Congratulations guys, you're joining the best part of an awesome club. Being a parent is amazing, but being a parent and owning an MR2, a massive jump up the levels of epic! Seriously though, good on you guys. It will be the hardest thing you've ever done, but you'll love every minute of it. I'm 7 months through my life sentence so far, loved every minute of it!
Congrats ! I got that bolt out by putting the flywheel back on and wedging a ring spanner against its pressure plate guide pins and the crank case and then it came off with the breaker bar, easy
If you bolt a piece of that metal across the rear of the crank so both end either wedge on the stand mounts or you can chain each end to gearbox mounting holes. That way the torque applied is spread over 2 bits rather than one and as it will be short lenght the moment will be a lot less! Then you can put a pole over your breaker bar to really apply some torque. Wedge the engine up against the work bench to stop it moving or brace it with 2 legs (chunks of wood) at the pulley end. As others have mentioned, use a good penetrant. I wouldn't heat as it will damage the rubber in the pulley. Congrats on the baby. The flywheel may get away with a reface at a machine shop. They will have to take the dowels out and take the same amount off that surface as they take off the friction ring. I did this with mine 7 years ago and its fine (my head gasket isn't but thats another story). If you need any advice hit me up on mr2oc, "abovetherim"
Thanks for all the tips, we’ll give them a go 😊 yeah, I’m reluctant to try heating it, unless absolutely everything else fails. We’ve already soaked it in penetrating spray, didn’t help though 😕 think a new fly wheel will probably just be easier at this point, although we haven’t managed to find anyone that stocks them yet.
Congrats lovely people. I had a SW20 (and AW11) back in the 90's, probably when you were babies yourselves. Enjoy all your vids, impressed by the determination to succeed on these big projects without a massive amount of experience (I mean that in a nice way). Cheers
I would recommend replacing both clutch and flywheel. The flywheel shows *heavy* overheating damage (the scratches you see aren't scratches, they're heat cracks) so the clutch is likely been cooked a lot too.
Clutch... Replace anyway, might aswel, flywheel get it skimmed... Again might aswel For the harmonic balancer but... Plenty of plus gas and a blow torch Then on the flywheel side put some angle iron with two holes and bolt it to the flywheel side of the crank, then let it wedge on the engine stand Worked for me but yes they're bloody tight!
Congratulations on the addition of a 3rd cast member! 4th if you count Monkey. A little penetrating oil on the balancer bolt over the course of days can help a bit. A little heat on the bolt itself may soften any locking compound on the bolt.
We actually have two cats, Mango and Monkey, but Mango is a little camera shy, so really it'll be our 5th 😄 It's not shown on the episode, but we did soak the bold in penetrating spray, and left it for a couple of days.
Congrats on the baby! You should really try to keep the content flowing as many of us have kids and know how hard it is to work on toys and have a young one.
We'll definitely keep working on the projects and making videos, they may just be a little less frequent. Everything takes about 3 times longer when you're filming it.
Congrats. And Ha Ha, 26 degrees, boiling hot! You brits are hilarious! Though reminds me of when we were in London a few years back around this time and it was about that temperature and people were taking their shirts off in the park to lay in the sun.
Should I comment that it's been really nice driving around with the T bar off my MR2 for the past few days? ;-) It's 27 years old and I've had it for 24 years...used to be my daily driver but now relegated to sunshine duties.
Congratulations guys!!!! Don't stop appearing entirely Sophie... But of course, other priorities. :) Your videos have been excellent inspiration for my own DIY car struggles/precise engineering and just generally great entertainment. You make a fine double act and it would be a shame for it not to continue in some form in the future. 'Bon chance' with the upcoming arrival. :)
Definitely replace the clutch and flywheel when it's off the car. We broke 2 breaker bars trying to get that same bolt off mine. We used a torch to get it hot and use a huge pry bar to break it loose.
Congrats! :) If you're having trouble with loosen up the nuts, try to use WD40 to let the rust loosen up, rust is basically our greatest enemy, so be aware of not force the nut to go around! That's what I use mostly when i'm working on my Mr2 :p
Congratulation guys. And Matt, always wear a suitable mask when working on clutches, there are all sorts of nasty things in clutch dust, just like brake dust, just in much greater qualities. That old clutch looks rather like it's been cooked a few times so you need to check carefully for bluing of the flywheel which could indicate damage caused by overheating which can effect the treatment of the flywheel clutch mating face. Those "scratches" you're seeing on the flywheel aren't scratches, they're cracks caused by overheating. It might be possible to have the flywheel refaced depending on how deep the cracks go, but I would suggest replacing it might be much easier and potentially cheaper. Experience has shown that refaced flywheels can warp much more easily than an untouched part and you don't really want to have to revisit this job again any time soon, hence the advice to replace the clutch. I would say replace the clutch assembly and release bearing as that clutch doesn't seem to have been engaging evenly, there seems to be more wear on one side of the plate than others...
Thanks for all the tips! Looks like a new clutch kit and flywheel are in Misty’s future 👍 it didn’t occur to me to put a mask on, I’ll remember next time. Sophie’s always telling me to wear masks and goggles, but she wasn’t there to supervise when I took the clutch out 😂 - Matt
Congrats guys im so happy for you both! I think im going to buy matt a ratchet extension as a baby gift so he can keep all of his fingers for child care 😂
A 150psi rated portable air tank has a minimum 3.5:1 safety factor (by ASME regs). So putting 200psi in it (jamming the popoff valve if necessary) at the heavy truck tire shop is technically a no-no, but it's VERY unlikely to kill you. Then you run it home and get 1000ft/lbs of torque out of your rattle gun easily for a few seconds. Safest thing is put the motor on the ground, put the flywheel back on and jam it, and then just let the rattlegun work for a while or get a longer lever.
Not sure about over pressuring that old compressor, especially as it actually belongs to Matt's Dad 😖 we'll try that though, especially as the general consensus is that the flywheel needs to be replaced, no worries about damaging it.
Engines and Unfinished Business Not the compressor, a portable air tank. $30ish in the US. Get it filled once at a truck tire shop, their compressor is designed for higher output.
Congratulations! not sure where you're gonner put the baby seat in the MR2 or on the F700 though! Also, i'm sorry but when the bit of metal you built to try and free that pulley bolt bent I giggled a bit. I prescribe fire.
I had the same problem with my harmonic balancer. I tried a bit of penetrating oil, and a higher PSI impact driver (I still had to brace it with a bar though).
The impact gun can “supposedly” put out 500 ft/lbs, I suspect our tiny little compressor and the long hose are throttling it. We did soak the bolt in penetrating spray, and we have some box section lying around, that may be the next option 👍
Jon Newman When you and I discuss WD40 I assume you also mean standard wd40. Their rust penetrant version is actually decent (according to the comparative test by that one youtube guy who also tests duct tape). PB blaster is also good.
And the reason I’m leaving my engine rebuild to the pros is? Costing me six grand but at least I don’t have to sweat over seized nuts and bolts. Congrats by the way.
Unfortunately the starter isn't attached the gearbox. And the gearbox isn't attached the engine. And the flywheel isn't attached the engine. And the engine isn't attached the car 😂
Ok then get a better air set up that flows better and at a higher pressure, also you can try the blue wrench, ie heat the head of the bolt up quickly so it grows in length. Heating it slowly won't work so well because the heat will have time to soak in to the pulley and crank as well. I think mapp gas torches are quite cheap
To late but not fr next time,if ya know yr gonna losen the crank bolt best to do it with the tranny and engine in the car, usually removed the starter and puttin prybar though starter hole on flywheel teeth, since ya cant do that take the engine off stand, put the flywheel back on losely and usually ya can find a spot on the back of the engine to lock up the flywheel with a prybar and flywheel teeth, the way yr doin it know its like a teeter toter with a 95# weekling on one side and a 200#fat kid on the other, teeter toter will break before the lite kid can overcome fat kid,not gonna stop my patreon donation but hopin ya pair up togethee again cause you two are a laugh riot, frm bryan lucas, only ONE lucas!
Re, crank pully nut, stick the flywheel back on, make a clamp or 2 jam the flywheel good un tight, take the strain on the nut with a 2 or 3 foot breaker bar, get at least a 4lb hammer, while under strain hit the fucker as hard as u can, (2 man job really)
We did wonder that, but the service manual always says when it’s left handed, and nothing online has mentioned it being a left handed thread. Think it’s just really stuck in there
Congrats you two! Well, sounds like you both are questioning the future of this channel? I hope not, and turn it into a family affair. Oh, please use a longer wrench for some of those bolts on the engine so u don’t keep cracking your knuckles. Okay: clutch info, keep that one, it’s still looks good, and Exedy is a good brand, been around along time. If the rivers are missing or protruding then you would need to replace but that still has allot of meet on it. The flywheel needs resurfaced or replaced though. See those bluish marks, hot spots, no bueno! If you can afford it, get a lightened new one! They probably thought it was a clutch issue hence the aftermarket clutch, then sold it when they figured it was the gear box. For the crankbolt, spray with penetrating grease, WD40 or whatever and let sit overnight, try to tighten first, then loosen it, you’ll need to put an extension pipe of at least 3 feet or more on the end of your breaker bar to get more leverage, last would be to heat it up, but I really don’t recommend that. Actually, spray all the bolts with penetrating lubricant before removing them, less chance of tearing the head off and then having to deal with that mess. Forgive me, don’t know your names, but tell the wife she looks amazing in “prego” mode and sure she might gain some weight, but this is to be a beautiful experience, so enjoy it. If that means less videos, but you two are happy, then 🤙 Best of luck! Keep us updated😉
Thanks! The channel will definitely live on, we've loved making these videos, and have had such an amazing response from people 😄 There just maybe less frequent videos for a little while. Thanks for such a detailed response. That's a great point about the previous owner thinking the clutch was the issue with the gearbox, makes a lot of sense. We did spray the bolt with penetrating fluid, didn't help though 😕 There's still a lot of clearance between the clutch face and the rivets, but we still may get a new clutch kit along with the flywheel, can't hurt to do it all while we've got the engine out. Yeah, we're reluctant to heat the bolt up, as it's so close to the crankshaft, don't want to risk any damage there.
Congrats all the way from NZ. You both have given me inspiration to carry on getting my 2 back on the road. Keep up the great work
Thanks! Hope your MR2 doesn't take as long as ours to get back on the road 😂
Good to know it works ah Matt! Nice work Stud!
Congratulations to you three!
Congratulations, Engine and unfinished babies!
Good luck for your family. It will be wonderful experience.
Congratulation! And thank you for all the awesome content!
Thanks!
congrats on the baby guys. My wife giving birth to our first child was the biggest moment in my life!!

Interesting, we'll keep that technique in mind 👍
Congratulations! I sure hope you can keep up the videos at least every now and again. I sure do enjoy them! Best wishes!
Whoo Hooo for the baby!!!!
Congrats to both of you! Hope everything goes really well and that you get to really enjoy the experience.
Congratulations! That’s wonderful news!
congratulations folks!

awww. congrats guys!

Congratulations! Need to get a bigger vehicle now with more than two seats :)
We’ve got our little Hyundai i20, not quite as fun as the MR2 though 😖 maybe we should turbo charge it 😂
I would recommend replacing both clutch and flywheel. The flywheel shows *heavy* overheating damage (the scratches you see aren't scratches, they're heat cracks) so the clutch is likely been cooked a lot too.

Yeah, 26 degrees is far too much for us, it's been even hotter these last couple of days, the whole country has pretty much just stopped 😂
Should I comment that it's been really nice driving around with the T bar off my MR2 for the past few days? ;-) It's 27 years old and I've had it for 24 years...used to be my daily driver but now relegated to sunshine duties.

You can buy flywheel locking tools that goes in place of the starter, or buy a good impact gun , it will make unbolting a piece of cake
Contrats guys.. i had mr2s when my lil girl was born, 11 years ago.. she loves them , dont let anybody tell ya what you can and cant do
Congratulations!

Well congratulations!
Congrats! You should replace the clutch and flywheel.
Thanks! Unfortunately that does seem to be the consensus, looks like we've got some more shopping to do...
Congrats guys!
congratulations!!!
Congrats.
Congrats guys im so happy for you both! I think im going to buy matt a ratchet extension as a baby gift so he can keep all of his fingers for child care 😂
lovable poms think 26c is boiling .. oh you guys are so cute!! :D
John P Yeah just imagine your great grand parents trip over there from the English prison to Australia. Must have been tough.
Congrats! Obviously I'm sad that there will be fewer videos (won't somebody think of the brand??) but good for you guys!

Probably done crank now but for future use bar and remove plug 1 fill chamber with rope then turn slow till jams rope, worked for me. Sorry bit late
I mean, If you are really set on breaking it with manly force you could get some thick box stock steel.
The impact gun can “supposedly” put out 500 ft/lbs, I suspect our tiny little compressor and the long hose are throttling it. We did soak the bolt in penetrating spray, and we have some box section lying around, that may be the next option 👍
I would recommend using PB Blaster for really stuck bolts, it seems to work a bit better than WD40

That’s basically what we ended up doing 👍
jeez that breaker bar is a little too close to the groin Matt, good thing you got Sophie pregnant already. Congrats BTW
Is it a left handed thread?
We did wonder that, but the service manual always says when it’s left handed, and nothing online has mentioned it being a left handed thread. Think it’s just really stuck in there

Congratulations!!!
Oblithian it's a baby!

Use some heat
you don't have enough air pressure to make full use of their gun
