When people talk about players who mastered the fretboard, Julian Lage is one of the few I’ve seen that truly fit in that category, it’s just incredible. It’s not even a style of music I dedicate much time listening to at all but could listen to him play all day.
One thing I love about Lage's playing that I didn't notice until I tried to learn "Nocturne" is how he sustains melody or bass notes while playing other notes. Combine that with his superb use of dynamics, and there are so many under-the-radar notes that set the mood for everything else. Truly a master at what he does.

Julian Lage is the object of every guitar player's envy. If I could play half as good as him, I would never stop. I guess never stopping is his secret as well 😂 But god his control over dynamics and mood (on top of sheer melodic and harmonic ability) just blows me away every time. You're always slightly on edge when you hear him play and he always resolves his phrases beautifully. Gah I just swoon over his playing every time
Julian is the Michelangelo of our time. There is no other player that has the depth of musicianship and stylistic vocabulary of Julian. He can play everything from jazz, classical to bluegrass with Chris Eldridge. I’m glad you pointed out his sense of rhythm Michael, he has the best internal rhythm of any musician I’ve ever seen.
@@samme79 I see julian draw from the bill evans/bill frissell/jim hall, well, even his contemporaries and peers have that sound vs say, george benson, nile rodgers, etc. The bluegrass and noise/avant garde association doesn't disprove this either. There was a clear divide in the 60s when white artists started taking over jazz and that's in line with what i've heard from his material (and I am a VERY huge fan of his), and it draws from that period rather than jazz adjacent to funk/r&b/soul, which is ofc black music. He has played with dayna stephens, but its jazz that harkens back to those periods, contexts, and alongside the artistic communities I mentioned earlier, rather than incorporating more recent (70s and onward) forms of black music - could you imagine him with say, thundercat/snarky puppy?? He's friends with cory wong, so still, fingers crossed
This guy has completely shattered my sense of music composition. His sense for intervals that bring tension, suddenly followed by release- is uncanny. He seems to be very familiar with the intervals in proximity to his current position, which allows him to disrupt expectation. So beautiful

I’ve seen an interview about this with him…for him it’s just a stop on the train. He talks about all this stuff to still work on and get better at….in a sense he probably just feels like all of us with the exception that people pay to watch him.

The first time I saw Lage play this Etude, I was moved and impressed all at once. The wonder hasn’t warn off. He’s a cut above. I don’t know how else to describe him.

I’ve been playing for years and the look on Michael’s face is my reaction every time I watch a video of Julian Lage playing. Absolutely mind blowing yet soothing and Heavenly. Musicians like Julian take you on trips every time they play.
I love this presentation. You say what 99.9% of every guitarist feels when they listen to Julien. He is a master with such crossover influence it is hard to quantify.

I got to meet Julian Lage at a meet and greet before his London Jazz Fest, UK performances in November. He was very patient with us all gawking at him and asking questions that don't really have answers, namely "how do that?" I think it's just part of him, his ability, the mind of the child prodigy he was and mastermind he is. I wish I had had yhe foresight of going to both performances rather than just the evening one. His improvisational skills go beyond just improv melodies, and is more composing full pieces on the spot. Yet even he swears that he doesn't hear it unravel before it happens, it just seems to happen. Such a humble guy, certain he is standing in the shadows of other greats, looking up at them. While really he is up there with them
It is like an abstract realism painting when you don't understand anything but feel every color line dimension form which are all in tact and harmony .... Fine Art in music... The only way I can overcome this will be expressing the feeling I got on Canvas ... My nephew plays like this who is a classical guitar player to whom I taught his first chords .... No taking away from Julian's playing at all (he's one of my favourite guitar players as well), but he's likely put a huge amount of work into composing and practicing this piece, many many hours. Making something look effortless comes from hard work. Nothing one picks up quickly from watching a video. Julian sometimes reminds me of the virtuoso Turkish bağlama player Muhlis Berberoğlu, also young and very gifted.
I’ve seen Julian a few times. One of the best guitar nights was a few years ago in Minneapolis at the Dakota Jazz Club where opened for a trio of John Fahey’s disciples from the old Tacoma Records, Peter Lang, RicK Ruskin and the Segovia of Surf, Toulouse Engelhardt. It was a beautiful evening notwithstanding that Peter was not well practiced due to recent health issues.
This is probably my favorite of the many great Michael Palmisano reaction videos, just because of his great reactions as he hears the tuned for three first time. You can hear him thinking, "Whoa, wait - what was that? No, what's this? Wow, and THAT!" Etude is a beautiful composition, but I'd love to see Michael's take on St. Rose, also from the Squint album.
I love your initial reaction when Julian starts playing because that's exactly how I reacted when I first heard him! Now I don't consider myself much of a musician but I do play, and I could tell instantly that there's something magical about this man and the way he plays.

I would die for a collab between Lage and Jonny Greenwood... Lage is such a prodigy. He's definitely up there with the greatest talents of our Gen... Greenwood has an exceptional mind for melody and creativity.. The both of them would come up with the craziest stuff!
Julian is my favourite guitarist, he's such a nice guy too, would be great to him explain things, he just blows my mind with his technique - could listen to him play for hours but watching is just mesmerising, he's so relaxed, takes his time and then has such flurries its just excellent everytime. Makes me wanna learn more music theory too!

I took a Skype lesson w Julian last year. He’s a real inspiration and couldn’t be nicer. He told me he challenges himself to just do pure improvisation for 45 minutes straight sometimes without stopping. Just him and his guitar.
Only recently started to really dig into Julian Lage, incredible... I always laugh to myself when I see another guitarist chuckle to themselves watching another guitarist. I find myself doing that alot while listening to julian

It’s great seeing someone who has at least half an idea of what’s going on being blown away the same way that I am watching and listening. As a relative beginner, it's amazing to me that he can do so much (hand positions, pull offs etc) without ever bending the strings out of tune. I know that's a super basic skill, but it's one of the hardest parts of electric guitar for me.
If you go into the Classical Guitar world and check out some of the recordings of John Williams or Segovia playing fairly modern (20th century anyway) compositions by Latin American composers you'll hear this same sound and feel. Many idioms Lage uses in this piece seem drawn straight from that world (I don't know if he knows this or not, because he's creative enough to have come up with it from scratch). But as a long-time devotee of Classical Guitar (a frustrated player and very avid listener) this piece has a very familiar sound (quite beautiful of course), except you don't usually hear it played on an electric guitar -- and this particular guitar captures the tone of a Classical very well.

I totally agree with you and have thought this forba while. Julian uses classical guitar language along with his jazz language. What he does is just so refined and beautiful.
Julian Lage is doing a master class in Visalia California on September 17th at a place called the cellar door. master class and concert bundle is 85 bucks.
Julian is the type of player every guitarist should strive to be like. Musical, Dynamic, Free, Clean, Organic, and very expressive. You don't have to be as good as him (nobody plays like him), but its a goal to have those qualities in any genre.
The word I kept wanting you to use was 'artist'. He transcends the instrument as only an artist can do. It's incredibly beautiful. He kind of reminds me of South American composer/performer Agustin Barrios. And yes, the orchestral nature of his playing is absolutely classical in its essence. Julian Lage is an artist, with huge ears!
You should definetely listen Nocturne and Cryin, Julian is just something else. He’s so passionate with the instrument, so soft and delicate. I know you’re not a jazz lover, but he’s for sure, something else. One of the best out there!
I saw Julian on the American Acoustic tour with Punch Brothers and I'm with Her.... there were multiple moments that night that ran shivers down my spine. Julian and Chris Eldridge (Punch Brothers guitarist) have done some work together that is totally worth checking out!
Made me think of somethin Earl Klueg said about how he composed on the piano and then rewrote it for the guitar. However this was created, it was a masterpiece from beginning to end

Man, I wish I was here when you released this video and the comments were popping off, but anyways - just wanted to express how sublime Julian is as a player. One thing I've always found to be so ridiculously impressive, is how much control he has over the dynamics of his playing, not just between sections of a song as needed, but even between baseline, harmony and melody, making sure that the core shape of the tune always rings through. Like he's got a mixing desk built into his hybrid-picking right hand.
I had just as much fun watching your facial expressions as I did listening to Julian play. Must admit: I have never heard of him, but I'm glad I have now. Also, I think my face looked like yours the whole time 😆

Michael, you wanted to know what Julian is thinking during some of his playing. I have to imagine your a Paul Davids fan. He posted a 75 minutes interview (75 freakin' minutes!!!) DEEEP dive with JL about 8 days ago. If you haven't seen it, I suspect it's going to give you some pretty good insight into his thinking. The first 5+ minutes is purely on 'touch'....a very good sign.

I just learn by doing the same thing you are doing. If i try and emulate Julian, my ear opens up. I learn new chords and the ideas start exploding. No one told me about Julian Lage. I just discovered him one day and i knew this guy was like no other.

I have never seen Michael so shut down before. It’s a real compliment -to Julian and proof that he loves it all.
Back to this 4 months later, I still love how much joy you’re getting from watching him play, you could hardly breathe during the first watch.

out of all the concerts ive seen, all the amazing musicians, seeing Julian lage live completely blew my mind. he was the greatest guitarist i seen play in my life

I would die for a collab between Lage and Jonny Greenwood... Lage is such a prodigy. He's definitely up there with the greatest talents of our Gen... Greenwood has an exceptional mind for melody and creativity.. The both of them would come up with the craziest stuff!
I really believe Julian. He’s so harmonically genuine. Super tricky without being tricky.
Julian is my favourite guitarist, he's such a nice guy too, would be great to him explain things, he just blows my mind with his technique - could listen to him play for hours but watching is just mesmerising, he's so relaxed, takes his time and then has such flurries its just excellent everytime. Makes me wanna learn more music theory too!

I took a Skype lesson w Julian last year. He’s a real inspiration and couldn’t be nicer. He told me he challenges himself to just do pure improvisation for 45 minutes straight sometimes without stopping. Just him and his guitar.
I’d love to be a fly on THAT wall.
Lage's art is exquisite. We in the lower orders can steal some of his riffs and incorporate them to enrich our repertoire.

As a relative beginner, it's amazing to me that he can do so much (hand positions, pull offs etc) without ever bending the strings out of tune. I know that's a super basic skill, but it's one of the hardest parts of electric guitar for me.

If you go into the Classical Guitar world and check out some of the recordings of John Williams or Segovia playing fairly modern (20th century anyway) compositions by Latin American composers you'll hear this same sound and feel. Many idioms Lage uses in this piece seem drawn straight from that world (I don't know if he knows this or not, because he's creative enough to have come up with it from scratch). But as a long-time devotee of Classical Guitar (a frustrated player and very avid listener) this piece has a very familiar sound (quite beautiful of course), except you don't usually hear it played on an electric guitar -- and this particular guitar captures the tone of a Classical very well.

I totally agree with you and have thought this forba while. Julian uses classical guitar language along with his jazz language. What he does is just so refined and beautiful.
Julian Lage is doing a master class in Visalia California on September 17th at a place called the cellar door. master class and concert bundle is 85 bucks.

Julian is the type of player every guitarist should strive to be like. Musical, Dynamic, Free, Clean, Organic, and very expressive. You don't have to be as good as him (nobody plays like him), but its a goal to have those qualities in any genre.

The word I kept wanting you to use was 'artist'. He transcends the instrument as only an artist can do. It's incredibly beautiful. He kind of reminds me of South American composer/performer Agustin Barrios. And yes, the orchestral nature of his playing is absolutely classical in its essence. Julian Lage is an artist, with huge ears!
He mentioned in one of his masterclasses that Agustin is an inspiration to him and that he has taken some techniques from Agustin :) right on!

You should definetely listen Nocturne and Cryin, Julian is just something else. He’s so passionate with the instrument, so soft and delicate. I know you’re not a jazz lover, but he’s for sure, something else. One of the best out there!

I've watched this Etude a dozen times and goosebumps at the end Everytime..
I saw Julian on the American Acoustic tour with Punch Brothers and I'm with Her.... there were multiple moments that night that ran shivers down my spine. Julian and Chris Eldridge (Punch Brothers guitarist) have done some work together that is totally worth checking out!
Saw this same tour and have caught Critter and Juilian several times live. Other worldly.
Made me think of somethin Earl Klueg said about how he composed on the piano and then rewrote it for the guitar. However this was created, it was a masterpiece from beginning to end
I absolutely love Julian! I emailed him a while back and told him there were only two other guitarists in his circle. Lenny Breau and Yed Greene. He was kind enough to respond. Greatest guitar thinker since Jerry Reed and is doing as much as Chet Atkins for our generation. I would love to see you do a review of Pasquale Grasso I think you would have to pick your jaw up off the floor. Thanks for the great content!

Man, I wish I was here when you released this video and the comments were popping off, but anyways - just wanted to express how sublime Julian is as a player.
One thing I've always found to be so ridiculously impressive, is how much control he has over the dynamics of his playing, not just between sections of a song as needed, but even between baseline, harmony and melody, making sure that the core shape of the tune always rings through. Like he's got a mixing desk built into his hybrid-picking right hand.
I had just as much fun watching your facial expressions as I did listening to Julian play. Must admit: I have never heard of him, but I'm glad I have now. Also, I think my face looked like yours the whole time 😆

Michael, you wanted to know what Julian is thinking during some of his playing. I have to imagine your a Paul Davids fan. He posted a 75 minutes interview (75 freakin' minutes!!!) DEEEP dive with JL about 8 days ago. If you haven't seen it, I suspect it's going to give you some pretty good insight into his thinking. The first 5+ minutes is purely on 'touch'....a very good sign.

I just learn by doing the same thing you are doing. If i try and emulate Julian, my ear opens up. I learn new chords and the ideas start exploding. No one told me about Julian Lage. I just discovered him one day and i knew this guy was like no other.
