  • On 14 November 2023, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute held a webinar with the authors of its 2023 report ‘Australia’s national semiconductor moonshot: securing semiconductor talent’.
Report authors Bronte Munro, Dr Robert Clark and Alex Capri, in conversation with Dr Alexandra Caples, Director of Cyber, Technology and Security at ASPI, outlined how Australia can develop a talent pipeline to support a sovereign semiconductor manufacturing industry. Discussion focused on global trends in friend-shoring between allies to address talent pipeline and supply chain security, and examples of effective public-private partnerships that Australia can draw on to develop its own capability.
Panellists discussed a staged funding approach to kick-start Australia’s manufacturing industry via the National Reconstruction Fund as an initial stimulus for foreign investment and their recommendations for the national semiconductor strategy, including opportunities to develop capabilities in states such as NSW and Queensland.

This is a perfect example of the challenges facing Australian Cyber Strategy. People leading strategic policy with little or no formal qualifications in Cyber, Technology or Security. You can't be a Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher, Social Worker, Psychologist or Nurse in Australia without formal qualifications and registration. However, anyone can be a Cyber Expert and drive strategic policy. Rather ironic
