrounded by huge mountainwalls and white glaciers.... ! Gorgeous ! My favourite phrase I hear you saying, Jarl, is "What a beautifull morning !" - For how many years have you been hiking ? Twenty ? It seems to me you and your buddy Joey have built up a solid healthy constitution ! Enduring tiredness and... wounded feet, no ?? I also wonder if your back doesn't get suffering from your heavy backpack.... 20 kilo ? Surely, throughout the years you've got used to it... Many thanks for these beautifull films !

    • @NorwegianXplorer
      @NorwegianXplorer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, you could be right, we were discussing that option, it was def a hunting camp, there were several scaffoldings set up in the area also without any kind of platform, and they had clearly been torn at by bears.

    I'm from Wyoming born and raised and have hiked every place except the cross from the Tetons to the Absaroka crossing the Thoroughfare. The hike you just finished.
    I'm too old to do this now but have always been curious. I don't know if Joey told you that there have been two major incidents with bears in the last several years. One involved a woman who wanted to camp for long periods in the area near Rampart. She was interested in studying bears despite what the rangers told her. Kind of a female version of Timothy Treadwell. She appeared on the road one day wild-eyed and refused to go back and get her stuff. The other was much more tragic and was over close to the Teton side. I couldn't tell how close you got to that section. In the Autumn there are outfitters that take hunters into the area and have their horses bolt, turn around and run back, as well as buck off their riders. Their ears are moving 24/7 and their nostrils are working overtime. I don't know if it's a blessing or a curse that you didn't encounter grizzlies. I think you're lucky that you didn't. But I'm old now.

    • @NorwegianXplorer
      @NorwegianXplorer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Scott, thanks for your insights, Yes I have heard storries from Joey and other sources about bear incidents, not the particular one you mention with the woman, but others, about outfitters being attacked by bears while hunting in this exact area etc. We were very much on guard at all times and built perimeters around our camps every night and I am sure there were many bears that were aware of us but choose to ignore us. It was very warm and we think the bears were hunkered down at higher ground to cool off. Rampart creek felt very very far out and wild for sure! Joey has encountered many Grizzlies out in the Thorofare, but this was also his first time up Open Creek and Rampart.

Started investigating a route to the headwaters of Yellowstone River and came across your two-part video. To be honest it was distracting and had to remind myself to never mind the pants, pay attention to the scenery. Too funny. Duck tape it, Joey! Sorry, I am one with an OCD. I didn't know that Joey was going to be in your video. He has a very distinctive hiking style and his "walk" is unmistakable; and his backpack always has something flopping, usually a utensil of sorts. Anyway, this was such an enjoyable adventure and thank you for sharing it.

      Thank you Deborah, I am not sure about the mileage, I only recorded the first day which was 17,6 miles, I think that might have been the longest day of the trip by distance although the time spent down in Rampart Creek seemed endless.

      @@NorwegianXplorer Wow, 17.6 miles! But you were fresh and those meadows probably made for an "easier" day. I definitely got the impression that the Rampart Creek area was pretty grueling, plus the threat of grizzlies and the lack of a trail as an added "bonus"! lol The entire journey was just wonderful and, dare I say; ethereal. The beauty was just beyond imagination! Again, thanks so much for bringing us (especially those whose ability to wander has been stolen) along with you.

    I watch a lot of these western back country videos to pick up ideas of areas I would like to explore when I venture out most summers. Without exception (and with apologies to MyOwnFrontier) this series is the most spectacular I've seen, and I'm stingy with my superlatives. These two videos actually do justice to the vistas you captured (on a iphone no less!). It is a sensory overload! I got to get caught up on your channel. Thanks for sharing your experience in the wilds of America and this area particularly.

    Well, until this video piqued my interest, I don't recall knowing even one thing about the Yellowstone River, its existence, let alone the whereabouts of its headwaters. After following it on a map I was amazed at the size and length of it, and it's confluence with the Missouri River. I'm truly impressed. The scenery in your video is both spectacular and magical. Unlike you, I don't want to hike or camp in grizzly country. Thanks for sharing all the magnificent scenery.
