That undercoating does not dry. It's a wax/grease... it's meant to be that way. Try Zinc Weld Thru Primer; protects steel from corrosion by sacrificial or galvanic action.

What did you eventually use to paint the inside of your drum?
We're going to attempt collecting distilled water from the steam output, for use in substrate later. What's your thoughts on that?
We used a type of stone chip paint... Very hardy and used for car underbody protection.
Re the water... That can work for sure, just ensure it stays clean and perhaps UV sterilize it anyway because once it cools to a certain temp it is ideal breeding ground for bacteria and other nasties.

Hey and thx for watching! No timer function on this PID, but I am sure you can get one that has it. Alternatively add a normal timer and activate it once it reaches temps

quick question, I'm in a place where I don't really have a constant source of water, how much water do you think you take in one flush?
as I was thinking to just fill it 1/3 of the barrel and hope that that water is enoug
Depends! But I doubt more than 20l (if that)
I would imagine that the tube venting steam can freeze over when you turn it off. Something to check when you turn it on again.
Also how do you make sure the water level is kept above the heater at all time? Not that it is a fire hazard but the heater might break.
Yes exactly. The long-term plan is to craete a pipe/chimney for the steam to vent it. The water level is controlled via a float valve and in case of failure, the run-dry switch will not activate the solid state relay, in other words it will switch off the element if the water level is too low. @@DeyselFarm perhaps the pipe/chimney could double as a overflow drain if the float valve would fail, so it dumps the excess water outside instead of inside? The chimney could be on the side instead of the top lid, letting steam go up and water to the side.

so how much water do you estimate you use for your farming in an year?? and how do you feel about the more expensive the electric bill´s over the last couple months do you have solar pannels or vind power at your disposal??? given how slow our goverment are at compensateing for the higher electric and food bill?s?? sorry foe bad eng
Our farm is exrtemly low-impact on water. We also recycle some water from our de-humidifiers in the greenhouse. Boiling mushroom substrate only tops up the barrel once the level drops, so not a constant water supply. The high electricity costs are indeed an issue. We use 100% renewable energy from our power supplier and have an electricity agreement in place. Thank you so much for your comments :)

What are your thoughts on drilling a small hole on the lid, then sealing the lid? This will allow steam to escape when pressure gets higher than needed.
Do you think that way is not as safe as yours, because, if the thermal sensor malfunctions, then it will overheat because the lid is locked?

What else can you use if you don't want to use a barrel?
Any vessel can work...old water heater, water urn, etc

It rusts unfortunately. Best case would be to get a stainless barrel.
