Very good showcase of river defense battles!
If your army is larger you might want to use three or four units at each crossing and not defend at the smallest point but instead form a half circle or inward facing V around it, in which the enemy can run into. This way they suffer more morale debuffs and chances are that they will expose their backs more often.
Sometimes the bridge also tends to stop missiles, when shooting from the sides, so Javelins and Slingers might be best placed in front of it.

Good tips! The only downside of a V-shaped or a half-circle formation is that its right side is standing with unshielded side towards the enemy force so is vulnerable to their ranged units shooting from the other side of the river, while a simple line will always be blocking with shields.

@TotalWarfare Aye, thats right, though for my experience hostile skirmishers tend to not account for this and will instead just walk onto the ford/ bridge or bug out. If it becomes a problem you can stretch the right side of your formation - where the unshielded side is exposed - into a longer line connecting with the river at a small angle. Of cause this would be a bit less efficient - and the enemy is unlikely to fill out the whole room - but on the left side you should still get a good surround on them.

You mean hoplite wall? Yeah it's stronger and it was on for both hoplites during the battle :)

@TotalWarfare hoplite wall is actually worse. It's a too tight formation - the units focus too much on getting back in positions they don't get into attack animations at all. They end up taking more damage than delivering damage because enemy's animations are continous in the meantime.
You can test this in custom battle

Well I tested it quite extensively. Perhaps a topic for another video with various scenarios :)

How does the general effect the units beside rally or inspire?

If the bodyguards are an alite unit, they'll usually have 'Encourage' passive ability which boosts morale of nearby allies
