Love Phil’s advice, just makes sense. I do have a question. I’m 59 and started cycling when I was 3 years old and got serious at around 17, rode races and MTB’s and more recently electric, but found them too heavy, especially for on road maintenance. So, I have a Marin Dsxfs on order. My question is: for flat bar gravel bikes, my research says ‘a riser will help eliminate or reduce wrist pain’. Also ‘a shorter bar will use the shoulder and chest muscles correctly and the mid to lower back muscles. If the bar is too wide it can injure rotator cuff and overstrain the trapezius. I’ve found this on my Vado, which has a riser and a 680mm bar. But, no one can categorically say how, as a cyclist one works out the correct width of bar or height of rise based on a persons body size? I don’t have the money to buy an assortment of products, is there a way of working this out Phil? Obviously, because of my age and life experience I have an assortment of historical injuries and scar tissue that I am already aware of with neck and lower back injuries meaning that I will be choosing a short headset to create a more upright position. Love your videos Katie.❤ Oh, probably should say I’m female 5ft 5inches and ride a medium or 52 frame for off the shelf bikes.
So correct the difference between Dura Ace and Ultegra weight wise is what 200 grams. Wheels well similar, biggest weight savings on a bike could be getting rid of the nice paint job( no one wants to do that). Where as if you can do so safely ( ie you are heavier than you should be be) lose a couple of kilograms. Also if you are heavy yourself and are not some feather weight climbing machine, no ultralight bike is going to get up those hills faster.
Thank you. "Don't slam the stem" Unless you are racing, the aero gains are minimal. Truth. I spent a lot of time refitting people who had a poor bike fit from places that had no training in anatomy and physiology. Thank you for this informative video Cheers 🌞🚴♀️🖖
Even then this is a recent phenomenon. I came of age during the Hinault/LeMond era, and have ridden with a 2.5" drop to the tops with TTT Forma and Prima bars on my bespoke rides. I had a similar set-up when I rode Cinelli mod 65 bars. I can get good use of the drops even at the start of my seventh decade of life. The thing is that I started riding this position in my twenties, and I've stayed with it. Also, I think part of the tendency toward bar slammage is that most riders these days are mainly on the hoods rather than the drops, and the depth of drop has significantly decreased in recent times almost to the point where there's little gain over riding the hoods.
Points: Don't Slam your Stem Don't obsess about your weight Don't change kit before event Do get the best mattress you can Do Eat before Hunger Do Cooldown
@@KatieKookaburra I tell the weight weenies that all the time when they talk about spending USD 500 for a set of titanium bolts and other pieces. Phil was correct that you should concentrate on a healthy weight and worry so much about a 50 gram savings on your bike.
morning ☕, the loo, then ride 🤣. Kinda of ties to his point about eating/drinking before and during your rides; before your body hits empty. It took months for me to change how my wife saw food on bike rides, but once she took to giving your body steady fuel she's been more consistent on longer rides.
@@Sorgalimluar it's really important to drink before you are thirsty and eat before you are hungry. It took me a while before I did this. Now I have my cycle computer set to remind me.
If someone goes to 5 different bike-fitters 5 days in a row (and none of them know you've been to others) what would happen? Would fitters 2,3,4 & 5 say "you're spot on,nothing to adjust here"
A true bike fitter doesn't fit you to a bike, they help you fit yourself to the bike, the process requires your input. So if you work with fitter no.1 until you are happy, when you get to fitter no. 2, and they ask what you want to change/achieve, What will you say?

Brilliant as ever, Phil. Common sense, listening to your body, and enjoying the ride, are paramount.

Wow
5:22 Not sure about that. Too much water can be dangerous But he's probably referring to something other than just plain water.
It would be very difficult to consume too muc water t be dangerous esp as cyclists as we are always sweating.

It would all depend on the extent of each of their knowledge and also a huge one… is if they are a bike fitter AND a physio!!

Buy the best bed and the best shoes you can afford, if you're not in one you're in the other.
Pros may or may not take special juice, the anti special juice squad may or may not try to catch them them taking it.
