I love the battery technology back then. Way better than we have today. Didn't weigh that much and could withstand the extreme heat, cold and vacuum of space. Everything was better back then. They are easily damaged by the ionic radiation in the Van Allen Belts. NASA is working on hardening the new spacecraft's components to get through the VAB unscathed.
Low gravity = Easy movemet. The spacesuit just pushes that equation in the negative direction. Imagine weighing a fourth, with the same muscle strength. That's an unfamiliar environment. Now add in a stiff-as-f*ck spacesuit.
I'm not a "we didn't go to the moon" nut job, but the rover always bugged me - that it could actually be stowed in the base of the LEM and that the astronauts could deploy and assemble such a vehicle while wearing bulky suits. Always seemed kind of a stretch to me - but guess what ? They did it!
The rover folded in three places with the wheels tucked in. The only additional assembly was a few experimental components and mounting the camara. There is vid of Apollo 15 showing them deploy from LEM.

They never went further with the rover than they were able to walk back when needed

@@MrDnB89 Not exactly correct. The transistor count on IC's is thousands of times greater than what was in the electronics on the Apollo missions. They are easily damaged by the ionic radiation in the Van Allen Belts. NASA is working on hardening the new spacecraft's components to get through the VAB unscathed.

I'm not a "we didn't go to the moon" nut job, but the rover always bugged me - that it could actually be stowed in the base of the LEM and that the astronauts could deploy and assemble such a vehicle while wearing bulky suits. Always seemed kind of a stretch to me - but guess what ? They did it!
The rover folded in three places with the wheels tucked in. The only additional assembly was a few experimental components and mounting the camara. There is vid of Apollo 15 showing them deploy from LEM.

2:27 i wonder how boeing won the contract for a lunar vehicle. you would assume any of the american automotive companies would have been a better choice at the time (aside from internal combustion engines wouldnt work without oxygen). maybe electric cars would have come even sooner
