He didn't start in 1988, he played with a pick as far back as Hell Awaits, you can hear it on the Bass break in Praise of Death (Though he likely used his fingers for most of the album), and he used a pick throughout all of Reign In Blood.
@@weskleydavid710 not exclusively, in this video you can see him go back and forth with each technique. For example, on Criminally Insane, he uses a pick, but on Altar of Sacrifice he uses his fingers. th-cam.com/video/wBF-j6OVcfc/w-d-xo.html
"Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo set his drum kit on the concrete and the kit went "all over the place" while playing. Lombardo asked Gene Hoglan to hold his kit together, while recording "Chemical Warfare", with Hoglan thinking "I hope he does this in one or two takes, because this is rough." Hoglan was coaching Lombardo how to use double-bass drums to improve his drumming ability and speed, Lombardo asserts Hoglan was "an amazing double-bass player even back then," although Hoglan played double bass since a short time then." Thanks for sharing that, that's a really valuable piece of information !
This is with his fingers only. He did a great job. As a bass player myself I commend him on that recording right there. He didn't start using a pick until south of heaven.
In all the slayer albums without Dave , there’s no natural flow, Not to take anything away from Paul as a drummer, however he’s just not able to hear things how Dave hears them, The only drummer for slayer is Dave, I’m glad they are retiring.
I feel that this really show that a bass player doesn’t need to play the most complex things to be a good player. He/she just needs to keep tempo and play most of right notes. The bass is the support the the other members use, not the leading lady.
True that.. Motorhead, The Police, Rush, some I can think of for now, but if you think about it they're the perfect fit to the music they play. Maybe Tom doesn't fill up your expectations on bass playing, but when Lombardo was gone, even though the drummer who played for the band at the time was good enough for Slayer; Slayer was missing soul. Same with Tom! Now maybe it's not the case or maybe it is.. what's gonna be of Slayer without Jeff and Lombardo? Hope I made my point. Cheers bro!!
thats fine if you like his playing but you cant tell me he is in your top three metal bass players. Thats all im trying to say. Great Metal vocalist Average bass player.
A great bassist is the one that makes the band sound amazing, and Tom's bass lines are simply perfect for Slayer. You don't need to play complex to be an amazing bass player.
i have respect for his vocals but his bass playing is something that leaves fans with more to desire. yea its hard to do vocals and play an instrument but there are many who have been able to do it so no excuse for tom.
He plays with fingers here. He started playing with pick in 1988.

it sounds like horses chasing you and about to reach your ass. It has to be hard to play bass and sing fast at the same time, my respect to Tom.
