Eastern way of warfare will make for a great This Is Total War campaign!

You always need to be 1. outnumbered and 2. suffer less than about 20% casualties. But there's another factor in play as I also only got decisive a few times. Could be total cost of army as you say or something else

Yeah, collateral damage can be brutal, especially with ballistaes

Yeah, lack of decent cavalry is Sparta's biggest weakness. Keeps things balanced and historically accurate though

Also great way to obliterate blob once it's formed, or to cover exits from fort if attacking with ranged advantage forcing them to get out

Good job finishing the campaign! Yeah, Carthage is more tricky but also more fun to play!

Revenge was sweet indeed - for Gauda! Yeah that battle was close - always tricky fighting pikes when not having them ourselves!

Trample is great and I use it sometimes (not always as it makes unit exhausted), but shooting ballistae manually is too much micromanaging for my likening

Or maybe you're not as bad as you think. Plenty of players struggle with Rome 2 on higher difficulties

At least in land battles it does the basics well - tries to flank with cavalry, keeps skirmishers and general behind the main line, targets enemy generals with skirmishers. Not great but not a disaster either

@ thats true, ive lost many good men against the AI in open battles, but the siege AI is just broken, congrats btw ive tried seleucid total war and youre just a god in stategies🤝

Fun fact: if your are on the town defense map with the peninsula and that long beach, if you put all your units on the end of that peninsula they will send like 1-2 units to shoot at them and if you kill those with range units the ai will state at you until the battle ends and you win.

Macedon is tough. Iceni are probably the best - you start in the corner of the map, with 5 other islandic factions but all of them are weak. Once you have the islands under control, you pick when and where to invade the continent. Other strong pick is Bactria - great roster, also starting in the corner, pikes and elephants

Strong for sure but not anywhere near as broken as in Rome 1. They have weaknesses (javelins, flaming arrows, pikes) making them somewhat balanced compared to R1

Rome has strong early game units and starts with 4 cities meaning they can have 4 armies, so yeah it should be doable in Para Bellum. Factions with less than 3 settlements are likely impossible as you can only have one army

Glad you enjoy the campaign! If these upgraded hoplites were there for a few turns, perhaps is one of the earlier techs that enabled them. Either way they're strong so I'm happy we have them!

Glad you enjoy it! Yeah, there are more options possible in 'normal' campaign (as opposite to this is total war) as things like trade and diplomacy actually matter. So it's a nice change!

They're OK for the first few turns but once you have access to Carthaginian hoplites you should only hire those as they are better in every respect. The main issue with Lybian hoplites is they are to expensive for what they offer, but they do become better when upgraded to late lybian hoplites as they gain 25 armour

@TotalWarfare i agree with about those, yea the carthaginian hoplites are very good. Libiyan hoplites do what they are supposed to do their not an elite unit a mid tier who can do dcenet enough job until you get the top tier. The price doesn't make them trash

Very interesting! If patrolling gets better over time then it might be worth it after some turns, otherwise the cost of the patrolling fleet outweights the loss reduction from reduced piracy

@@TotalWarfare it kind of creates a similar tradeoff mechanic for Attila where sanitation/food/money/public order all kind of counterbalance each other and its difficult to really balance them all in your favour and gets worse as the game goes on; also things like defeating enemy fleets, conquering new coastal territory, bordering contested sea zones, reducing your own fleet size, all those things would increase piracy as well

Mine too! Yeah, they do at higher levels so conquering Egypt with its grain settlements will come in handy!

Agree! There should be an option in game menu for a campaign to be played with This Is Total War so you wouldn't need to worry about making sure wars are declared etc. as the game would do it for you. Wishful thinking, I know
