@@kentshelton3451 I just remembered something. A lot of Star Trek TV episodes were then written by James Blish in book form (perhaps a few years later) who expanded on the backgrounds of all the characters. When he did the story of this episode, he added at the end that Lt. Palamis was pregnant. And I think Bones says something about a god-child...long ago, so my memory is a little hazy. ETA: In my original post, I said that James Blish wrote the TV episodes. He didn't. He did, however, write entertaining anthologies based on the episodes. My bad.
I remember being a kid and feeling so sorry for Apollo. This made me so sad. He was "other" but his failings and needs were very human. Who has not tried to hold on to what one loves and moreover, what would one not do if we had the power to do so?
A lesson in Trek judging other species by human morality? It simply hadn't really occurred that he may be wrong. He didn't ignore his own set of moral codes. He operates to his own set of beliefs. Of all the fates that could befall one in space having an indefinite lifespan on a paradise planet. Never cold or too hot. Plenty to eat and drink. To gather together from abundance and live an agrarian lifestyle. Hardly the most horrible fate. But being a prisoner in a gilded cage... Not acceptable. A Canadian SciFi author Robert J Sawyer wrote Illegal Alien. A UFO lands outside the Royal Ontario Museum. Communications are tried. Eventually semiphore results in communication. Then the companion star a white dwarf arrives. Cold dark the planet starts orbiting the dwarf. About one million years. years. They go underground and hibernate only to return & when the orbit shifted back to the G type star. Only when they awoke some noise was detected. Not random, patterns. They were no longer alone. Much was discussed no doubt. Now this new species of primitive animal shows up practically on thier door steps. Soon they will hibernate, but these animals are devolved quickly. They are a threat. They could attack in the next million years. Well then go and sterilize the planet. They are the supreme species and any threat must be exterminated. Thier God would not allow any immoral act. So if creator does not come to stop them then they have its permission.
“We’ve outgrown you” Kirk said. That can apply today to leadership principles. Gone are the days when a person in a leadership position is a surrogate father. As McCoy put it, “ simple farmers and shepherds “ were in aye of someone as Apollo. Years ago, I worked for a municipality in which the city manager tried to get involved in the personal affairs of the employees. He tried to get employees to read certain books, go to certain churches and also make career changes. It took someone with courage to tell him “we’ve outgrown you, your type is anachronistic.”
We kicked those types right and in return we got HR departments that force us to watch certain PowerPoints, go to certain "churches" and also make career changes. I dare you to outgrown those new types, now.
After centuries without the worship of others to nourish him, Apollo was in a weakened state. Had he been at full power he might've been able to wipe out the entire fleet.
There was a made-for-internet fan sequel starring the original actor entitled Wanderer of Eternity. Spot-on recreation of the original and highly recommended.
I've read a lot about this episode over the years, one interesting story, according to Allan Asherman's The Star Trek Compendium, was an abandoned ending that would have revealed Lt. Palamas was pregnant by Apollo. The idea was used in the Sci-Fi novel "Star Trek: New Frontiers" and the Star Trek comic by John Byrne, New Visions "Of Woman Born". Would be a great character for a new Star Trek series, imagine a security officer (or a Captain) that could grow or toss lighting bolts!
This episode is one of the better depictions of one of my favorite premises in tv shows and movies, that of good bring down evil in such a wonderfully poetic way.
Kirk: Would it have hurt us, I wonder, just to have gathered a few laurel leaves? Me: Yeah, big time. Call me cold, but I've got no sympathy for Apollo. He abducted a bunch of people out of nowhere and basically said "worship me or die." What did he think was going to happen?
He shouldn't have tried to force them to worship him, what Apollo should've done was chat with Kirk and his crew and have an exchange of ideas with them and the Federation. He should've been like "I'm glad to see that my children have grown up to become strong and wise." and aided Humanity with his knowledge and wisdom while treating them as equals. Instead, he tried to dominate them and treated them like the Greeks of old but the problem is, his "children" grew up and didn't want to go back to being cared for like children, they'd evolved beyond his ability to control which he found out the hard way.
Indeed. That explanation is pretty close to the one that has been in place since time began. The One True God sent His son to Earth as a sacrifice, an atonement so to speak for the sins of man. If Christ is Not accepted and Obeyed, we too shall die. That is an eternal punishment for refusal to make Jesus Christ your Savior and follow His Way. Only you won't die in the sense of not knowing anything anymore and just going into oblivion like so many believe. Oh no, this is a death into eternal damnation, with pain and anguish and horror and that person will live forever in that state. While those who have accepted Christ and put Him as their Lord and Savior will spend Eternity with Him in Heaven. Call me whatever you wish, but I must say, I have sympathy for those who refuse such a Gift,,from the God who Sacrificed so much. I look forward to the time when, Christ will come back for His church and we will be, " beamed up" so to speak and off this wretched planet.
Can we appreciate how reinforced and strong Apollo's power source was... Took that long for a constitution class star ship firing all phaser banks to level that structure.
If I were Leslie Parish on that episode, I don't care if it was her 'duty', - I personally would have felt like absolute crap for what I had done to Apollo.

The best season for me. I like the episode where Kirk fighting against a greek God. Better than the whole "Discovery" Show. And Leslie Parrish is a feast for the eyes. Such a beautiful woman should appear more often on Star Trek. She added value to the episode. 🖖
"Would it have hurt us, I wonder, to have gathered a few laurel leaves?" Bending a knee to power insures that power will remain, and you will remain... on bended knee. Time to grow up, and stand, and take our rightful place in the universe. Before we are eaten.
Their were a few episodes from the original star trek that I could watch over and over again. This is one ;and the other is when Kirk's friend is given abilities during an electrical storm and kirk had to kill him.
"Where No Man Has Gone Before..." I believe was the title of that episode. One of my favorites. Gary's ESP abilities were enhanced to superhuman levels making him almost a god. He was Kirk's best friend at the time.
Apollo didn't ask, he demanded and threatened death if he didn't get what he demanded. Forgive me my friends? How about apologizing to the crew of the starship?
This clip is missing Apollo's 3rd (and echoing fade away) "TAKE ME!. .ME. . me . . Me e e. . ." You just hear the first two utterances by the actor. They took out the rest. . .
There is no Roman Greek Empire! Romans took all the Habits, the Mythology and the Culture from the Ancient Greeks! Even Roman Gods are taken from the Greek Mythology! Open a damned Book, get educated
I do love all of Apollo's mello dramatic dialogue though. You protest, you risk much. I've grown weary of discussion and argument. Mortal, you have earned this!
The destruction of Apollo's temple was executed much better than the destruction of Vaal in "The Apple." Shining like the sun and crackling with energy, finally wavering out of existence, including the marble bench. That was awesome special FX there. Also, Apollo grew to giant size before finally teleporting away! I do feel sorry for him, though. Not only was the ancient Greek god rejected by Carolyn Palamas, but the entire Enterprise crew. I'd LOVE TO SEE HIS SISTER ARTEMIS!!! SHE IS ONE HOT GODDESS, IN MY PERSONAL OPINION!!!
She might be "hot" to you but you would not have survived saying this to her face! She was lovely yes, but she guarded her chastity and purity with a furious vengence! Any male(god or mortal) who presumed to assert himself on her or make advances to her paid the ultimate price! Artemis did not play!!!
That was added in in the updated version. Although it is supposed to be there originally they didn't have the tech to show the hand actually holding the ship.
Episodes like this demonstrate why the modern day Star Trek, like Discovery, have completely lost the amazing writing and poignant, thought provoking storylines that defined what made Star Trek great. Star Trek TOS, Next Generation, DS9 and Voyager could tackle modern day social issues and do it in a very clever way. And they could always portray both sides of the argument impartially, thereby leaving the viewer to ponder the themes and subtle aspects of the narrative. Star Trek treated its audience like mature adults. Now, Star Trek is only a brand to push bland storylines and popcorn space battles with none of the nuance of the original shows. It's lazy writing and with more heavy-handed depictions of right and wrong. To me, we have taken a step backwards with modern day Star Trek.
The characters in these episodes are simplified so that audiences can use their imagination to participate in the fantasy...the storyline is meant to draw the audiences closer to characters without necessarily applying logic or reason to sustain the plot...we are meant to"feel" the characters...
Why did Kirk get mad at Scotty for going to help Carolyn get to cover? Apollo could've seen her and hurt her some more and she didn't need any more abuse from him. Kirk seemed to show a lack of concern for her in the later parts of this episode like he was angry at her for unintentionally endangering his plans to stop Apollo from enslaving his crew.
@Bryon Rogers i think with photon torpedoes having antimatter warheads and usually launched at warp, surface or subterranean hardly matters, whatever it hits won't be happy.
"Would it have hurt us just to gather a few laurel leaves?" Kirk contemplates if it would have been so bad to do one small task, to please a race of beings who gave us so much of our history which made us what we ultimately became. As deep an idea if there ever was one.

In 2014 there are plenty of female USN captains and even admirals for five decades...yet how many nuclear aircraft carriers have female COs?
That script also adapted the 1969 "Starship Class" designation the show had to the Heavy Cruiser "Constitution Class" that was invented in the 70s by Trekkies.
Lolani was the first best episode of Star Trek TOS since the end of season 2. The concluding episode was a work of art in retro production.
That was actually really good.
This was one of Star Trek's finest. Nice retelling of the legend and myth, good music at the end when the Enterprise fires through the hand to destroy the temple, and solid acting by Michael Forrest and Leslie Parrish, whose gown manages to stay in place. (For years I couldn't figure out how they did it). The producers also got away with depicting a possible rape scene, and even though I was a kid when I first saw this about fifty years ago, I knew something was wrong. My parents liked the show, and they thought this episode an excellent one. It still compares and exceeds, IMO, anything out there.
@Bobbie Charles Yes, I remember reading that story long ago.
Imagine a woman giving birth to a god-child. Tabitha from Bewitched would have had some serious competition! Lol

@@davidnco1 When 'evil' Kirk smacks her around....he's drunk as anything. The wiki article says it clinically--"sexually assaults her." It was a very good episode, difficult to watch, but one of the best.
My bad.
Love this episode. Michael Forest did an excellent job. He was also very handsome..
I remember being a kid and feeling so sorry for Apollo. This made me so sad. He was "other" but his failings and needs were very human. Who has not tried to hold on to what one loves and moreover, what would one not do if we had the power to do so?
Well......Apollo kinda back in ST Continue.
very deep and very true - Thank you...

"Would it have hurt us, I wonder, to have gathered just a few, laurel leaves"
Sounds like what the National Education Association was trying to do to the public schools. Go Parents!!
The rest of that quote is just as profound:
"We've outgrown you. YOU ASK FOR SOMETHING WE CAN NO LONGER GIVE."
Damn that was some good background music
Reminded me of The Journey To The Center Of The Earth from the fifties.
After centuries without the worship of others to nourish him, Apollo was in a weakened state. Had he been at full power he might've been able to wipe out the entire fleet.
Lasers vs Apollo's lightning bolt three of them
It’s a TV show
There was a made-for-internet fan sequel starring the original actor entitled Wanderer of Eternity.
Spot-on recreation of the original and highly recommended.
Pilgrim of Eternity.
It was a YT crowd funded video within "Star Trek Continues".
"gee, looks like you're screwed, Apollo!!".......:D
STar Trek Continues is highly recommended to see more of this guy.
Great 1st episode of that series
I've read a lot about this episode over the years, one interesting story, according to Allan Asherman's The Star Trek Compendium, was an abandoned ending that would have revealed Lt. Palamas was pregnant by Apollo. The idea was used in the Sci-Fi novel "Star Trek: New Frontiers" and the Star Trek comic by John Byrne, New Visions "Of Woman Born". Would be a great character for a new Star Trek series, imagine a security officer (or a Captain) that could grow or toss lighting bolts!
Being born half human ie half diety would be interesting premise. Would Apollo's love child chosen human path or seek out his Father?
In closing, I say this: Mr.Spock is the king of cool💖
"I wish we hadn't had to do this," -- Dr. McCoy 🤣🤣🤣
Spock- Apollo, release our people!
Apollo- Talk to the Hand
This episode is one of the better depictions of one of my favorite premises in tv shows and movies, that of good bring down evil in such a wonderfully poetic way.
Apollo is not really evil. A tad arrogant and entitled perhaps, but he did help create human civilization. He thinks he is owed some worship for that.
Destroying ancient monuments is sheer vandalism... 😂
“Would it have hurt us, I wonder, just to have gathered a few laurel leaves?”
Way to wonder that after it’s too late, Kirk.
Joe s, it's been a year now since your reply. Did "Jesus" come back yet?
Basically, he was a big bully.
Fuck Apollo! He can eat a giant dick.
"We've outgrown you. We men are no longer afraid to show our nipples."
Yes...free the nipple from its unholy confinement. This applies to everyone. See you at the next convention.
Can we appreciate how reinforced and strong Apollo's power source was...
Took that long for a constitution class star ship firing all phaser banks to level that structure.
And yet, twenty yards away, several human beings barely had their hair tousled.
They should have been incinerated.
If I were Leslie Parish on that episode,
I don't care if it was her 'duty', - I personally would have felt like absolute crap for what I had done to Apollo.
I remember this one, good episode.
I felt sorry after this episode. it felt like I lost something. ..
Thank you very much, Admiral Titan Entertainment, for uploading this interesting video of "Star Trek: The Original Series" so that I can see it again sometime in the nearby future.
Please have a nice weekend today. ™

One of my favorite episodes.
Beatiful acting. A great actor indeed. Actor from theather are in a superior class.
You can listen to the crystalic fusion reactor moaning out its one note song,
and dream about the Goddess you knew the night before.
LOL Kirk says we can't worship you any longer and be your slaves, then at the end says welll.... MAYBE we could have worshiped him just a little bit.
One of the better episodes of the second season
You would have thought Apollo would have mentioned his twin sister Artemis, especially as she was the elder twin.
True to the myths Apollo can never get the girl/guy
He got her
@@Bubbles99718he had many lovers but most of them died or turned to plants so this one got off easy
Bones) I wish we hadn't had to do this.
Kirk @ 3:54) So do I.
Yeah, Kirk sounds really broken up.
@ no, they felt sad. Remorseful, even, but they did what they had to do.

We come in peace..shoot to kill, shoot to kill, shoot to kill.
The only problem was that he didn't want them to leave (loosing freedom).
He needed their worship to sustain the reason his existence as a god.
TREK WHEN IT WAS STILL TREK.
All Apollo asks was Enterprise crew break down their ship; bend knees and worship him the rest of their lives. No big Deal, Right?
This episode is more philosophical than ten books
Was lucky enough to have three evening off a week.
Saw this the day of its original broadcast September 22, 1967
Apollo didn't ask, he demanded and threatened death if he didn't get what he demanded.
Forgive me my friends?
How about apologizing to the crew of the starship?
“Hey, there’s some half-naked guy throwing weak Force lightning at us….”
This made me feel sorry for Apollo.
This clip is missing Apollo's 3rd (and echoing fade away) "TAKE ME!. .ME. . me . . Me e e. . ." You just hear the first two utterances by the actor. They took out the rest. . .
The Last Psychiatrist's book brought me here
Cartoon lighting from the finger. Nice.
Wow !! The Enterprise destroyed the Roman Greek empire !!!
There is no Roman Greek Empire! Romans took all the Habits, the Mythology and the Culture from the Ancient Greeks! Even Roman Gods are taken from the Greek Mythology! Open a damned Book, get educated
You mean Byzantine? 🤣
What ever !!! The aztecs empire assyrian empire
This episode and Picard telling the tale of Gilgamesh to the alien captain always did make me think.
Looks like the lady was doing the "walk of shame" at 0.21, lol.
In the original script, she ended up pregnant by him.
In Peter David's New Frontier series, a member of the bridge crew turns out to be her grandson.
She was confronted by a very angry, and very large Apollo previously, hence the walk of shame afterwards. Frightening, when you fill in the blanks....
Oh snap you're right
Sure looked like they were "implying" or hoping we would infer that she was ravaged by Apollo.
“APPROACH ME!!!” 😤
“We’re busy.” 😏
I always loved Kirk’s complete and utter diss of Apollo there.
I do love all of Apollo's mello dramatic dialogue though.
You protest, you risk much.
I've grown weary of discussion and argument.
Mortal, you have earned this!
Apollo looks like Peter North
Jeff Clarke Atemis had a multitude of beasts like a cat or sow. The statues of her were pretty scary.
She might be "hot" to you but you would not have survived saying this to her face! She was lovely yes, but she guarded her chastity and purity with a furious vengence! Any male(god or mortal) who presumed to assert himself on her or make advances to her paid the ultimate price! Artemis did not play!!!
More power to the shields while a phaser is being emitted? I thought they had to drop the shields in order to fire upon an enemy.
No. You may be thinking of the transporters. They had to drop shields in order to use those, because you can't beam through shields.
Star Trek TOS rocks. 🖖
Amazing! You can hear lightning in space. I had to laugh to see the giant hand in space grabbing the Enterprise.
That was added in in the updated version. Although it is supposed to be there originally they didn't have the tech to show the hand actually holding the ship.
They would babe had the tech, time and money were the causes of problems now and then
Would it have hurt us, I wonder, just to have gathered a few laurel leaves..?
Kirk gets my favourite line 🖖❤️🖖
I wonder what the temple was made of. That was some phaser burst to destroy it.
If Apollo used the plants in the episode, This Side of Paradise, maybe the crew would have succumbed to his wishes.
They would have been the Lotus leaves.
Thought it was one of the saddest episodes made. Sequel would have been interesting as she was pregnant.
They made it look like Apollo "ravaged" her...messed up hair, disoriented, collapsing in Scotty's arms.
She was knocked up by a greek god?
Dammed, she's gets around 😉
Why did Kirk get mad at Scotty for going to help Carolyn get to cover? Apollo could've seen her and hurt her some more and she didn't need any more abuse from him. Kirk seemed to show a lack of concern for her in the later parts of this episode like he was angry at her for unintentionally endangering his plans to stop Apollo from enslaving his crew.
You got phased Apollo. Deal with it.
He's lucky photon torpedoes weren't added to said phasing.
@Bryon Rogers that didn't stop Chekov from firing one to the ground in Star Trek 5 in the Sha-Ka-Ree affair.
@Bryon Rogers i think with photon torpedoes having antimatter warheads and usually launched at warp, surface or subterranean hardly matters, whatever it hits won't be happy.
My god, they held the button down!!
"Would it have hurt us just to gather a few laurel leaves?"
Kirk contemplates if it would have been so bad to do one small task, to please a race of beings who gave us so much of our history which made us what we ultimately became.
As deep an idea if there ever was one.
I don't recall the storyline?
If he was a fake God, who teleported him out of there, The Real Ones?
He WAS Apollo.
As a final scene it was inspired. Subbed.
Apollo has great aim with that finger, to be able to hit a ship in orbit from the ground.
All he has to do is aim where the phaser beam is coming from.
