Howdy - We were using an element that the 220v cable plugs into similar to what you have in the video. The connection would often cause a short and melt the cable. It might be worth it to get a heating element that you can hardwire instead of the cable that plugs into it, these also come with watertight fittings. feel free to reach out if you would like some more details. Thanks for making videos like this and sharing the knowledge! Your hard work is appreciated.
Thanks for watching and the connection! I actually consulted with my electrician and he thought it was a really bad idea to have the elements hard wired so we didn’t go that route.
Yes same question for me. Do you have a manifold inside the trough to direct the steam, or just plum right into the trough and let the steam go where it wants?
Where abouts do you place your temperature probes? I find that sometimes the bags higher up (closer to my steam exhaust hole) heat up faster than the bags below.. Do you place the probes INSIDE the bags, literally dug into the substrate? How many probes? Thanks for the video. Im a mushroom farming in Malaysia going through some issues with drum sterilisation.
how did you rigg that Helios 11at 14:52. THe box has taken 2 outlets and 15 amps each on both sides. Will one outlet handle 30 amps? how is this box connected to the hot wire for the pressure steamer?
I'm not sure why he appears to use two smart switches. I built mine with a 120v 2 pole contactor relay inside a 6" plastic junction box. It's activated by one smart switch. I'm using a Feit smart switch, but I may buy a Kasa or other brand, Feit smart switches are unreliable.
@@BobCampbell530 yo bro U just said you heated the trough for 14 hours then held it for 3 hours. then ran it for another? 17 hours on top of that or did u mean it was running for 17 hours total? lmk thanks
I baught a usd Barrel set up and pluged it in and the heating element heated up then all went off. How do I replace the element ther are 2. Im not sure how to trouble shoot im a newbee
Hey man great, detailed video. You explain things very clearly and it makes it easy to understand from a noob's perspective. Does this work for supplemented substrate? Like master's mix or wheat bran supplemented substrate? or is it only for straw or other non-supplemented substrate?
Hey Justin, I was wondering what you use for a lid for the trough? I use an aluminum backed insulation but it degrades over time. What's worked for you? Thanks man!
Im curious if I could feasibly run this setup outside when the temps are super cold. Im a little nervous about running this in my garage for fear of burning down my house. Thoughts?
Whats under the blanket on the big tank? What is the lid made from?

Yeah listen to your electrician! thanks justin@@longbeachmushrooms
Thank you Justin! Such clear instructions, really appreciate it
You got it! Thanks for watching
Thanks for the video! I am trying to think ahead with own efforts and this is one of the next steps I need to take.
You can do it!
Cool video bro, thank you this was very inspiring
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
Hey man can show inside the trough do you need to spread the steam ??

We usually have them inside one of the bags in the middle of the run
Good video, thanks.
Thanks for being a normal guy and explaining things instead of a mushroom scientist
Haha thanks man!
How come you dont just use the autoclave to for substrates as well?
You can but autoclaves are expensive when doing large volumes

@@mondowgirl how do the elements look? Do they look burnt or corroded? I would check your circuit breaker to see if you have enough power to run it.
What is the name of the cord that plugs into the literal wall and heating element?
That’s a power cord. Size 10 I believe.

Yup! I use this setup for masters mix
Does it matter that the barrel is rusting out? Does the rust get all over the bags? I always wondered about the barrels rusting out.
It doesn’t matter. The rust doesn’t effect it
Just moved to seal beach, would love to collaborate. Did you hit up the event at culture mushrooms last month?
No I didn’t. I had a leadership conference that day
What type of probes do you use?
For reals what probes is bro using would be great to know! Awesome video!

Depends how cold. It’ll struggle to get to temp if super cold. I run my outdoors before during SoCal winters that get to about 45 degrees.
Thanks justin! Where do you get your media from? soy hulls and hard word pellets?
Can grain spawn be sterilized like this?
No. This is just for the substrate.
Can you sterilize grain in a steam barrel?
No you can’t
how do we message you ? i live in Ca 2hrs north of you . id love to connect
