Excellent, Kevin! After "edging" into videomaking for years, recently becoming more and more of a student, I've gone through several video editing programs, including Premiere Pro; I've now gotten fed up with their "milk the customer" policies and have migrated to DaVinci Resolve, and was delighted to find this program has a superb feature that automatically syncs an audio file with a video file, and combines them in the project. No more fishing for the exact sync point or waiting forever for auto-sync. It's just two mouse clicks, maybe 3 seconds, and done. Ready to drag the video (with new audio) to the time line.
Glad you’re liking Davinci. My take is whatever works, use it. BTW, you can also sync an audio file in PPRO in about 3 seconds or less with a simple right click. 👍

This was pretty awesome, informative, and entertaining. I learned so much in these 18 minutes. It's not often that I subscribe to TH-cam videos, but I felt compelled to subscribe to his stuff. He's a great teacher.
Love this. On point to add: speech and music may look like they are similar volumes, because of the peaks of the waveforms, but the intro/outro music will often unpleasantly overpower the speech that follows. This is because music is essentially what I call "thicker" than speech. I love that you use Adobe Audition. I used this at our radio studio back when it was 'Cool Edit Pro'. I also have background in PA, sound recording as well as sound technician for radio. Disproportionately loud intros are everywhere, and possibly only people like us can stop them!

The Zoom H4n is an extremely valuable investment. Four-channel recording, phantom power, AMAZING built-in mics, usability as a USB audio interface, and 96kHz/24-bit sampling are things that the beginner may not realize they want, but they will eventually want such things. Even if you "go pro" with your video work you'll still be using that Zoom well into the future. It will outlast all of your cameras. For someone who can barely afford a camcorder, $200 might seem expensive, but it's more than worth it.
Absolutely Jody! I still have my H4n and it's seen a ton of use without any glitches. I upgraded to an H6 (which I LOVE) merely for the fact that the H6 is almost instant on - no waiting - and super quick formatting. Both the H6 and H4 can be connected to a power source which is super helpful for me as I keep it mounted in my studio, and don't have to deal with batteries. Even the H1 is super valuable, although way too easy to break.
Another excellent video, thank you very much. I'm on a budget and new to this and so spend hours on the Internet checking things out before buying anything. Bought Senal microphones, very good price and with changeable polar patterns. Pre amp with XLR for microphones and 3.5 plugged into my camcorder and produce very good sound without having to sync. Editing stuff is way over my head, at the moment.
@@BasicFilmmaker Editing is a nightmare !! I tried one of the apparently easiest programs but being a computer Neanderthal got completely and utterly confused, frustrated and lost. The experience was bordering on traumatic. Now looking for a creative editor and will show them your tutorials as examples of what I want.
I just bought a Shure Vp83 and I love it, I'm still young and cannot afford a lot things so I bought a good extension chord and some shoe mounts to build my own DIY boom pole, once I experiment with this mic and its capabilities I'll save up and get an audio recorder, Zoom H4 or H6, great video!
Great video. I too have a love for rode mics. To me they are by far the best value and mine seem to be very well made and most importantly they sound really good. Would love to see more of these extensive tutorials on other subjects in the future such as editing and cinematography.
Still have the HDC but also a Nikon D3200 and gopro hero 3 black. I'm honest with myself. I love the idea of creating great content but I'm still at the beginning of my journey and love learning from youtube videos. I need to find time to create and upload to youtube.
I've finally managed to produce and upload a new video to youtube. I used your tips to position the rode mic just out of shot above my son's head. So to me at least the sound is good. On the video front I needed better lighting than I used and a polarising filter (still need to purchase one) but it was a spur of the moment interview so I wanted to capture his thoughts while the moment was there. Thank you again for these videos they really help.
Awesome sound overview, I'll probably have to watch it at least once more to take it all in. I want my next project to have great sound, after all, I don't want to be "lame"! Again, great work!

Thanks Nezi. I watched a few of your videos, you have a nice voice. I think a shotgun mic or something a few inches out of frame and your videos would up in sound quality 100%. If you're already using a mic, get the mic close to you out of frame. Hope that helps.
You're welcome! Okay, so I'm learning the terms of the mics. Question! Is the shotgun mic, like, the Rhodes mics that goes on the top of the camera? If so, is that the mic that will be, best, to put on the mic stand? No, I don't have a mic, yet. I'm using the camera mic that's on my Canon 5ti. Nezi, yes, a shotgun mic is like those ones you put on top of your camera, which, well, you shouldn't in this case. You could get a cheap mic stand (boom stand, which goes over your head a bit), and a decent mic like a Rode, and make sure you get an extension cable, as these shotgun mics have very little cords. I can detail this out a bit better if you want or if that doesn't make sense. This stuff can be daunting at first, but just persist and you'll be a pro in no time. :)

+Julian Leggett Yep. The biggest complaint I get is that it's too complicated. Usually it's because they don't know how to do it quickly or someone else told them it was too complicated.
The NTG-3 is freaking amazing, but not the best for under $1500 I'd say. By then you could get a Sennheiser MKH 416, have you tried that one? Great video btw, I'm an audio guy originally but there was still some relevant info for me. Oh and all the love in the world to Rode mics, they're the best for the money pretty much across the board. I own multiple and they put a smile on my face every time I use them.
Entertaining, useful and spot-on. Thank you. This is one of your productions I missed, probably because I didn't know about the bell. let alone click it. You have reminded me to take the H1 and H2 with me to record non-sync ambient noise for possible later use in editing. In the olden days, media was expensive, now it's time that's the real cost. I have a wealth of old footage featuring camera noise, audio auto-gain "hunting" and my off-camera adenoidal breathing. I have a bit of re-mixing to do... I may be a little time... Oh, and one more thing, some of the Chinese "crappy" microphones perform well at an unbelievable fraction of the price of even Rode, Sennheiser and Audio-Technica stuff. Select and reject and return if disappointed. No-quibble returns policies are to be used and enjoyed.
I've had success using extension cables running from my camera to my shotgun mics on boom polls. If there is not much action going on it's a pretty practical solution.

couldnt agree more!! I've seen so many kids show their rigs for their short films with the mic on the camera. As you said, Rode makes them with the hotshoe mount and it does have its place. But its not in narrative film making :)

I watched the Aviator about Howard Hughes and a documentary on Orson Welles), But yes, even back THEN they had amazing sound. People cant be lazy. Hi Kevin, I just found your videos and they're brilliant! Really funny, no B.S. and informative without being baffling - thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I'm wanting to get into voiceover and have a Rode NTUSB which, in my opinion, improves the sound of my voice no end, but I am also aware that I may not be able to tell how good/bad something is in comparison to other systems. You don't mention a mic like this here (I don't think!), and I watched another TH-camr just screaming 'DON"T GET A USB MIC!' with no explanation for their advice whatsoever. The video in question was made in 2012, so I wonder if perhaps the built-in technology has improved significantly in that time? I'd love to hear your take on this, many thanks.
Hi Rachel! Yeah, everyone’s got an opinion. There was one guy who slammed the Shure SM7B mic, and he got roasted online as he didn’t know how to set it up and that’s why the mic didn’t work well. LOL! The Rode mic is fantastic. For voice over, just keep it near the mouth for voice over, and not sitting two feet away on your desk next to your computer and it will sound great. You can check out this guy who is a voice over pro, and has extended for my viewers a two hundred dollar discount on his voice over course. You don’t need to buy the course if you don’t want to, but has all sorts of tips and tricks. He is a PRO for 10 years. Sure you can. The singer type mics need to be held very close to the mouth. They can be pointed down, but again, it wouldn't matter as it would be in your face. Do you already have a mic, which is why you're asking? What brand/model is it - I'd be able to tell you better if I knew. If not, is there a reason you want to use that type of mic? Thanks Kimi!

Hey Kimi! Wow! That's a nice unit. My suggestion is to try it first before investing more money into more mics. You might be able to boom it out of frame and have it work, and if so, you're golden. If not, we can look at other options. I'll be at NAB and visiting Shure next week, so I'll ask if they have also have a shotgun mic that would work with this unit. Also, before building the bank lights and going through all that, first setup your lighting for yourself, and test pulling yourself off the green screen using that lighting. Sometimes it works just fine, and if so, it may be a matter of adjusting how you do that instead of all the other lighting, and that gets you started. I looked at your website, and your photos are stunning. To make that happen on video, you should have 3 lights, a key, a fill, and a hairlight. We can talk more on the exact questions, but your first stop is setting everything up, make sure the camera is framed properly and in focus with a good lens, getting the lighting done well on you, and then tweaking everything. Also, do you HAVE TO use a green screen? If not, making some sort of nice background set may be easier. I'm at thebasicfilmmaker@gmail.com. The Zoom H4n is an extremely valuable investment. Four-channel recording, phantom power, AMAZING built-in mics, usability as a USB audio interface, and 96kHz/24-bit sampling are things that the beginner may not realize they want, but they will eventually want such things. Even if you "go pro" with your video work you'll still be using that Zoom well into the future. It will outlast all of your cameras. For someone who can barely afford a camcorder, $200 might seem expensive, but it's more than worth it.
Absolutely Jody! I still have my H4n and it's seen a ton of use without any glitches. I upgraded to an H6 (which I LOVE) merely for the fact that the H6 is almost instant on - no waiting - and super quick formatting. Both the H6 and H4 can be connected to a power source which is super helpful for me as I keep it mounted in my studio, and don't have to deal with batteries. Even the H1 is super valuable, although way too easy to break.

Another excellent video, thank you very much. I'm on a budget and new to this and so spend hours on the Internet checking things out before buying anything. Bought Senal microphones, very good price and with changeable polar patterns. Pre amp with XLR for microphones and 3.5 plugged into my camcorder and produce very good sound without having to sync. Editing stuff is way over my head, at the moment.
Yeah, we have to do it all, and editing is yet a whole 'nother "career" we have to learn. :)
@@BasicFilmmaker Editing is a nightmare !! I tried one of the apparently easiest programs but being a computer Neanderthal got completely and utterly confused, frustrated and lost. The experience was bordering on traumatic. Now looking for a creative editor and will show them your tutorials as examples of what I want.

I just bought a Shure Vp83 and I love it, I'm still young and cannot afford a lot things so I bought a good extension chord and some shoe mounts to build my own DIY boom pole, once I experiment with this mic and its capabilities I'll save up and get an audio recorder, Zoom H4 or H6, great video!

Great video. I too have a love for rode mics. To me they are by far the best value and mine seem to be very well made and most importantly they sound really good. Would love to see more of these extensive tutorials on other subjects in the future such as editing and cinematography.

Still have the HDC but also a Nikon D3200 and gopro hero 3 black. I'm honest with myself. I love the idea of creating great content but I'm still at the beginning of my journey and love learning from youtube videos. I need to find time to create and upload to youtube.

I've finally managed to produce and upload a new video to youtube. I used your tips to position the rode mic just out of shot above my son's head. So to me at least the sound is good. On the video front I needed better lighting than I used and a polarising filter (still need to purchase one) but it was a spur of the moment interview so I wanted to capture his thoughts while the moment was there. Thank you again for these videos they really help.

Thanks Nezi. I watched a few of your videos, you have a nice voice. I think a shotgun mic or something a few inches out of frame and your videos would up in sound quality 100%. If you're already using a mic, get the mic close to you out of frame. Hope that helps.
You're welcome! Okay, so I'm learning the terms of the mics. Question! Is the shotgun mic, like, the Rhodes mics that goes on the top of the camera? If so, is that the mic that will be, best, to put on the mic stand? No, I don't have a mic, yet. I'm using the camera mic that's on my Canon 5ti. Nezi, yes, a shotgun mic is like those ones you put on top of your camera, which, well, you shouldn't in this case. You could get a cheap mic stand (boom stand, which goes over your head a bit), and a decent mic like a Rode, and make sure you get an extension cable, as these shotgun mics have very little cords. I can detail this out a bit better if you want or if that doesn't make sense. This stuff can be daunting at first, but just persist and you'll be a pro in no time. :)

The NTG-3 is freaking amazing, but not the best for under $1500 I'd say. By then you could get a Sennheiser MKH 416, have you tried that one? Great video btw, I'm an audio guy originally but there was still some relevant info for me. Oh and all the love in the world to Rode mics, they're the best for the money pretty much across the board. I own multiple and they put a smile on my face every time I use them.
Although aa couple hundred more bucks, the Sennheiser MKH 416 is no doubt better than the NTG-3.
Entertaining, useful and spot-on. Thank you. This is one of your productions I missed, probably because I didn't know about the bell. let alone click it. You have reminded me to take the H1 and H2 with me to record non-sync ambient noise for possible later use in editing. In the olden days, media was expensive, now it's time that's the real cost. I have a wealth of old footage featuring camera noise, audio auto-gain "hunting" and my off-camera adenoidal breathing. I have a bit of re-mixing to do... I may be a little time... Oh, and one more thing, some of the Chinese "crappy" microphones perform well at an unbelievable fraction of the price of even Rode, Sennheiser and Audio-Technica stuff. Select and reject and return if disappointed. No-quibble returns policies are to be used and enjoyed.

I've had success using extension cables running from my camera to my shotgun mics on boom polls. If there is not much action going on it's a pretty practical solution.

couldnt agree more!! I've seen so many kids show their rigs for their short films with the mic on the camera. As you said, Rode makes them with the hotshoe mount and it does have its place. But its not in narrative film making :)

I agree. I was watching some older movies myself (I've been on a kick lately. I watched the Aviator about Howard Hughes and a documentary on Orson Welles), But yes, even back THEN they had amazing sound. People cant be lazy. Not when they are making short films at least and asking people to devote their time to watch them.

Hi Kevin, I just found your videos and they're brilliant! Really funny, no B.S. and informative without being baffling - thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I'm wanting to get into voiceover and have a Rode NTUSB which, in my opinion, improves the sound of my voice no end, but I am also aware that I may not be able to tell how good/bad something is in comparison to other systems. You don't mention a mic like this here (I don't think!), and I watched another TH-camr just screaming 'DON"T GET A USB MIC!' with no explanation for their advice whatsoever. The video in question was made in 2012, so I wonder if perhaps the built-in technology has improved significantly in that time? I'd love to hear your take on this, many thanks.
Hi Rachel! Yeah, everyone’s got an opinion. There was one guy who slammed the Shure SM7B mic, and he got roasted online as he didn’t know how to set it up and that’s why the mic didn’t work well. LOL! The Rode mic is fantastic. For voice over, just keep it near the mouth for voice over, and not sitting two feet away on your desk next to your computer and it will sound great. You can check out this guy who is a voice over pro, and has extended for my viewers a two hundred dollar discount on his voice over course. You don’t need to buy the course if you don’t want to, but has all sorts of tips and tricks. He is a PRO for 10 years. Sure you can. The singer type mics need to be held very close to the mouth. They can be pointed down, but again, it wouldn't matter as it would be in your face. Do you already have a mic, which is why you're asking? What brand/model is it - I'd be able to tell you better if I knew. If not, is there a reason you want to use that type of mic? Thanks Kimi!

I am a singer and use this for performances. However, I am setting up a home studio for my green screen spokesmodel work. I would not be able to hold the mic and have it in frame. I am willing to invest in a different mic if you think this mic wouldn't work boomed out of frame. I have been taking diligent notes from your videos and I plan on making your bank lights today. Are you willing to make a list of what to buy to make the lights DIY style? Is there any other gear you specifically recommend me buy that's good price for the quality? Hey Kimi! Wow! That's a nice unit. My suggestion is to try it first before investing more money into more mics. You might be able to boom it out of frame and have it work, and if so, you're golden. If not, we can look at other options. I'll be at NAB and visiting Shure next week, so I'll ask if they have also have a shotgun mic that would work with this unit. Also, before building the bank lights and going through all that, first setup your lighting for yourself, and test pulling yourself off the green screen using that lighting. Sometimes it works just fine, and if so, it may be a matter of adjusting how you do that instead of all the other lighting, and that gets you started. I looked at your website, and your photos are stunning. To make that happen on video, you should have 3 lights, a key, a fill, and a hairlight. We can talk more on the exact questions, but your first stop is setting everything up, make sure the camera is framed properly and in focus with a good lens, getting the lighting done well on you, and then tweaking everything. Also, do you HAVE TO use a green screen? If not, making some sort of nice background set may be easier. I'm at thebasicfilmmaker@gmail.com.
